When I first got Cali about a month ago she slept in her kennel at night, but was very restless and wined a lot at night. She stays in her kennel while I am at work because she likes to chew on everything. I recently let her start sleeping at the bottom of my bed on her doggy blanket and she loves it. I usually wake up with a tale or paw in my face because she is a wild sleeper. I also have white hairs all over my bedding because she sheds. Cali is all white and has a patch of brown on her bottom and her ears and most of her face are brown with a white stripe between her eyes to her nose. I know she is a basenji mix, but I am not sure what she is mixed with. She looks completely like a Basenji except her tail is long and curls up, but is not bushy like some of the pictures I have seen. I will post a picture as soon as I get my digital camera fixed.

Abbey sleeps in the bend of my knees. Always under the covers never on top. I don't know how she can breathe under there. She's a terrible shedder too.

Jazzy sleeps in her kennel. Our other dog sleeps on a blanket in the small room in which the kennel is kept at night.
We don't allow dogs on the furniture at all. I love them very much. I pamper and fuss about them to a degree, but they are dogs...
I've never really "gotten" the whole dog in the bed thing, but I realize I am probably in the minority here. LOL
Thorn is the only one allowed in the bedroom and he has his own chair with a "duvet" and not often does he try to climb in the bed.
Eos has always been sleeping in my bed, but this summer I felt she was moving too much and I wasn't getting a good night sleep so now she is sleeping with her son and daughter in the living room and I think she'll stay there from now on.

<<We don't allow dogs on the furniture at all. I love them very much. I pamper and fuss about them to a degree, but they are dogs...>>
Being on furniture doesn't make them any less dog or more human...just more comfortable ;)
Our dogs are allowed on all furniture, except tables  Two of ours sleep in bed, under the covers..and the rest sleep in their crates.
When someone's on the couch he'll lay at the other end - that is after he's walked on and licked the person on "his" couch. Otherwise, I have a blanket covered piece of plexiglass that fits on top of his metal crate. He loves napping on top of it. I tried to let him loose at night for sleep, but he bothers everyone, jumping on & off the beds. He willingly (for a kibble) gets in his crate when I sing out, "It's bedtime!" The bedtime crate is a tent-like zippered piece in the hallway upstairs next to our rooms. That's where he sleeps at night. His metal crate in the family room is used when he's home alone.

Hollie has slept in the bed from the first night I brought her home from the shelter. At that time I thought this was good because if she got out of bed during the night I could get up and take her out to potty, however she slept straight through the night and has since then. We still let her in the bed. She likes the bend of our knees also, but moves around some during the night. She really likes being totally under the covers.

I have been thinking about getting Cali a dog bed to sleep in when I can trust her not to get into things. One night I did let her sleep on a blanket beside my bed and she got up in the middle of the night and had toilet paper spread throughout every room. I woke up suddenly to the sound of one of my lamps crashing to the floor.
She is the first dog that I have let sleep in my bed. When she is in my bed she sleeps straight through the night and doesnt get out of bed until I do.
My brother thinks I am crazy for letting her sleep in my bed, but she is so sweet and lovable. I do make sure I wipe her down every night with a warm cloth and brush her every night before she gets in my bed as this seems to help with the shedding.
tlbuddy:)
I don't know how old Cali is . . . for a dog bed in your room. I was thinking he same, would be nice. But Duke, being only 7 mos. . . He still loves taking stuffing out of everything. As long as he's not rebelling with our arrangement, I won't change it. I am hoping he'll be free from all barriers when he gives me the confidence in his maturity. (does it really happen?)
I checked the prices on those dog beds - they're quite pricey. That's why I'm hesitant to buy one.

don't buy one if your dog destroys things. it's a waste of $ (IMO)
Tucker initially runs for his crate (which has his very own set of pillows & blankets). He takes a bath, and settles down there. Once we're asleep (or near it) he hops up in bed, and wedges himself in....

