Congratulations on the good test results and good luck on the litter. They both look great and Marty has produced some amazing dogs (of course I'm kind of partial since Marty is also Piper's sire). I'm sure the puppies will be everything you're hoping for.

No TC's litter was two years ago, Piper is out of Lady, who is TCs sister. So it's almost the same thing, and meeting TCs puppies was one of the reasons I chose to get a puppy from that litter.

Bindi was a bit too early in her cycle for a breeding when I took her to the stud dog (at Kenset Basenjis) so I left her there for a week. Bindi approved of her intended beau and there were three successful breedings. Her due date from the first breeding is January 1. :D
I haven't chosen a theme for this litter yet. I already had a litter that was born on a January 1 and I used "New Years" as a theme for them so that's out. I'm open to suggestions. :p

Congratulations! How about names based on Georgia themes: Sherwood's Gone With the Wind, Sherwood's Sweet Georgia Peach, Sherwood's Scarlett O'Hara, Sherwood's Rhett Butler, etc. I don't know what other names you could come with based on that theme. Maybe: Sherwood's UGA the Un-Bulldog. Sherwood's Sweet Magnolia. Sherwood's Rambling Wreck.
I don't suppose you care to go with the vacuum cleaner idea.....Sherwood's Little Dust Buster, Sherwood's Dirt Devil, etc. :D :D :D :D Guess not.
I can imagine that it is hard to come up with ideas for litter names time after time.
Can't wait to see the pups.

Yay congratulations Bindi!
I was actually tossing around Georgia theme names a few days ago.... Something about pecan pie, peanuts, red clay, cotton, sweet tea (okay so most of those are generally "southern" not specifically "Georgia", but my ideas were already posted above.)
Another idea I've always thought about... Georgia rivers. Oconee, Flint, Savannah, St. Mary's, Altimaha, Ocmulgee (spelling?)

Today is day 61 from the first breeding and Bindi is proving to be a very content pregnant mom. Her gait has become a bit awkward, her belly causing her to move cowhocked. She had clear mucus from her vulva yesterday and she has to pee and poop more frequently. Pregnancy is advancing normally except for two things. I have only felt a few faint movements. Granted she is a busy girl who won't hold still more than 30 seconds but usually movement is obvious at this stage. This could mean that this is a very small litter and the pups have plenty of room deep inside to kick or it is a large litter and there are so many pups stuffed together they can't move. Considering I have at least 10 families eagerly awaiting the birth of the pups I sincerely hope it is the latter. The other unusual thing is that Bindi has had very little appetite the past few days. Most girls become positively ravenous while pregnant so her lack of appetite concerns me a bit. I suspect she may go longer than her Jan 1 due date though. Here are some photos, taken today. I'm sorry they are a bit grainy. My camera appears to be at the end of its lifespan. :(

Though Rally never had any loss of appetite, it is supposed to be one of the signs that whelping is near. TC was a picky eater as she got close to her due date eating only raw and snubbing any other food.

The loss of appetite has been going on maybe 4-5 days. I changed the brand of food at that time and at first thought she just didn't like the new food. So I switched back to the old brand last night and she barely nibbled it. Today I gave her a spoon of yogurt and some cottage cheese, two things she normally loves, and she barely licked it. I'm not really worried but I will continue to keep a close eye on her.

Bindi started having contractions about 11 am and puppy #1 was born at 2:16 pm. It was a hard delivery. The pup was head first but turned sideways and Bindi had a hard time getting it out. The pup is a red girl and she hit the ground running! This little gal is possibly the most vigorous pup I have ever seen. She has done so many laps around the puppy pen that I just started calling her "Lady Nascar". :p
Being a dog breeder can be one of the most rewarding hobbies but at times, it can be one of the saddest. Puppy #2, a tri male, was stillborn at 3:54 pm. He was born breech and Bindi had a rough time getting him out. Puppy #3, a tri female, was stillborn at 5:10 pm. Both puppies had the skin on the top of their heads missing, exposing their skulls. This is a first for me and I'm sure I'm going to have nightmares about it. :(
Bindi is exhausted and she is napping with Lady Nascar. Thusfar, Bindi's milk has not come in. Bindi is still rather large so I don't think she is through giving birth. I sincerely hope any remaining pups are alive and healthy but I really just want Bindi (and the pup) to be ok.

With my Fatia's litter I have one pup with exposed skull.... he was born 4 hrs after the other 4... A worse breeders nightmare.. he was still alive and I had to get him to the Vet to be PTS, asap.....
So sorry for the still borns....
Another reason for xrays before birth... we knew that there was at least 4 but there was a 5th we thought, and so that was right... and so when she only whelped 4 in 2 hrs, we knew there was a problem.... and was able to stay in touch with the Vet... and deal with the last pup....

