That is pretty hefty.... for a bitch.. my male, OJ, who is a tall big boy at close to 18" is only 28lbs..... all of my girls are under 22lbs, Mickii who is about 16 1/4" tall, Maggii who is about 15 1/2" tall and Kristii at 15" tall (and she at last weigh in was 20lbs...

She could stand to loose two pounds for a pet weight, more if she was a show dog (she's pigeon toed)

Querk is always just under 25# unless he is really FAT (I like that, because then everybody gets the same heartworm med)! All my girls hover around 20# Bella is always a little over...and Luna is always under.

This is Max and Jasper, just took the picture. We just had Max on the scale, he's 35 lbs. Measures 19.5 at shoulder. Jasper is 22 lbs. Cleo is big for a bitch, I'm guessing 26 to 28 lbs.
Max is in the middle of a coat change.....note the hair on the sides of his head. He looks really funny, we've been calling him Bozo.

Wow, Max is huge!
I have seen a lot a fairly small basenji's at dog shows too. One had smaller ears, not the radar dishes they carry now!
No offense (mine has them too)
the brindle pictured looks to have smaller ears?

Do judges frown on larger dogs or do they just judge how they are put together and move?

Max is way off breed standard because of size, we never showed him. You could show him, I don't know how successful you'd be.

This is Max's dad you can check the pedigree. Max's litter is listed several down the line, he is registered Timar's glittering image. Notice his brother is a Canadian champion, he's a big B too, not as big as Max.

BasenjiBoy- I can't believe Max is going to beat out Miles!! Miles is 32.5lbs!! Dang... I thought we had you beat!! Miles has put added 10% of his body weight since we rescued him. I still think he could stand to add another pound or two. You can still see his ribs when he moves- but he's at a good weight now. No fat, that's for sure.
Lexi's still small at 18lbs.

People at the park often say my Garrett is big for a basenji. He is 18in tall and 25lbs. As far as standard stuff goes he's kind of a mess...big ears, black eyeliner, dew claws, round eyes, shaggy neck/side burns & a few scars on his muzzle. Although I always say what he lacks in looks he has in personality he's a easy going boy that gives me little to no trouble.

he's not that big --isnt' the standard for males 17" and 24 lbs? And the eyes are supposed to have dark rims.... so maybe he's not as far off as you think!:)

me too! It really makes the eyes stand out, and gives so much expression.
I tried weighing Keoki on my bathroom scale. He wasn't terribly cooperative -- kept wiggling and stepping off, etc. But the weight that registered was 24 lbs. That could be off though. I'm not sure exactly how to do the shoulder measurements, but I measured him at 17.5".
He's only 9 mos. My guess {and I'm only guessing as he's only my second B ever, and my first male} is he won't get any taller {??}, but will bulk up a bit? So, he may wind up a bit heavier than standard? He's pretty lean now.

I would guess that he will not be much bigger... but that as he matures he will be heavier depending on his conformation. At last measurement, Kobey was just on 17 and 24lbs... While I expect that he will not get much taller (maybe a 1/4" or so) I believe that he will top out at good show weight at close to 26lbs.. IMO....
However to all remember these are "suggested" size/weight, there are no DQ's in our breed (well, other then testicles, they need "2")...

The easiest way to weigh an animal (that can be picked up) is to weight yourself the re weigh yourself holding the dog and subtract the two.

Senji is at least 33-34 pound. But then again, he "cheated"...he's been on prednisone. He was actually heavier, but they cut down his dosage.

Yeah I never thought he was all that big, until alote of people at the park would comment. The basenji's that we see at the dog park are small maybe thats why :-) I notice the B's that I see at the dog shows have tiny ears, they are cute like kitty ears.
Garretts friend Angus is 18-19" tall and was once 35 pounds. The vet said "oh my that's the biggest B I have ever seen". He has lost some weight though since then ha.

maybe length from chest to tail has something to do with some dogs of fairly equal height and weight appearing to be different "sizes".
There are those that are longer and leaner looking, and those that are more square and so look "chunkier".

If you have digital pictures you can open a free account at Photobucket.com and upload them as JPEG's.
If you do not have a digital camera you can get your pictures on a photo CD and upload them from that.

I thought Jack was small for a b, but it sounds like he is about average- 24 pounds, and very muscular and trim- you can see his ribs when he moves. I recently took him to a new vet who asked how much I feed- about 3/4 c. to 1 cup twice a day, and she said wow- that is a lot for a 24 lb. dog. Which I guess it is, but Jack doesn't usually eat the whole bowl. He stops when he doesn't feel like eating anymore. Plus he gets a lot of exercise running from the couch to the bed and back.

Does anybody know what the average weight for a four month old B is? My boy, Otis went to the vet yesterday, just shy one week from 4 months old and he weighed a whooping 18.9lbs. huge right? I just want to make sure he is not too big. He is eating Royal Canine puppy32 (?) right now, but I am contemplating putting all my dogs back on the Barf diet. I used to keep my other dogs on Barf but stopped once I was pregnant, I didn't want to handle raw meat at the time...since then those two dogs have passed on ( of old age), but while the dogs were on that diet they felt and looked like a million bucks. No more allergies, no more weight problem and so on. Those dogs were not B's they were a Westie and a Lab/Chow/Dalmation mutt. Give me some ideas as to what you think...pretty please

I don't know, 18.5 at 3.75 weeks seems a little big to me... :D:D:D But what did your vet say about his weight? It is hard to judge without a pic...maybe post one showing him from the side so that others can give you an idea.
W/out a pic...just as a comparison, when my b pup Liyah was 4 weeks, she weighed 10.9...I could feel her ribs, I could see a bit of tuck-up but she didn't look underweight. The vet thought her weight was good as did her breeder. I will say that she is super active and eats like a horse, so I think she has a high metabolism - plus I have 2 adult bs that run her like she is an adult. :D:D
I can't remember who you said his breeder was or who her parents are, but are Otis's other siblings similar in size and are his parents larger...maybe that is part of it...might it run in his line?

At four months Shaye weight 15.2. She is two weeks past that now and weighs 16.8. She's not fat anyplace, you can see her ribs when she runs - getting more muscular in her haunches and shoulders. It probably depends on the height, length, etc. - dogs grow at different rates...

As far as his littermates, they were all 4 boys and they were larger than the breeders other pups, so his litter ran large, the mother is 22lbs and the father right at 25lbs. The other litters had more pups in it and some were girls as well. My vet thinks he will be about 35lbs (yikes) once fully grown. I hope he is wrong, not because I mind a big dog, but because I want him to follow breed norm...whatever that means..LOL. I guess we have to wait and see. As far as running them at this age, can I? I mean, play and maybe go for longer walks, or should I wait for him to get older? I realize he is still a baby.
Thanks, Basenjimamma

Basenjimamma: Your dog is very handsome, developing some great muscles. He probably will be a big boy, but if he's healthy and trim enough, that's no problem. As to running - yes, take him to dog parks where he can be off leash and let him run his little butt off - that will definitely keep his weight where it belongs, if you think he is getting too heavy. Running is never bad for them and they love it, love the play with the other dogs. Keep in mind, even a Basenji who is big for his breed is NOT a big dog! IMHO, you are going to have an impressive B when he's grown. If his vet is happy, don't give it a worry.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid...I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful..