Sahara sleeps in our bed, usually next to me, and sometimes in the bends of daddy's legs. She has to touch us or she won't be satisfied, she sleeps all night, it's outside to potty before bedtime and that's it for the night. She wakes up about 9:00am and lets us know she is ready for you to get up also. We love to have her near us, she does not shed, so we are happy and of course the Queen Sahara is happy.

My husband does not let the dogs sleep in bed with us. Well, he is in the Navy and gone quite a bit so once he leaves those babies re-claim their spot on the bed. I honestly think that I have more space when my husband is home though, Zahra and Chase really take up a lot of the bed for two little dogs!
When their fur daddy is home they sleep in their kennels in our kitchen. Sometimes they sleep together but Chase has chewed through a lot of Zahra's collars so you have to remember to take her collar off!

Abbey sleeps with me behind my knees. When I turn over on the other side she wakes up, climbs over, and gets right back in the same spot. When I got her at 4 months I bought a cute fluffy little doggie bed any other dog would've been happy to have and it took her about two hours to demolish it. She pulled all the stuffings out and climbed inside the thing.

Jazzy sleeps in a kennel in our "dog room" ==which is sort of a mudroom, but it has just a half-wall so it's not completely closed in, and has the sliding glass door to the back yard. Gypsy, our other dog, sleeps in the mudroom next to Jazzy's kennel on a blanket.
During the day Jazz sleeps on a blanket on the floor, in a basket, or in a child's camp chair that she claimed. Our dogs are not allowed on the furniture at all, although, sometimes I will hold Jazz on my lap.

LOL, I never thought would have dog ON bed much less in it... but both the girls sleep with me. Arwen sleeps at the bottom of the bed and Sayblee sleeps midway up. USUALLY she curls against me unless she is hot, or mad. If hot, she sleeps near. If mad, she sleeps at the bottom furthest corner from me.

That is so funny! When I turn over, Sayblee gets mad and moves. She only wants to sleep with me facing her against my thighs/stomach. Nor will she crawl over and sleep on the other side of the bed.

Debra did you by any chance see my post a while back about Abbey getting under the covers after I had put Bengay on my knee? She got so upset with me she kept going in and out of the covers trying to avoid the smell and finally got out of the bed. I told her to either get on top of the covers or go in the living room and when I closed my eyes she smacked me in the face! It does not do to make a basenji mad or to interfere with its sleeping arrangements!

We just got Joey who is 10 1/2 months. He was use to sleeping in a crate in a dog room with 5 other dogs. He did not whine at night in his crate, but I thought it not fair being a pack animal that he had to sleep alone. All the kids (5) also wanted to have him sleep with them. We kept the bedroom door closed to minimize possible damage and to our surprise he slept thru the night, stayed on the bed and didn't budge until the one he was sleeping with got up to open the door. We are blessed!

Ellie (almost 11 year old brindle) and Taj (3 1/2 year old red and white) sleep under the covers, and Marco Polo (14[?] year old red and white rescue) sleeps wherever he wants to in the bedroom. He occasionally gets on the bed for a while but doesn't stay there very long. Ellie and Taj began sleeping under the covers a couple of years ago when my furnace went out during the winter. I lifted the covers and suggested they try it, and that's where they've slept year-round ever since. :)

Max sleeps wherever he wants. Sometimes he sleeps in his bed, sometimes on the couch, and other times with one of us. If the cat is on my bed Max will make sure to be on the bed too. He gets jealous of the cat. We can't help but spoil him. :)

At about 9 each night you can find buddi in bed, patiently waiting for someone to lift the covers so he can curl up for the night. He loves sleeping in the bend of my knees or between Brian's legs with his head laying on his stomach. It gets on Brian's nerves becayuse he can't move or it will get Buddi up and moving around. The things we do for our beloved Basenji's...:p
We are making progress with Duke at home. Duke has a bed in a tent crate upstairs, but we have not put him in his crate for the last couple weeks because he has been laying and falling asleep in my son's bed during our ritual "reading before lights out". So . . . we just let him sleep with my son. No problems . . . Last night for the first time, I was exhausted with the Thanksgiving family/dinner work. By 9 pm I finally crashed - Duke followed me. I was too tired to put him in bed. I was challenged atleast 3 times at the edge of the bed. I had to physically and gently slide him over. His 4 legs were stiff out into my back. There was no room to move unless I hit the floor. How do you all do it? I mean being compromised all night by your B's in bed. Guess I'm not a sound sleeper. I believe I can trust him out of his bed/crate at night in my son's room. He has come a long way since bringing him home at 12 weeks old - he is 10 mos old now. Don't know why, but I thought I'd share this tid-bit of information with you because it is a milestone here. :)

