Does anyone use a winter coat or sweater for their B? I am curious because Zahra's coat is so thin and I thought I have read somewhere that receommended they should where a sweater or something in the winter.
If so, where did you get your sweater or coat? :D
Thanks!

Abbey has a fleece jacket for cool weather and she loves it. I ordered it from dog.com. I have seen some sweaters and jackets at WalMart but they're always such tacky colors like brown and blue stripes or purple and yellow! You can also find tshirts at WalMart but they say things like I'm a Beach Bum and Diva on them. Abbey is a diva but we don't advertise it!

dayna has a winter coat and she likes it. I bought it last winter from Target, and it has a AKC label on it. it is suede looking and thick. she was pregnant last winter and she needed something extra. the coat is really cute, I think I like it more than she does:)

LOL.. Jazzy doesn't need a coat.
Once the cool weather hits she is only outside for EXACTLY as long as it takes her to potty, and then she is back in her basket by the pellet stove.
Definitely a hearth princess.

My B is very cold natured, I got her last year in March and it was still nippy here in NC at night when I would take her out to potty. She would shiver, she was so cold. At that time I could not find anything b/c the season was almost up, so I made her one from an old pair of thermal underwear. I cut off the sleeve of the top and put holes for her feet and out we went. She was happy and warm then, although being a young puppy it was a struggle to just get the darn thing on,. haha!! This year I got smart and bought her one during the summer at a pet shop and got 75% off of a nice thick sweater. I am on the look out for another one, maybe not so thick for the fall nights. Pet Smart pet stores have some coming in now, check them out. I read that B's are usually cold natured.:D

Has anyone noticed that more shedding than usual this time of year? Sahara does not shed that much but lately she has been doing alot, I have to get hair off of my clothes more these days. Since this is my first year with a B I was wondering if they shed their summer coats for a more dense coat for winter.

Our 6 yr old is also shedding a lot. Almost appears to be a fawn tri-color. Similar thing happened late last winter or earlier this spring. Vet found nothing wrong like dry skin, disease or whatever. We got our young lady when she was 8 weeks old and this year is the first major shedding we have noticed.

My dog has quite a few coats - one with reflectors (for night walks), a bright cordaroy one, a rain coat, a flannel... I buy him coats all the time - he loves to be outside with us, but in our area the weather in fall, winter & spring can be anything from crisp & cool to downright frigid & raw. So, to make our outside playtime & walks enjoyable, I provide many coats to choose from (much to my bf's dismay). but hey, our dog is happy, healthy, warm, and even fashion forward. I get alot of my dog's clothes at Old Navy for a very reasonable price.

I think it would be great if you took pictures of the different coats he wears. It could be a Basenji fashon show. :D
I never knew old navy had doggie sweaters! I love the fleece jackets they carry. So cozy!

I'm not sure if Old navy has sweaters... I only buy the velcro-on coats (less hassle putting them on/taking off).

I've heard muttluks are one of the best brands, however, I haven't tried any booties on my dog.

That's a nice coat. I buy my two from various places on the internet. Talker has a rain coat that he doesn't really like. When I put it on him he hangs his head low. Sometimes he even walks away from me when he sees me pulling it out for him to wear on his walk. Savannah loves her sweaters and coats and never seems to mind them at all. You can find lots of things on the internet.

I just wanted to let you guys know that I went to two Old Navy stores yesterday so that I could find coats for Zahra, some of their dog coats are on sale for $6.99. I got her two, one is a bright green and the other is a blue plaid. I also bought Chase (Puggle) a green one too so that they can match! I can't wait for cold weather now!
Good price! What size did you buy Zahra? I bought Duke a bumble bee holloween costume, size large at Target. It's snug around the chest, but it doesn't give like a sweater will stretch. He looks so funny in it. He doesn't seem to mind it once it's on. Getting it on is a bit of a struggle because he fusses with me. I bet the XL would be too big tho.

I bought Zahra a Large sweater at the military exchange. I don't remember the brand.
Her two coats from Old Navy are both small, the Medium looks HUGE (I bought that for Chase). Funny how the sizes are so different every where, almost like women's clothes!
I looked at the Bumble Bee costume today for Zahra at Target, how funny! You have to post a picture of it. They do look like they run small.

Hi...This is my girl (pre-invisible fence). I hope it works...
She now has matching boots (LOL) for those really cold, especially icy days here in Vermont. I'm trying to find pictures of her all "suited up" so you can all have a laugh. The first time we put them on my husband kind of dragged or slid her up the driveway! I nearly wet my pants watching it!

Here are a few of her debut in boots. The reflectors are shining from the flash. She pranced around on the porch and then when he took her into the driveway, she woudn't move. My poor sweetie. I'll see what happens this winter, maybe I'll get some better pictures...

Love these pictures, your B is so good to wear what we stick on them. I bought my B 2 coats today for winter from Old Navy. I couldn't believe that Old Navy sold dog items, they have other stuff also. Sahara doesn't like to wear them, but they are a new thing for her, and I hope she will get use to them. I figure when winter gets here and we go out she will like them more. Hope to see more pics of your baby soon.

