Basenji of the Week (21-28 Jan 08) Nicki in Louisiana

Sorry a little late on this but I want introduce Nicki. I choose him for this weeks Basenji of the week and by coincidence he is BRATs basenji of the week too :D :D

Nicki, is a well-trained Louisiana guy that is calm and gentle ... and handsome. If you are looking for a basenji to cuddle with, Nicki is your guy. Nicki is very calm and gentle. Nicki just turned 8 years old. He is tri-colored. He lives in the New Orleans area with his original owners. Nicki has had a great life. Due to his owners needing to travel more, they feel it is unfair to Nicki to be left at a kennel for long periods of time.

I hope so too. Sigh, these things always make me a little sad. He's so adorable in the photos, completely unsuspecting that he's about to lose his home/people and have his life go topsy-turvey.
Hopefully he'll find new people soon and the transition will go smoothly for him.

Well put..... after 8 years it will be a shock... and I hope that it is a situation that they "have to" travel, not just that they "want" to travel...

I think we need to set this boy up to succeed in his new home.
I think b's take their clues from us..
Course he will be moving, course it will be a change.
BUT if we act like I do when I am taking my dogs on vacation, or to visit family and use happy, light tones..I think that makes the dog think what is happening is going to be ok.
"the Poor dog, sad tone" makes them worry something is wrong.

Again, just my opinion.
I use the light happy tones with all the rescue dogs I come into contact with.

My Mickii's dam, Sadie was returned to her breeder at age 12 cause "she's old and takes up too much time"... huh?? what sleeping?... and while she knew her breeders well as she traveled with them when they showed her, she was very, very sad... she did find a forever home with a person that caters to elder displaced dogs.. and lived another 2 years....

That is horrible. I hate it when people want to get rid of their animals for such trivial reasons. They really become part of the family, and to just ditch them like they don't matter is so sad. They don't understand and it's not fair. I was talking to Karen from Medfly, and she said that so many people, some breeders even, drive out to a deserted area and leave their dogs when they become too much of a hassle. I just can't believe people are like this. The people who owned the girl I am about to adopt wanted to just open the gate and let her go. I am so glad people are willing to step in and save them.

This boy is really adorable, and he shouldn't have much trouble finding a home. He looks so sweet.

Dont you think it is better for them to find a home ,though, that has time for them,,,,,,,Im not sure I could let my babies go but if they are going to be kenneled for long periods of time I would think a home environment is much better. I just know that sometimes lives change and the right thing to do may not always be the easiest. Just another perspective.

If the fact is they "have" to travel, then yes... if it is a fact that they "want" to travel, then NO... when you get an animal then you get it for life... IMO...
There are many times that "stuff" happens and changes need to be made, but if this was a reason other then that.. then shame on them.... again... IMO

Are you close to retirement age? Do you think you want to travel when you retire? Are you willing to travel with a pet? If not, then get a gerbil {avg life span 2 - 3 yrs} or maybe even a guinea pig {avg life span 4 - 8 yrs} and they don't seem to mind a new family as much.

People need to THINK before getting pets. Pets are not houseplants.

Well, seems like people now dump their kids, adult parents, anything who gets to be too much trouble.
Thank heavens, I do believe its not the norm, but still pets are see as something you can get rid of with no guilt.
Shame that has to happen.
Thank heavens for rescue and folks who will take these pets in.

It is horrible for me to even think about leaving an animal in a deserted area when you are just tired of them. I can't even watch Animal Planet when they do rescues, it breaks my heart to see animals mistreated. Why do people not think before getting a animal. Thanks God for Brat, and all the other rescue facilities!

Ever see "Dog Town"? Awesome place, but so sad how they acquire some of the dogs. They check the local dump and often find dogs there, trying to escape the sun by curling up in piles of tires,which of course suffocates them.
Sometimes they find dead dogs that have been shot by their owners, etc.

It's just very sad.