It is funny that you say that about how we handle our B's sleeping in bed with us. Cali is such a wild sleeper and I will admit it can be challenging because she hogs up most of the bed and is constantly changing positions. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and she is laying on her back with her paws straight up in the air:D It makes me laugh to see her sleeping like that. She has the nerve to get agitated if I try and push her over because she is taking up so much of the bed. There are some nights that I make her sleep in her kennel when she gets too fiesty. She likes to play in the bed before she settles down and goes to sleep. She also trys to nudge the pillow from under my head when she wants to play instead of go to sleep. :)

Rosey, too, sleeps in bed with me. She always sleeps under the covers, and will paw at the blankets until she can scoop under or I lift up the edge for her. For years she would sleep between my knees, and (luckily) for the past year or two she's moved off to the side of my king size bed. Once she finds her spot, she never moves. And Rosey never growls at me, but she will growl at the cat and Trevor the Boston if they tread too close to her. She loves to sleep, just like me!

When we first got Alani we let her sleep in our room (with the door shut, of course) but she was very restless and everytime she'd get up to find something to do it would wake us up because we were afraid of what she was doing. She would jump up in our bed and we'd put her back down. Eventually we ended up letting her sleep up there because then at least we weren't worried about what she was doing and she'd sleep the whole night through. Unfortunately, she would have to sleep in the bend of MY legs and I move a lot in my sleep and would wake up everytime, move her over and then fall back asleep (this wasn't working either). Then we decided to get a doggie bed (I was also worried because she LOVES ripping out stuffing). The lady at the store said it would be a good idea to put it on the bed first to get her used to it. When I brought it home I laid her in it when it was time for bed and she's never tried sleeping anywhere else since.

Pharaoh started out sleeping in his crate at night since he could not be trusted to stay in my room w/o getting into something until he was a few years old. Then he'd push me out of my twin sized bed when he did sleep with me. When I moved into my first apartment, the first piece of furniture I bought was a bigger bed...and even then, it wasn't big enough for the two of us!! Instead of a two person bed, it became a 1 basenji and 1/2 a person bed! Of course, after the cat joined us, I was no longer able to fit in the bed and the two of them took a vote to leave me the last remaining one inch of one side of the bed...lol!!

Senji spent the first 6 years of his life sleeping in his crate in the living room, covered with a blankent. One year, I got a Christmas tree that was too big, and I had to put it in the spot where his crate was. So I started letting him sleep on the couch. He likes to be covered by a blanket. Sometimes he still goes to the spot where his crate used to be and lays down under the chair that is there now. He only comes into my bedroom to sleep when I'm sick. It's almost like he knows that I'm vulnerable and he's protecting me. If I'm taking a nap on the couch, he'll curl up behind my knees.

Well since we changed the sheets and clankets on our bed and the old ones are waiting to be washed, they are in a pile in the corner of the room. i tried to wash them today and Jack cried! lol. well im washing them now, hes outside, i hope hes not tramatized!! lol
Callie has to be in her crate when we are gone, so I sleep on the sofa, and she sleeps with me, or on her bed beside me, with her blanky covering her up. She still has to go potty at 3 in the morning, so we can't move to the bed yet! It is upstairs, and hubby has to go to bed earlier than I do, and she wakes him up. Hopefully, when she is a bit older, she can hold it until he gets up at 5.

