We are still waiting for the Fanconi test results for TC but all the other health tests are in and I am getting quite excited about this special litter. This year we are planning a frozen semen litter from our 10 1/2 year old boy Nicky, DC Sherwood's In The Nick of Time SC, RN, LCM, JOR. The dam TC, FC Sunbird Sudnly Follow The Lady SC, will be coming to stay in California to whelp the litter when she comes in season.

For full details and pictures check out our litter's webpage. I have to update the page again today since TC's hip results just posted on OFA.

Congratulations, I'm sure you're really excited about this litter coming together.
And I'm happy that TC's health tests are turning out well (not that I expected anything less!)
I'm sure they will produce some amazing puppies.

Oh so exciting...what beautifull dogs the sire and dam are.
Keep us updated...are you hoping for any specific colours other then the red or blacks....or will that be the most likley with this pair......I only ask because you are the master of inheritable genetics on this board. ;) with this litter, one thing seems certain...another great generation of lure coursers. :D

lvoss
07-27-2008, 04:15 PM
We believe that both of Nicky's parent were homozygous for Red, so he should be also. TC is heterozygous for black and we don't know if TC carries tri or not, though I don't think she does. Even if she did, since Nicky does not the only colors we can get are Reds and Black.

TC's Fanconi test result is in and she is Probably Clear/Normal. Nicky is also Probably Clear/Normal. TC's owner has also given me a heads up that the girls may come into season early this year. She is hoping that they will hold off since she is planning to go to Nationals and them being in season early could complicate things.

So now I am getting really excited!

lvoss
08-06-2008, 04:12 PM
I also just realized how much work I still have to do to get ready for puppies. So I guess I am really getting excited and a little bit of that "how am I going to get everything done" feeling.

Ah the trials and tribulations of being a good breeder. Good luck with all the planning and the setup for this year......it certainly takes a good amount of your time to bring the next generation into this world. I am getting excited too.....for the winter when you can tell us all about the cute little bundles of trouble. :D

TC is really looking pregnant now. She is due on October 31st. She is enjoying life in Southern California with my mom and her boys. She is fitting right in with my mom's all black and white household.:D

Are you going to bring her to your house to whelp, or will she stay at your mom's?

lvoss
10-13-2008, 01:16 PM
We sent TC to my mom's house to whelp because it is much more relaxing for her to be in a house with two boys than in my house with 3 girls who definitely feel she is not pack. My mom is co-breeding the litter. I have already taken time off work so I can fly down and help with the whelping and have planned on several weekends down there including the holidays.

Yeah, TC is really enjoying it. Today was a chilly day in So Cal so my mom got out the jackets to make sure no one was cold on their walk. I think TC's jacket accentuates her belly.

So, she will get a bit bigger?
Yes, she will get even bigger this week. At this point the puppies are doing lots of growing. Her x-ray appointment is 1 week from today and then we should have a good idea of how many we will be delivering.

I will do my best to post lots of pictures of the newborns. Everyone can also check the blog on October 31st, http://www.basenjinet.net/08litterblog/ for updates.

She looks huge? did you ultrasound? Do you have an idea on how many pups to expect??

lvoss
10-23-2008, 01:42 PM
At 28 days from insemination, the vet saw definately 3 and said maybe 4. Last week, when she was at the vet, he said 4 maybe 5. So we will see what the x-ray shows. We sort of think that when the vet did the first ultrasound he only saw one horn of the uterus.

How is she doing now??

I am not Lisa, but talked to her last night, they were expecting TC to deliver any time between last night and tonight. But I have not heard yet that anything happened yet....

lvoss
10-31-2008, 03:02 PM
We are the "a watched basenji never whelps" stage. She is restless for a while and we start thinking, okay maybe now, then she decides "Nope, I think I just want a snack and a nap". The pups are quite low now and she is getting milk so we know it should be soon but she isn't giving any hints about when.

