I emailed the shelter and they said he is a gentle dog who is laid back and already fixed. They took him into the "cat room" and he showed no big interest in the cats even though the cats were showing lots to him.

Hey guys.. I emailed the shelter and Banjo is still there... looks like he is a purebred B (and rather stunning at that!) - but he is in a regular SPCA, can we/should we notify BRAT? I doubt this is a "no kill" shelter... ?? I really want to help this old gentleman, at 9 years old, he should be snuggling in someone's lap not in a shelter dog run.

I emailed him into Brat, and talked a little more to the SPCA ppl who have him.. :) I hope he is on his way to a forever home. =)

I know... 9 years old!!? It must be so upsetting for the poor guy. Sharron, please let me know if you hear of anything on the BRAT wave... I hope I did it all correctly!

Sadly, some of the shelter will not work with BRAT.
But I am hopeful we can "spring' this guy.

Really?? That seems extraordinary.... I mean with the shelters so packed, I would imagine they would be thrilled of giving a dog a chance with a breed specific organization.
*mini update* it seems like he has been in shelter care for months. came in with a UTI... is doing better currently, but ouch!

Some shelters want to "sell" the purebred dog to help them make $$.
I have found that shelters who try to rehome b's find they bounce back pretty quickly, and are happy to have our help.
But all we can do is offer.
Myself, in my area, I take into on B's and put it with the dogs info.
*if the shelter won't work for us*.
At least they can contact me when they realize they don't have a ****er spanial.

In our area, the shelters are either "purebred for profit" or they will call rescue.. each is different

I can't blame the shelters for trying to bring in $$$...but I wish they would give the adopters info on the dog rescue groups that can help with "issues" any dog will have...
Course, I want any b to go into a basenji smart home/foster...but until we have none in shelters, it wont' be that way...sigh.

Really? Cause I was raised not to far from you Pat (we are neighbors in my former American life) and I did not know that. Seems a little twisted, but I suppose it kinda makes sense the $$ has to come from somewhere..
UUgh. why can't ppl just SPAY/NEUT their PETS.. makes me want to tear my hair out.
Apparently BRAT has tried to get this old guy out - but the shelter was nasty to them.. which is strange because the guy I have been talking to seems stoked that someone is taking interesting in finding this guy a foster home.

Sometimes, when the shelter won't work with BRAT, we can get one of our screened folks down to get the dog...
In my area, if I get a basenji into a shelter and they won't release the dog to BRAT, I send everyone down to the shelter to "adopt" the dog...
That is everyone we have on the BRAT list who looks to be a good b owner, I send info on the dog in the shelter
Once I hear one of these folks have the b, then I can support them, and if needed, take the dog into foster care...keeping it out of the shelter.
We only do what we can.
But oh, these old dears just break my heart...

What a sweet face - this makes me so upset. I hope this boy finds the home he deserves - I wish it could be me. My girl wouldn't have it. I think my boy might, tho...

Well I'm really puzzled Sharron.. because I'm talking [actually right now] to the guy who is taking care of this old boy and he is absolutely charming and very willing to work for the good of "Banjo." So I emailed BRAT back with his name and email, and asked them to ask again - because I would be shocked to find if he didn't want to help BRAT. He actually took this B home with him because he said he couldn't stand to leave the old ones... I'm with you - it makes me teary too.

The stationmaster in the area has been notified as well as the BRAT board about this boy.
Hopefully, by tomorrow, something will be worked out.
Fingers crossed.

Something else that has to be considered...
BRAT does need a place to PUT this boy. Or any rescue for that matter.
We can all "wish" we could help, but if we don't have a family who wants a senior *and most don't!* we need to have a foster home for him.
Sometimes there are no foster homes for these dogs.
Really, we do so need folks who can step up and take in a dog for a bit of time.
*I know, we all have our own dogs, our busy lives and work* so I do understand why there aren't more foster homes...
BUT someone HAS to do it.
If no one does, theb we have no place for these bs who need help to go.

