This week I tried feeding Sahara Merricks, well she loves it. I was feeding her Blue Bufffalo which I still like, but I had to travel for 1hr. to purchase it and it is not that convenient. So I purchased Merricks here at a small dog store and she absoutely loves it. I like that it is natural and has lots of meat, and vegetables, the only problem I see is that it is very expensive for the wet. I do save by mixing the wet with dry. What do you Merrick fans pay for your dry and can Merricks, and what do you think of the brand? Thanks

I've tried a number of different Merricks wet, and the only one that Magnum likes is the Wingaling, mostly because of the "wing." Haven't tried their dry. I give him the Wingaling maybe a couple times of times of month just to change things up a bit, because, as you say, it's fairly expensive. I haven't tried their dry. I mainly feed raw.
Merrick's canned food is about $1 ea at Pet Supplies Plus. The 5 lb bag of dry is $9.99. I only add it as a special treat once in a while. Daisy is still growing and I don't want to switch her diet because she's doing great with the Canidae dry. When she gets older, I'll introduce Merrick's wet as a gourmet treat every now & then.

Merricks dog food here is $2 a can and the dry is about $14, I think I will have to check out Pet Supply Plus. Sahara loves it, she was standing by the counter as I was getting her dinner tonight. What I paid here is pricey but I will get it if I can't find it cheaper. Virginia is about an hours drive from here so I will go there, my doctors are there and my dentist, I am there all the time so it won't be a special trip. Thanks for the info, this forum is so informative. Sahara loves the Grammy's Chicken Pot Pie, yum, yum!!!:D

I recently started Lillie on Merrick food also. When I got her from a local shelter on Jan. 21 I started her on Nutro Max food (which is what I had given my previous dog). After the recall, I went back to my local pet store and was informed that not all of the Nutro Max food was recalled. So, I bought the food that wasn't recalled but decided to wean her off that and start with Merrick food. She loves it! There are about 15 different kinds. Alittle pricey-each can ranges from $ 1.69 - $ 1.79 depending on where I purchase it. I also just started her on the dry food but I can't remember how much it was. She likes the dry food also.

Nik and Storm love, love, love Merrick's canned food. The only one they've turned their noses up at is Working Dog Stew (I can't blame them - it's tripe *blech*). I haven't tried the Merrick's dry food, but canned is a big hit. I pay between $1.75 and $1.85 per can. I wish there was a Pet Supplies Plus around my area - $1 a can - the pup's (and my wallet) would be in heaven! :)

Jodie, Do you know that if you add alittle water 1/2 cup to 1 cup dry and stir the food will make it's own gravy. I tried this on Sahara, but she wants the wet also mixed with it. I am going to wheen her off the wet over time and give her only dry. I have been told that dogs prefer wet food and once you give them wet they won't go back to just dry. I am going to try, but if my Queen wants wet, and holds out, I will probably keep up the dry/wet mix. What can I say, she has trained me well. haha:D

I've been looking for a new food for Tayda and Lenny... I think I'll try Merricks based on this thread! Thanks! I've been rotating them on the Avoderm, Solid Gold, and Natures Variety... along with some raw meat, pureed veggies, raw eggs, cotage cheese, olive oil.... etc etc.

Thanks for the info. I usually give Lillie a can of wet food in the morning and dry in the late afternoon. I will add water to the dry and make a gravy. Thanks.

We have a great place where we get our Merricks both dry and wet. They just LOVE the stuff. Every kind is a big hit. We buy the wet food by the case 24 cans for $20 and the 15lb dry bag is about $18.
JB Wholesale Pet Supplies will deliver the food so it may work out for you. Check out their website.

I just opened a can of Merrick's Smothered Comfort to mix with the furkids Innova dry food for dinner, that stuff looks and smells great.
I am not going to lie, I was tempted to heat it up in the microwave for myself :D I didn't make it to the grocery store today so I had to order a pizza (there is nothing in my house, Old Mother Hubbard has nothing on me my cabinets echo! Hubby is still deployed and I eat out a lot, Farm Fresh has an awesome salad bar! LOL!). Pizza just doesn't look as good as this stuff.

:D LOL!! Yeah - I'm amazed at the ingredients too. I'd like to order the Thanksgiving Day Dinner. Duke goes crazy for it. I should sneak some to him - He hasn't had any since Daisy - I don't want to whack her digestive tract b/c she's still young and we're still not steady with the house training. Last thing I want to clean up is a nasty mess.

Ziggy and Zoe get Merrick's "Wilderness Blend" twice a day. About 1/2 cup of water on the dry food to make gravy, then I heat it in the microwave for 7 seconds. They LOVE it! ~ Lori ~

We pay about $1.70 or so for a can but we can usually get a discount if we buy it by the case for $20.00 & since we only use spoonfulls in their food. It winds up evening out.

