BASENJIS
JUDGE: Mr Randy E Garren

1/W/OS
10 WHITE WIND ANPU'S LIL SECRET. HP082496/03. 12/16/2003. BREEDER: Kathleen Hull. By Ch Akuaba's in Courduroy-White Wind's Licorice Twist. OWNER: Danielle Jae Johnston-Torrey.

and for Lance

1/R
15 CALYPSO LANCE LIVE STRONG. HP181725/01. 10/27/2005. BREEDER: S Patterson & K Brothers & J Dusky. By Ch Calypso Jon Bon Jovi-Calypso Unona's Scheherazade. OWNER: Danielle Johnston-Torrey & Susan Patterson.

Many were suprised that Kiya won so well and Lance did not...but I'm just happy she did. I have her win picture...but I need to dispute something with the photographer first. He wants 41 dollars for two pictures...in which both myself and the judge blinked!!! I told the photographer I blinked, he said, "no you didn't...you're fine" I think he was just pressed for time. >.<

re: picture if they took the picture - you pay for it - period - even if it's a bad picture of the people. They are focused on the dog. A long time ago they used to send out proofs - stamped proof accross the front - but that was a long time ago. The fine print now is if you asked for a picture - you pay.

I have 2 pictures at the same show - 1 winner dog and 1 winner bitch and both majors - the pics were horrid. I have a finishing picture of my male with a now deceased judge who was grumping to the photographer to "hurry up he had to piss". I look startled, the judge looks pissed, the dog is like 'who me' whats up. Still had to pay for that one too.

My finish picture for Fatia was just a horrid (and with Annie Clark.. )... and add to that Maggii Specialty win for BOB... was the worst I ever saw and she was easy to take a picture of.... and you are totally right, photographers don't care much about the people... they are taking pictures of the dog, period... if you want it you pay for it... if you don't you don't... However the photographers down here mostly put the pics on the web site and then you choose if you want it or not.... One still sends proofs....

Wow, really? I thought you still had the option to send the photos back. It has been awhile since I had reason to get a pic ;) and I usually buy it no matter how bad I look....but if it was a really crappy picture of the dog, I would want the option not to buy.

FIrst off....
congrats on your wins!

Tell those that told you to give up on the blacks to suck rocks.
Black is the far superior color in this sea of red basenjis!!

We have a few outstanding photographers in the PNW...
crappy photo OF YOUR DOG means you DO NOT PAY.... period.

If you and the judge aren't paying attention...
that is really not an issue...
you are getting a pic of the dog's win...
not your do, eyes, make-up or clothes...
unfortunately!!

I hate to see though,
when they send you pics that are totally overexposed....
I got a win picture from a dog owner (with me as the judge) and my lime green suit was yellow in the first pic (she sent back).
The one she sent to me was close to lime green...
I scanned it and just adjusted the color so it looked correct.

It would be interesting to poll the group to see just what folks view as their favorite color.

I've met people that didn't know they come in other colors other than R/W.

Yeah I was like, "Oh, so you think they only come in red?! Well that's not true...they come in red, black, tri and brindle...I have two blacks!" they went bug eyed and said "WOW! I want one now!!"

I prefer the red, followed by brindle, then b/w, then tri.

The tris remind me too much of a doberman-type look, and while I LOVE dobermans, I like each breed to have a distinct look.
I don't know why the b/w don't appeal to me as much.... maybe they make me think of Boston Terriers, LOL. {The coloring, not the shape}. Although I do like the stark contrast between white and black.

I LOVE the r/w because it's a kind of different shade of red than most dogs, and because the wrinkles are more clear. I LOVE Basenji wrinkles.
The brindles are cool because they have a more wild look about them.

IF I am ever blessed with more Basenjis in my lifetime {dh says "NO MORE DOGS!!" ,but we all know he's said that before, LOL}... I would stick with r/w, or possibly brindle.

I have had people tell me that my black and whites must be mixes because basenjis do not come in black and white. When I said they are definately pure bred, the person told me my breeder lied to me. Hrmph! I guess they think AKC lies too.

I hope you didn't tell them about the conspiracy.:D

I tell them Willy is a red, wearing a tux.:D

Do you think they have a different personality?

My choice is what I have, Sahara, R&W, but my second choice is B & W, then Brindle. Sahara is so beautiful to me, partly b/c I love her so much. I do get comments on her all the time that she is beautiful, just tonight. We were walking along the town waterfront park and strangers stopped and asked me about her. They have Fox Terrier, and Miniature Pencher (spelling, sorry). Anyways, they didn't know the breed, but they do now, haha!!!!! They talked to me about 10 mins and said that Sahara was beautiful, of course they left me grinning like a proud mother. haha!!!! She is so good around strangers, strange dogs as well.:D

I like the way all B's look. I love my blk/wht and tri mixes. They're mine for life. In the future, I would adopt one that needs a good life and home. Doesn't matter what shade of color, pure bred or mix.

I think all of them have a different look. I want one of each. The brindle do have that wild look that is really neat and since you see it so infrequently. The reds are everywhere but they are so beautiful well except in Ohio. The contrast of the B/W makes them stand out to me. And the tri's are unique as well. I like them all.

Why aren't the reds beautiful in Ohio? ;)

Oh Sorry, typing to fast. The few reds that are here, including my boy, are beautiful. There just are very few B's around. Thanks for catching that, all the Ohio red owners may be up in arms.

I took a 5+ year break from showing and recently started back up. I was STUNNED to learn that win pic prices had gone from about $22 to $38!!!! I just bought one for Bindi's Best of Breed win. It was done by Rob Gerity photography and they do allow you to return unwanted photos.

Actually, there are LOTS of basenjis in Ohio. There is at least one big time breeder in every major city, and lots of the not so major cities. In my BCOA roster I counted at least six breeders that breed an average of one litter every year. And I can think of a couple other breeders that aren't BCOA members who breed every year too!