So far, Bruiser sleeps in his kennel until around 4 AM, He then has to go use the restroom and gets to sleep in the bed with me because I will not go back to sleep with him crying in his kennel. Like many others' basenjis, he enjoys laying on the blanket in between my feet and legs. My theory is that they do this because the leg mountains protect them from the gremlins.

I've been trying to crate train Bindi but she fusses way too much at night and I end up staying up all night x.X this is night three and my first day back to work, she naps on the bed with me while she's potty training because she sits up when she need to go, other wise she's all over the house. We have terrazzo floor so I have no problem with her sleeping on pillows, the bed, and whatnot, it's hard and cold flooring but easy to clean up puddles. Today was her first day willingly sleeping in her crate, I put in a new pillow and she dragged some toys in, I covered it with a blanket so it's warmer (even though it's not really cold here in Florida lol) I think she doesn't like the door closed on it right now, we're working slowly on it

Both of mine *must* sleep between myself and my partner. They prefer being squished between the both of us. The more squished they are, the better (within reason of course). They are not allowed under the covers or on the sofa in our office. The are spoiled and pretty much permitted anywhere else. The squish factor is even more evident when it's naptime on the 'allowed' couch in which they like to be between the sofa back and my back. They fight for the spot sometimes.

Echo is behind my knees under the covers, Blue is a Daddy's boy and sleeps next to him under the covers but with his head out on the pillow. Merlin sleeps at the foot of the bed on his own bed, but at the first alarm ring in the morning hops up and goes straight under the covers for 10 minutes of snuggle time. Echo has been known to actually crawl into the duvet and get trapped. It's fun pulling him out a 3:00 in the morning. He always pops out with his tail wagging like he's wondering "how did that happen?"

Athena sleeps in her crate at night, luckily she likes it in there. She has a nice drape around it so it is dark and a puffy bed. During the day she sleeps on the couch, preferably next to someone, or on her garden window perch.
We let the cats have the run of the house at night after spending the day in the back half. They are 13 an 19 and are DONE with dogs. They did their time when they were younger and pretty much refused any interaction with Athena when we brought her home. They consider themselves 'retired' from dog training.

Ziggy sleeps by my side, on top of the covers (which are hardly needed, in August, in Southern California). He seems to be a very sound sleeper; he'll wake up in exactly the position that I saw him in when we went to bed.

Topper comes to bed first and gets under covers by my feet, Eddie under, by my right thigh, and Nicky by my chest on the right, under covers. Unless someone comes to bed first and gets Topper's place, then all bets are off, they settle in all different places then. Usually everyone sleeps through the night.

For those of you who have more than one Bs....Do any of them share the same bed to sleep (not counting YOUR bed :D )? Any share a crate? Seems like since there are so many pictures of the dogs napping together, that they'd also want to sleep together at night. We are considering getting another B and just wondered if they would want to sleep together.

We have three (just got our third about 6 weeks ago and ,,,yes,,,,,,I know I need to change my name to reflect that :)). They all sleep with us in bed and have done that since we got them -- about two months apart. Our first two took about a month to 6 weeks to feel comfortable enough to sleep together in their same doggy bed but the wait was well worth it. It was soooooooooooo cute! We have MANY pics of them in all sorts of positions curled up together in there doggy bed.

Jazz and Keoki sleep together often during the day, but when she is in her crate at night, she gets N-A-S-T-Y if he tries to get in with her. I guess she figures that's the only place that is HERs and hers alone!
My two sleep in their crates, doors open, but inside an ex-pen ---sounds goofy, but it's the only way Keoki will sleep all night.
Sometimes he will try to climb in w/her,and then it gets LOUD!!! while she cusses him out. I have to intervene and go tell him to "Get back to bed!!", and then he'll give up and go quietly back into his crate.
So apparently it depends on the individual -- Keoki would share at night, Jazzy will not.

