No easy way to say this ... EL D left this morning and crossed the rainbow bridge. I was there before he left and told him how glad I was that he had chosen me to be his pal.
He had been in an oxygen cage the last couple days and the doctors kept having to up the oxygen content. It was going to get worse they said and his chances were really pretty slim.
God told me he could cure him and I needed to let him go so ...

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, prayers, and support (and Phoenix for the poem). My vet and the folks at the university hospital were just great and very helpful. It is tough.

Soon you will remember only the good and fun times with El D.... when I let Maggii go (granted it, it was due to old age, but she was my heart dog) it was very hard to think of her without crying and missing her. But as the months passed, we remember only the fun times and the love that she gave us...

Anita, I am so very sorry. Your loss is heartbreaking! I was hoping against hope that El D would pull through, but he had a dreadful diagnosis. Hold your many wonderful memories of El D tight in your heart, they will help you through these next difficult weeks. As Pat said, in months to come, you will be abel to think of him and smile without tears. We all cry with you, till then.

When my 1st basenji, Casey, went to Rainbow Bridge last year due to liver cancer, the one phrase that got me through was, "...It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all..." Wizard, EL D knew how much you loved him in the kind things you did for him, and taking such good care of him when he was ill. I am so sorry to hear of your loss but it was a good and brave decision to let him go, again you did a kind thing for EL D.