4th puppy arrived stillborn at 9:56 pm. It's head was open with an exposed skull too. As far as I can tell, Bindi's milk has not let down either. I'll be at the vet's office when they open in the morning. Hopefully Bindi's milk will flow by then but if not, a shot of oxytocin should clean her out and bring in the milk.
I am stunned. I just don't believe this is happening. THREE puppies in one litter? WTH is going on here? :(

I took Bindi, the live pup, and the 3 dead ones to the vet today. Dr. DeHaven said that since 3 pups were affected, she thinks that they were in one uterine horn and that the horn had become infected somehow. The infection killed the pups and the reason the skin was pulled away from the skulls was that they had been dead a while and were starting to decompose. The live pup would have been in the other uterine horn which was not infected. Since Bindi never ran a fever and the pups most likely died prior to Bindi losing her appetite, there was no way anyone could have known. Dr. DeHaven gave Bindi a shot of oxytocin to expell the contents of her uterus. This should clear out the infection. She opted to not give antibiotics due to Bindi nursing the pup but if Bindi develops a fever and does not regain her appetite they may be necessary. I feel better knowing that this wasn't some kind of birth defect or something I may have done wrong but I am still depressed at the loss of the 3 pups.

The puppy will be going to live with my best friend Steph and her husband Chris. They have Luna (Ch. Sherwood's Red Moon Rising), littermate to my Baron (and the deceased Logan) and full sibling to my Pippin and Lisa's Nicky. They were here to watch her birth and will be coming over frequently to watch her grow. They have decided to name her Ayla.
Bindi has been a fabulous mother, very attentive and always touching the baby. They snuggle constantly and it is so precious. Bindi does not look like a typical nursing mother. She barely has noticable teats but the pup is a little butterball so she is obviously producing enough milk. Bindi looks so good that for a fleeting moment, I was tempted to enter her in the dog show at the end of this month. :p

Singleton pups tend to be developmentally slower than litters but Ayla turned 3 weeks and still wasn't doing much of anything but sleeping and eating. I was starting to get a bit worried about her lack of interest in her surroundings. Yesterday afternoon she finally started to explore the inside of the puppy pen and a stuffed toy with a bit of interest. These pics were taken a few minutes ago of her adventures.

Moxie is such a sweet babysitter! From the expression on his face, Tuk is NOT going to be asked to babysit. I didn't know that TUK stood for "The Unnamed Kitty". Dumb me thought it was a variation of "Tuck"....as in Friar Tuck with Robin in the Sherwood Forest!!!
Pat
LOL! I never even thought about that! No, when I found that kitten, I did NOT want another cat. I had it set up where a local cat rescue group would take him once he was weaned. Once he was weaned they told me they wouldn't take him after all. I called every local cat rescue and none would take him. I didn't want to take him to the animal shelter. I tried and tried to give him away. Months passed and I refused to give him a name. I knew once I named him he was staying so I just called him The Unnamed Kitty. I finally admitted defeat and his name became TUK.

I have cat named Kiki for the same reason. I found a momma cat & litter of kittens. I kept the momma cat, got her shots & spayed her & put her outside with my other two cats. She decided to live on her own again (I think she was tired of the kittens!), and I found homes for all the kittens but one. She was super shy & didn't trust anybody. I made her an outdoor cat since humans seemed to stress her out. She stuck around since I filled her bowl everyday, and we just always said "Here kitty kitty." After a year of feeding her every single day, she finally trusted me enough to let me pet her. Now she's indoors... I'm the only person allowed anywhere near her, but she adores me so much I finally had to give her a name. Kiki, the shortened form of kitty kitty, stuck.

She was not interested in playing show dog and she didn't want to bring her ears up.

Ayla has proven to be difficult to wean off the nipple. Although she has pretty much stopped producing milk, Bindi still lets her nurse for brief periods. Ayla isn't overly picky about whose nipple she is attached too and she tries to nurse off Pippin and Jozie also.
Ayla with Jozie

Steph and Chris brought their 13 year old Basenji Luna over a few days ago to meet Ayla. Luna wasn't very interested in her and basically ignored her. That is a considerably better reaction than when the adult dog acts aggressive. I think things will work out just fine. :)
Since Ayla has no siblings, we took her to another breeder's house to play with her puppies. They were 10 weeks old so they were bigger and more robust than Ayla so we only let 2 at a time play with her. Ayla was a bit appalled at those ruffians lol! I think Ayla prefers playing with my slow cats that just lay there when she plays with them.
This puppy has been a real joy to raise. She is extraordinarily clean and she has not pooped in the puppy pen, not once, in 3 weeks. She does not soil her crate at all. She is about 99% housetrained to do her poops outside and about 80% housetrained for her piddles. (The "oopsies" are usually my fault for not getting to her in time.) Bite inhibition training is almost complete and she is rock solid on startle reflex training. I'm really proud of how smart and easily trained this girl is. She has truly been a joy. :D