Mine will nap together on the couch..some more than others. The two that sleep in our bed don't usually cuddle together, though..only with us. The rest of ours sleep in their own crates at night. I usually trust two dogs not to fight when closed in a crate together. I know there are plenty that are happy doing that....but I don't do it unless I can supervise.
My-O-my things do change. I posted this when Duke was 7 mos old. He's just about 2 years old now. Duke now sleeps wherever he wants, but then, he was secure sleeping in his crate. I trust him now to sleep wherever he wants. Both Duke & Daisy start out with me and my DH, then Duke slips out onto my son's bed.
He doesn't unstuff his bedding anymore and sleeps during the day on his comfy-fluffy bed in his crate. Daisy sleeps wherever she wants at night, but still unstuffs a crate bed. She now has a crate blanket, still in tact. I tried a big comfy fluffy bed, but it's history - new just 2 weeks ago.
Both like to slip under covers in the morning with me. My DH is long gone to work. (the extra warmth makes if harder for me to roll out of bed.) Duke doesn't like Daisy to share his space. Daisy would love to cuddle with him, but she knows by his growl - not to do that. However, I've been home the last couple days doing homework and a final exam for an online class. They leave me alone and took advantage of using my son's bed to sleep together during the day. I bet someday, Duke might enjoy cuddling with her little warm body. For now, he's gotta act like his alpha ways with her. BTW - they're both alpha - makes a very lively household.

When I first got EL D (retired show dog) he had problems with the crate and refused to enter it so he slept in the kitchen in an old dog bed until I could trust him to be loose in the house. The first night I brought him into my bedroom I intended for him to sleep in the dog bed on the floor next to the bed. I never got the chance :) As soon as I entered the room with EL D, he walked around the bed with me and hopped up on top and that's where he stayed. He has his own side of the bed, and sleeps under the covers (he'll paw at me to let him under if I'm in bed first) with his butt against some part of my body. Often he'll start at the top of the bed and eventually rolls down towards the bottom of the bed, always on "his" side. One night he rolled too far and fell off :D

Kane used to sleep on my bed, and often took up so much space I couldn't sleep comfortably. He'd always growl if you tried to move him, it was so cute. When he was a puppy I think he slept in his kennel, but I guess he didn't like that.

I guess I'd better not let Alex see this thread; he sleeps outside in his dog house on the patio. Unless it's cold outside, then he sleeps in his dog bed inside the house.

I could never trust my Bs outside alone for too long...afraid they may have too much time to figure out an escape route :D :D
My two sleep wherever they want but their fav spot is on THEIR couch :) and at night they must got to bed in their crates :( C3PO hates that because he'd rather sleep on our bed but Topaz doesn't mind...she's sleep anywhere as long as she can SLEEP...what a lazy dog!

When I first acquired EL D he couldn't handle the crate so I left him sleeping in the kitchen in a doggie bed. The first time I let him have full run of the house and was going to bring his doggie bed in the bedroom. Yeah right - as soon as he walked in the bedroom he was up on the bed - and has never left :p:

Jamie sleeps in her crate mostly, shes 6 so she has gotten quite used to it. On special occasions my wife and I let bboth dogs in the bed. In that case, she sleeps either between us or in the bend of my legs until she gets hot then she will work her way to be lying against my side, feet straight up in the air, snoring, and making my wife and I laugh until it hurts!!

We once had a basset hound that snored so loudly that we wouldn't let her sleep in our bedroom.

Goober sleeps by my feet. I don't know how he stands the smell. It also gets annoying when my wife and the other dogs pile on the bed and the restless leg syndrome is acting up.
My girls has always been able to sleep with me since I got her. She has 2 dog beds in the bedroom and there is also a couch in there as well. Sometimes she start out on the couch or one of the dog beds but almost always ends up in the bed under the covers by morning. Sometimes at bed time she is a bit frisky even with an evening walk, I will give her a chewy treat which she will work on until she get tired and goes to bed. Now she is 11 yrs, there are not too many times she isn't ready for bed when I am these days, but she will look for something to get into when she isn't ready for bed if I don't give her something to get her busy.

All three pups sleep in bed with us. We bought two double beds and stuck them togeather so we could all fit. It's still crowded.
My next dog IS going to sleep in a crate!