She woke my mom up an hour ago with digging and digging, then as soon as my mom was up she decided "just checking, nevermind." Now she is opening the cabinets in the kitchen, which she did quite a bit last night too.

nomrbddgs
10-31-2008, 03:10 PM
Looking for a place to hide perhaps?? In anticipation of all those puppies?

lvoss
10-31-2008, 03:19 PM
Maybe but she also just really likes opening cabinets because it gets everyone's attention. After she finished in the pots and pans cabinet she went up to guest room and got in her crate and began to dig for a while, now she is back to opening cabinets. She also is asking for food but then if it isn't the "right" food she doesn't want it and goes back to the guest room to dig some more. If it is the "right" food then she eats it and settles for 30 minutes and then we start again.

tanza
10-31-2008, 03:21 PM
Sounds like she is really close.... Maybe for a change, you will get "day time" puppies....

lvoss
10-31-2008, 03:23 PM
Maybe, that would be nice. She has settled down again for now.

lvoss
10-31-2008, 03:30 PM
I take back the settled down, she is just very slowly migrating from the guest bedroom to the living room and back, now she is check out master bedroom. So I guess she is just taking a leisurely grand tour of the house scoping out where she wants the pups.

It has been a very long day. Hard labor started at about 7:30am. At 8:15am the first puppy was delivered, a black boy. After that she was pretty frantic for about an hour. She couldn't really settle. We would let her have her boy and he would nurse for a while then she would get too frantic and was moving around too much so we would take him away. At 9:25 contractions started again. The continued for an hour with no puppy and she was pushing hard each time they hit so we called the vet. They had us come in for an x-ray. The pups were just not moving toward the birth canal. The vet was worried if she kept pushing so hard for so long she would get too tired to keep delivering so she gave her a shot of oxytocin to help move them along. At 11:30am the second puppy was delivered, another black boy. At 11:55 the third puppy was born, another black boy. At 12:30 the last puppy was born, a red girl. From the x-ray there was still something in there so another shot of oxy. We found that it was a partially reabsorbed fetus. So she got another shot of oxy before she was sent home. She is comfortably napping while the pups nurse and nap. Pictures soon.

On the reds, that is also called "masking"... you know, like the "Lone Ranger" wearing a mask... it does fad usually... but there are some pedigrees that are known for masking and some is quite heavy. Zuri Basenji's are known for masking... and it is mostly the Tri factor influence or the Black gene....

Thanks, he was bred to Pat Bird's Zena, Ch. Moksha's Zena by JR. Hopefully Pat will get what she wants out of it. Unfortunately, the timing isn't right for me to get a puppy (I have 2 youngerish dogs here right now and I do lots of training with the agility and all). But I will go up there to smush puppy toesies. I think it looks like an interesting breeding as the two aren't related but are both Am stock. Both clear parents, so hopeful puppies will have a good start there. Should know later this week if Zena is with pups.

They are gorgeous! My favorite would be Clark due to he has not that many white in his face...

Bella -- she's my pick out.

Oh my. I know I've said it before -- I could never be a breeder.
I'd wind up one of those crazy people that the folks on Animal Precinct have to
visit to remove 300 dogs from the home. :-)

Beautiful puppies. Just looking at the pictures warms the ****les of the heart, no?

They are all so cute! How old when their tails start to curl? or do they already?

They usually start to "tip" over at 5 weeks or so.... they change lots during teething...

Okay I have a stupid question (I was trying to backtrack to your original post and can't seem to add correctly) ... How long is the typical gestation period for basenjis?

The picture is kind of fuzzy because they never stand still but you can see the one pup's tail. They are all about that curled right now.

As for the gestation period, it is 63 days from the day they ovulate.

Here are some pics from this week. The puppies are 5 weeks old. I am not sure how Bella avoided the camera so well this week but she did.

Cute! The tails look even curlier now. I wish I didn't have to wait until January to see some puppies in person...

While hard to tell totally from the pictures.... I like Clark and Bella the best. Hard to tell about Bella's shoulders... but both she and Clark have the best rears from what I can tell both with a very nice shelf....

That was the general consensus yesterday. Both Clark and Bella's fronts would be better if they were a bit further back but overall they are both nice puppies. Bella has the show attitude, very full of herself being the only girl and only red. Clark is more like his dad in attitude.

Based solely on these photos, I would rank Bella and Dean the highest but Clark and Flash are certainly not far behind. This is a fabulous litter. I love them all.