I'll cross my fingers for the best then, and that he beats the odds.
Sharron, I think we should start petitioning BRAT to let me take these babies to Europe!! =) I live in the Swiss countryside, we can roam herds of Basenjis with the cows. I'll just take them all... *sigh
Actually the ppl I have met in Switzerland are very interested in Bs, but there are not a lot of B resources for the Franco-Swiss... I may have found a calling ;)

I would love to have more area's for rescue basenjis to go to.
If you will contact me privately
I will help you contact the BRAT board to get something suggested.
IMO, more homes are better...
but I am just a very small cog in this wheel, and we are all non-paid, so we work for the dogs...
I have been contacted off forum, so have removed my e-mail re forum

For those who want updates =) There was some shelter trouble with this B, as in the shelter snubbed BRAT help.. however from flurries of emails it sounds like negotiations might be back on the table! Lets keep hoping =)
poor old guy. Since having Dash as a pup, I have to say I will never get another puppy. Now that he is almost 4 he is calm and loving and not destructive. It is so sad that people aren't interested at 9 years old. I would be happy to foster him since our foster has been adopted. She is actually coming to stay with us for the week while her new owners go out of town. \

Jen, are you going to go get him and foster him?
That would be such a kindness.
Was BRAT able to get the dog do you know? I can contact the BRAT person and we can work something out.

Banjo has been listed on Petfinder.com for quite a while. The first day he was available, I made the BRAT Board and the District Coordinator aware of this boy. However, when the DC contacted the shelter they were unwilling to work with the rescue to help place him. Perhaps now that they have had him for a while and haven't placed him, they'll reconsider allowing BRAT to help. In some cases, BRAT just has to have a volunteer pay to adopt the dog (and BRAT reimburses them) just to get it out of the shelter and into rescue. It's unfortunate some shelters operate this way, especially since some of them provide really poor accommodations and the dogs end up so much more stressed or traumatized as a result of their stay there than they would if we had been able to get them out sooner.

I know for myself, when someone contacts me re a basenji in shelter, I do everything I can to contact the shelter and network with them.
I do understand they need fees from pb dogs to help with their funding, so I drop off info on b's and BRAT.
But for senior b's, it tough to walk away and have them stay in a shelter.
Seems now, we might have a foster home for this boy,...
The shelter is still seeking funds.
We can only work within the network the shelters set up.
Sigh.

Ok, as I understand it, BRAT folks will be recontacting the shelter tomorrow to see if they will work with us.
Fingers crossed that they will.

I know, poor old guy. I have such a thing for the oldies. I offered to take him and get him into BRAT, even let the guy know I was a screener and all that. Sent him tons of info including BRATs website and this one, and lots on fanconi and the importance of testing. We really got along great.
I really debated just adopting him, but was not able to at the time due to extra cats and kittens in the home. He even took Banjo into the "cat room" there to see how he reacted so I could update the list here.
I am just so glad to know that Banjo is in a home now.

Great! I will have to watch for a thread for a dog named Banjo...how do you think she is on here?
Schouiffy
06-14-2008, 06:55 PM
Actually. you already posted to her... go to page 2 of Test Strips in the Fanconi Info forum.. you'll see this message
"Hi, I am new. I am owned by 3 basenji's, one of which was just adopted. I was told that he has that disease and that I need to have a blood test every 6 months. Do you think this is the one that costs $60? I would like to take as good of care as I can for Banjo and I really do not understand all of the ins and outs. I was told to feed him bananas to keep his potassium up, but alas he doesn't seem interested in them. Any information you could share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!"
and she is from WI - I think it fits. ;)
so sad that he is affected though..

06-14-2008, 07:03 PM
Yep, I see that now :) Oh well, maybe she will see this thread and respond! One day I just might be able to achieve my goal of meeting/discusisng with another basenji owner in person. Tosca is such a unique animal, I would love to hear what others have to say. This forum is wonderful, but not quite the same as speaking with someone in person!

Well, I think my goal might get met after all. I contacted someone in Wisconsin about the other older dog in need of help, and even though he was taken care of, the person I emailed referred me to someone with basenjis that only lives about 20 min away! She emailed me tonight, I just got done responding to her, hopefully we can meet up soon!
