Hi everyone I'm new to the forums and have a pretty important question before I make my final decision on bringing my new/first Basenji pup home.

In your opinion/experience do you find that the dogs bond stronger with their owner if they are of opposite sex? Or does it matter at all??

Thank you all for you help,
Jay

It really doesn't matter what gender the dog or owner is. A dog will bond with a good owner -- a calm, rational leader -- no matter what.

I don't think it matters. I think how well a dog bonds with you really is most dependent on how much effort you put into relationship building.

We have both male and female. Our female bonded more with Vanessa I think, and the male bonded more with me.

a while back there was a big discussion on the sighthound agility list about this. it did seem to be that female handlers perferred male dogs and male handlers perferred female dogs. but, having both male and female dogs in this household right now, i'll tell you what ***really*** matters is the time you put into the relationship.

All of the dogs we've ever owned have bonded strongly with me, and less so with my husband. We've had males and females. The reason is.... I put in the effort, he does not. For me they are more members of the family, for him they are pets. He loves the dogs, I LOVE the dogs. They know the difference!

Ditto!! My bond came right after neutering and spaying. I stayed home and cuddled/babied the 'kids'. The DH had to go to work. Ever since then, they come to me for bonding and comfort. They use J.R.(DH) when I'm away or asleep, or I'm out of food:)

I think they love him just as much, just differently.

That sounds really crappy. I know he loves them, just differently than I do. Is it a guy thing???

Hopefully you have checked out health testing, especially for Fanconi? You can learn about health problems in Basenjis at www.basenjihealth.org or www.basenji.org (both site are from the Basenji Club of America).... it is really important that health testing is done and that the results are published on the open data base website www.offa.org

They are clear of Fanconi the website is www.farasibasenjis.com

The sire has been CHIC tested though he doesn't have the "highest ratings" as stated on the website, Excellent is the highest possible hip rating in OFA and he is OFA Good which is free of dysplasia. He also tested Probably Clear for Fanconi so the pups can not be Affected

http://www.offa.org/display.html?appnum=1280799#animal

The dam has no OFA record of any health testing. Her dam is Probably Carrier and her sire is untested. It does say that on one of the pages that she has been tested so maybe the results have just not posted to the OFA site yet.

Don't think it's a guy thing, necessarily. Nemo usually hops in my lap to go to sleep first unless I'm busy doing something. Although I must say that I interact with my dogs very differently that my father and brother do with theirs. :D

I emailed Joel last night when I checked out his website. He is contacting OFA to see why her results have been posted yet. I had a problem with one of mine getting posted to the website but after contacting OFA directly it was worked out.

My boy is my boy. Although I've never had any female dogs, so I can't give an objective opinion, I truly think that the dog will be closest to the one who does the most for it. Magnum goes to DH and DS for petting, but he has no problem with DH or DS "leaving the building," so to speak; he rarely even notices.

Magnum does not like it, however, when I "leave the building" without him. He knows where I am at all times and displays some mildly anxious behavior when he knows I'm getting ready to quit the premises, accepting a "You don't get to go" remark with apparent resignation. He recognizes my vehicle and is waiting at the door when I enter. When we're at our seasonal campsite, I've been told that he waits patiently for me to return, but he refuses to play or accept treats(!) or be distracted in any way while I'm gone. As soon as he sees my car in the distance, he watches the car until it stops at our site and then waits patiently (for at least a few minutes) for my greeting--I might get a baroo if I ignore him to too long...very tempting! Not so for DH or DS.

I feed/water him, I take care of his needs, I dote on him; I am his closely-guarded resource for everything. I really believe it would be the same way regardless of gender--whoever provides the caretaking becomes the dog's top person.

We have both a male and female, it really doesn't matter. All though our male has bonded more with me, I was the one who held him all the way home from the breeder and cuddled with him the first nights with us. But then there are days he wants to be more with my husband. Our female doesn't really care as long as she is getting affection.
As another member said a good owner is the key and it is what you put into the relationship. Good luck and happy bonding!!!

How cool that you are getting one of Jocelyn's pups, I watched the last ones being born on the live web-cam. I know they will be wonderful pups.