I let Ayla go home with Steph and Chris Friday. She sleeps in her crate next to the bed and stays quiet and clean. Housetraining is coming along well though she has discovered that Chris and Steph have a lot more "stuff" within reach to chew on than I do. The house is being marinated with Bitter Apple spray, much to the puppy's annoyance haha.
Video of her first night at her new home. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_LOpkl4lN4)
Luna snarks at her a little bit (manners little one, manners!) but is starting to express curiousity towards her.
Today's email from Steph:
"Yesterday the puppy was trying as usual to get Luna to play. The response she normally gets is a grumpy "get out of my space". But when I came home last night, Ayla was excited to see me and was full of puppy exuberance. She ran over to Luna to entice her into playing with her and what do you know.. my big lumpy old girl started bouncing around like she was a puppy! She went down on her front paws with her rump in the air and WAGGED HER TAIL(!) at Ayla and then she bumped her with her nose and actually picked up one of the toys and tossed it at Ayla. It didn't last long and my stupid battery on the camera was charging so I missed getting it on film - but I was so happy that I teared up. So did Chris."
Stories like this makes being a breeder worth all the headaches. :)

I have kept Bindi apart from my other two girls, Jozie and Pippin, for much of the past few months. Hormones were high when they were in season last fall, then they were back together, then had to be apart at the end of Bindi's pregnancy, and then completely apart the whole time Bindi was raising Ayla. When Ayla was old enough to be without Bindi through the entire night, I started crating Bindi in the room with the other dogs. There was a lot of "foul language" through the crates but I could tell that Bindi missed being with Jozie and vice versa. A couple days after Ayla went to her new home, the temperature dropped way down and it snowed. It was just too bad to switch dogs around with some inside and some outside so I said to myself, "it's now or never". I turned all the girls loose in the living room and after some grumbling and posturing, and some heavy duty supervising by myself, they tolerated each other. After a day or so of tension, the girls decided it was more fun to play than posture. :)
Here are Bindi and Jozie cuddled up on the heat vent.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/rainbowspics/Photos/bindi_jozie_march09.jpg
Now that they are getting along, they have become "tag-team wrestlers" against the poor cats. I think the cats were happier having a bouncy puppy wrestling with them than being "body slammed" by two adult dogs. *sighs*

Good catch! What's funny is that Steph and Chris each came up with the name seperately from each other. Steph's Ayla from Clan Of The Cave Bear and Chris' Aayla from the Star Wars jedi master Aayla Secura. Steph and I would like to find a registered name to reflect the Clan Of The Cave Bear connection whereas Chris would like her registered name to be Star Wars related. We are currently at an impass. :p

I'm just catching up on this thread.... I've read the link to bite inhibition training lvoss gave in another post. But, how do you know know bite inhibition training is "complete"? Their bite is "gummy" consistently for a period of time? I would have guessed that you would have to keep that up for a while until they are a little older since puppies get so easily excited.

One thing I will never understand is why so many people automatically stick their finger or hand in a puppy's mouth. Then as the puppy grows, they complain because it always wants to gnaw on them or nip.
From the time my pups start to mouth me, I yelp like it hurts. They soon learn that humans are delicate creatures and they shouldn't use their teeth on them. Visitors are scolded for sticking their fingers in the puppy's mouth and instructed to yelp as I do. It is far harder to train people than it is puppies! New owners are instructed to yelp when the pup mouths them and give the puppy a toy to show it what it should be chewing on. The one's who follow my advice have very few problems with nipping pups.
Ayla presented a new problem. She had no siblings to learn bite pressure from. The adults (nor the cats!) never yelped. Teaching her that a yelp means ouch has taken longer than usual. Consistent reinforcement will halt the behavior though. It just takes time and patience.
Quercus
03-06-2009, 01:11 PM
Yeah, I would say bite inhibition training is "complete' at the puppy stage when they stop chewing on you in play. But you won't really know how complete it is as an adult until the dog might be forced into a situation where it really wants to bite either out of fear, or anger. Ideally, the dog would go thru a progression of 'bite' stages starting with an air snap, and then a muzzle punch (where it feels like the dog bit you, but there isn't any teeth marks or blood), and then a there is a bite where the dog opens its mouth and applies pressure, but doesn't break the skin. The idea is that the dog only applies as much pressure as needed in an emergency (in the dog's mind). A dog with no bite inhibition will overreact and inflict multiple skin breaking bites for someone bumping him while sleeping.
That is a worst case scenario, obviously. Lots of dogs wouldn't dream of biting a person; but the idea is to teach a dog how hard is too hard, rather than teaching them to never put their mouth on someone. And, as Robyn mentioned, singleton puppies, or puppies that were removed from their dam and littermates too early often have more trouble learning this.
renaultf1
03-06-2009, 02:36 PM
Robin & Andrea...great posts and very timely!! I have a mouthy little girl but since I've been doing the yelping and turning away or yelping and giving a toy, things are DEFINITELY improving. As you've said, consistency is key though...I've been doing it every time and have been trying to get other people to do the same (that's been the tough part).