How much per day do you guys feed Merrick's wet? My older (15 year old) Basenji has gotten really picky. Right now the only thing he'll eat is cooked venision, beef or turkey.
I've tried several of the holistic canned foods and he's turned his nose up at them. Guess I need to try some Merricks.

At 15.. (and I have two 16 1/2 yr olds, one soon to be 15 and one that will turn 13 on Saturday)... you feed them anything they will eat.. period... and if the cooded venision, beef and/or turkey works.. that is what I would feed... period.... IT is a real challenge with these guys in their late senior years...
One thing, cause I just went through it, how are the teeth on your old one?.. because that will really make a difference... and also have you had blood work done recently..? If so how are the liver and kidney values? Both will cause a decrease in eating... and with my 16+ I give them both a pepcid with each meal... Kidney functions that are decreasing will upset the tummy.. and the pepcid will help with that....one pill per day.... so blood work on seniors is very important IMO

Alex's teeth are in very good shape. I haven't had any blood work done, but am assuming part of his not eating is due to depression. We recently had to put Alex's partner to sleep (she was just shy of 16) and he hasn't been taking it too well. :( He barooo's constantly to be let in the house when he's not sleeping. He's also had two bouts with Vestibular Syndrome with some residual effects on balance which I'm sure contributes to a loss of appetite.

You don't really mean that he stays outside, right?

When we're not home he does, and he actually prefers to sleep in his dog house when it's not cold.

Still would be good to have blood work done.. it is a pretty important part of elderly care, IMO

I tried giving Alex a can of Wingaling yesterday. He took one sniff, looked at me as if to say "what the heck are you trying to pull?" and walked away from it. I even tried mixing up his usuall fresh cooked ground venision in it. He picked out a few pieces of the venison then walked off.
Maybe we'll try another flavor tomorrow.

No place to buy this stuff retail around here, so I've been mail ordering small allotments of all different kinds. He wouldn't even give the EVO as much as a lick.
Our local Humane Society is loving all the food donations they've been getting from me lately. Looks like I'll end up sticking with fresh cooked ground venison/turkey/beef. I guess he's spoiled.

Well, fresh cooked is always better, but on the Evo subject, the duck/rabbit/venison is different then their regular 95% meat canned... mine will not eat the regular canned either...

Looks like Alex has given his stamp of approval to both Merrick's Thanksgiving Day Dinner and Gammy's Pot Pie. Last night he ate an entire can of Thanksgiving Day Dinner. He doesn't seem to care for the beef varieties though. It figures the only canned food he won't turn his nose up at is $1.99 per can. :p

My Sahara loves, loves Merrick food, the best she has ever eaten. I buy the dry and can food. I get the dry for $12 and mix just a small amount of the wet with it. I pay $1.89 a can so shop around, and that way it last much longer, one can last about 3-4 servings, about 2 days. Sahara loves the Pot Pie the best, so I buy that in the dry. She also loves the Vension, Cowboy Cookout, Turducken, and the Lamb. Also if you go with the dry I use about 1/4 cup, add little warm water b/c it makes it's own gravy, add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of wet on top. I warm the can food b/c she eats it better if it is not cold from the refrigerator, about 15 secs. I know my furbaby is spoiled but you can be sure if I am paying this much for food I want to make sure she eats it. I am her SLAVE!!!!!!! HAHA!!!!!

LOL - very spoiled Sahara is indeed. But so are my two little ones. I go to the trouble of mixing Merricks dry (any variety) with Canidae dry. Then I scoop out the mix and wet with a li'l water for the gravy factor. They don't care - Duke eats faster when wet though. Sometimes - I plop a spoon of canned Merricks on top of their food. Boy do they go wild then. ;)

That's interesting to me, since Wingaling is the ONLY Merrick's that Magnum WILL eat (right away, anyway)! :D Maybe it's because he's a raw-fed dog mainly, and Wingaling's got that whole wing in it...

Merricks here is $2.60/can. Not sure what the dry is because I don't much pay attention as I should. However, no matter how large a bag I buy, they give you the 11th bag free. Same with the cans if you buy them by the case. Still getting my pants pulled down, though.
petfooddirect.com has the cans for $1.79 if you buy by the case. Dry is more reasonable as well. Anyone buy it online? Does anyone question the 'freshness' of buying dog food online?

I believe Merrick's is vaccum sealed, I do know that it has a seal and slidder open and close. Also Merrick's is cheaper if you buy it online at www.merricks.com. for those that pay $2.60 a can, that is robbery when I pay $1.89, and it just went up, it was $l.79.

Had to take Alex off Merrick's (both wet and dry). He likes it, but it was giving him HORRIBLE gas! He could literally clear a room for 15 minutes, or wake you from a deep sleep with the smell alone.
Now he's eating Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul with raw egg mixed in. Cook both for 25 sec in the microwave. The gas has dropped off dramatically after taking away the Merricks.