She is very good about since she can only walk a few steps without them on the cold ice. She just stops and picks up each paw and looks up at you as if to say, "Take me back into the house; put me near the fire so I can thaw please!!"
The boots I have for her are muttluks and I found the type of jacket that velcros on the top is best for Basenjis' large rib cages and harness. The one I bought was not a brand that I can tell, but it was at a local pet store that went out of business, sadly. It is fleece on the inside and a nylon material on the outside. A real ski jacket of sorts. Old Navy did have some great things online and in the stores.

hi JoeyQ... I got my dog's coat at a dog-festival from a vendor, but they are available online directly from Ruff Dog... here's the link to the K9 Overcoat:
http://www.ruffwear.com/K-9-Overcoat-trade-II?sc=2&category=12
I like this one in particular because it completely covers the chest area, where dogs tend to lose alot of body heat. (it's also EXTREMELY well made, as long as my dog doesn't get any bigger, it will last a lifetime)

this coat also has a loop (on the back) to attach a blinking light or another reflector for added visability.

Ok so it is not about coats. But my B's get very cold feet when we visit Maine in the winter. Most booties fall off their feet. I am looking for suggestions on booties that stay on the feet.
Thanks,

I went to a local pet boutique and was able to try on several coats for Joey. The Ruffwear coat did not fit him as he was inbetween sizes. I found a great coat from Apache River, quite expensive I think $62, but it fits him like a glove! It even has straps to put around his back legs to hold the coat down around him when he bends over to sniff. They are optional if you like. He tolerates the straps fine, but the store owner says some dogs don't. Hope everyone has a great Bday!

Strange behavior from Topaz & her coat recently
I got her & C3 a puffy vest from Old Navy. They both took to it at first. C3 still doesn't care if it's on or off but he does tend to shiver if he doesn't have it on.
Topaz gets incredibly stiff & then shivers the entire time we're walking outside so I put her coat on thinking it will help her. Recently she drops her head after I put it on & she goes up/down the stairs really slow. During our walks she stops randomly & walks slowly. The second I take it off she's fine but she shivers gain
Will it be cruel to take her out without a coat?? The next few days will be in the low 20s  that's frigid!

I bought Alani the cutest sweater yesterday and put it on her for the first time last night and...wow, I thought she'd never forgive me. She HATES it but it did keep her from pulling when it was on her. She became very defiant though, she'd stop and wouldn't budge at least 4 times durring her walk and she refused to go to the bathroom while wearing it.
Anyone have this problem? Do you just have to put it on her frequently and deal with them hating you for a while?

I've seen some booties with velcro around the "ankle" part of the boot... you slip their foot in then velcro it secure around the top. I've not used them myself, but my friend uses them on her whippet and she seems to like them...

try bribery. When I introduce new things that my guy doesn't care for, like the head harness, I shovel handfulls of really good treats at him. He associates the new item w/ lots of treats and praise, and always gets over it quickly.
Pelican... boots... have you tried muttluks? I got my dog a pair on ebay for about $12, almost new. if you can't find them at a discount somewhere, they are sold directly from the company.

We didn't have a problem with the coat, but every year we go through that with Nala and her muttluks. They do stay on her feet though. She prances around, lifting her feet really high and then realizes (I guess) that she can enjoy being outside without frozen feet and gets over it.

when i first put the boots on my dog, omg... that was THE funniest thing I'd EVER seen. lifting his legs so high.... I nearly died laughing. which of course, made it worse, cause now i was laughing AT him in his boots. But once I got him outside and walking, he started to walk more normal... but oh my... sooo funny!

So when is a coat a MUST for these dogs??
I'm in NJ and it's been around mid 20s to low 30s.
Arti is TOOO Adorable!! I love his coat :) I especially love the leg coverage. I can't find too many coats that cover their legs. Is he wearing boots in the snow?? I can't tell.

I would think it depends on how long you plan on having them exposed to the cold. Some of ours like wearing the coats, some don't.

Below 30 degress for a half an hour I'm sure they'd love a coat.........I think seeing that pink skin and short hair in the cold bothers us more than them.:)

My Sahara hates the cold weather, so I bought her 2 coats and 1 sweater. I'll tell you to get that sweater on her was like dressing a kicking baby, my son is 23 so I hadn't done that in quite some time. She did not like it at all, but once we got outside she was fine. We are having a cold front in NC right now and when I take her out to potty at night and first thing in the morning it is really cold. I put her coat on and she watches me put my coat on and seems to understand, I will say, "Sahara Mommie has to put her coat on to go outside, it is cold and she lets me put hers on with NO problem. I think this breed is the smartest dogs around, she really seems to get it. haha

I love the company FIDO FLEECE. They make fleece dog jackets that are shaped for that greyhound/basenji belly. They fit snug and have a velcro closure down the spine vs over the head or stomach. Caesar hops right out of it after he runs in from the yard.
They used to sell them at Petsmart. The Petsmart in Tampa has changed their vendors and I dont see the jackets in the store anymore. They do have a website.
Caesar is about 22-24 lbs and wears size 14. He doesnt try to pull it off like other sweaters and i think it is because it is snug and soft.

After lots of trial & error...I tried Ruff Wear & the fit didn't work a whole 1/3 of their body was uncovered, Old Navy Sweaters was too much work to get over their heads...I FINALLY discovered Montana Dogwear which makes coats specifically for OUR B's :D YAY!!

They are perfect fits for both my boy & girl. And it really looks warm & is water resistant. You can even cover their heads if it's REALLY cold out. UUGGHH this has been such a struggle.

My dog has a few coat and has boots that she wears in the snow. She has a fleece hoodie and a jean jacket. I now have an IG doggie how hates the cold so I looked on the greyhound sites and found a coat that is made for basenji's and IG's. I forget the site off hand but I will look it up for you and get back to you. It is fleece and has a snooze(neck/head warmer). Great coat and easy to put on.
