Just a note to let everyone know about next year's litter planned. Can/UKC Ch Dalji's Damisi Dhati A Duara (She's a Bluestones Girl) is (hopefully, if she Cooperates) being bred to Mex/Int/Am Ch Bluestones Wild Buckwheat. Pics attached. This breeding is to keep the line which is dying out and produced many Ch. Hopefully it will take as Whylie is 11 this year. All testing will be done over the next few months.

Make sure you get a semen count done. For my first litter my top choices were older dogs, unfortunately both were sterile. There are older dogs out there that are definitely fertile but it is good to know before the breeding.

I've already requested it, but Scott is a little odd to say the least. Because it's the end of the line, I've already offered to pay, but if he doesn't do it, I will still breed and see what happens. It's not the dog I'm after so much as the lineage. I also have to travel to Florida, so I would like to know as well.

What about doing the other health testing? At this point in time he only has hips in the OFA database so he still needs the Fanconi Marker testing, is he up to date on his CERF?

You are going to invest a lot in the breeding and though you want to save the line if the health testing isn't being done and the owner isn't being cooperative then it may not be worth it especially if you go through all this expense and get no puppies because the dog isn't fertile.

Be sure to also check with your Kennel Club, AKC requires a semen count for litters to be registered if sired by an "Over Age" sire.

I believe for AKC it is 12yrs and over requirement for seman count. Or at least it was in 1996 when we used Ricky

For AKC it is 12 years but I don't know if CKC has a requirement and if so what the age is.

nomrbddgs
03-26-2009, 07:05 PM
I don't think CKC has a requirement, I will be looking into it (good point Lisa, I never even thought about that-I've been spending the last few months tracking him down). Scott wants to do the Fanconi Linkage test, and if he doesn't do it within a few months, I will order it and get it sent to him for him to do it. He says he wants to do all the testing and the last time (a few years ago he says) he did his eyes, they were okay. Scott's been out of the loop for about five years and wasn't even sure what the linkage test was. I had to explain it to him. Hopefully, he is easy to work with.

We used a 10yo dog last fall and he sired a litter of 3 and a litter of 7.
He was used in January and has a litter of 6-7 due this week.
Next time girls are in I will collect him again.
There is no better time than the present!

I never found Scott odd....
just very quiet and sweet and very easy to talk with about his dogs.

I'd certainly get testing done, especially a semen count.
You'd hate to come breeding time have spent the $$$ to fly down there, breed, then get nothing out of it.
You can always make a ''back-up'' plan then go to breed and take him for an analysis yourself BEFORE breeding.
If there isn't anything there, go back home and use the other dog.

Best of luck to you.

Never thought of that Kathy Thanks! Scott phoned me back at 7 and then phoned me back at 1130 pm-as excited as a schoolboy. He's endearing, but sometimes his brain is not where it should be. I do like Scott, but he's still odd-come to think of it, so am I-so we should get along great!

Whylie has not lived with Peg for many years now. He was returned to Scott as per the contract.

And yes, I love b/w. They are so elegant. Not that the other colours don't have their 'things' either. I'm just partial to b/w

One breeding has taken place. I will try again tomorrow. We flew Wylie up and he will fly back down on Sat. Also did a semen smear. There are lots of little swimmers and hardly any rejects that we could find. So it should be successful if Damisi has eggs. All she's done is scream at poor little Wylie! Scott did try a semen test, but no luck as there were no bitches around in season at that time. With any luck, he will try to draw a few straws from the old guy. He's a beautiful boy with a great temperment.

First time reading this thread, I must have missed it at the onset. Congratulations on the successful (hopefully) breeding. He looks pretty pleased with himself in the pics:) and a lot less 'fluffy'.

I hope you don't mind a couple of questions. Why does the AKC require a semen count for older dogs and specifically those over 12. Is there something research wise that indicates that our breed or other hound breeds have less active seminal fluid after 11 years of age?

Just one other, I saw at Sally's site that there was only one sib that produced a 2 pup litter, and in the next generation there was only perhaps 3. I may have missed a few :o but is this what is typically considered a vanishing 'tail line' or am I way off base here??

Again, congratulations and best wishes on a successful breeding. Love the pups!! Maybe someday I'll have another:)

lvoss
10-13-2009, 11:46 PM
I am not sure what you mean by "vanishing tail line" with regards to Wiley. He is a Wau tail line which is one of two most prevalent male tails in the breed.

You're right Lisa, sometimes I am just so DUH:o

I have a question for the long time breeders as I haven't come across this problem before with any breed. Damisi has been bred and is now just MISERABLE. She has taken to growling at everything if I'm not here and nipped two people yesterday when she was excited.(Someone came in that she has seen many, many times and she nipped them when the person was petting them all, and when my daughter tried to move her back from the baby gate, she nipped her on the leg.) She will have to be crated when I'm not here, but this has been getting worse instead of better. Any suggestions? Anyone? I hope this goes away, but I'm more concerned about when she has the puppies.

She has also gotten aggressive with Shadow. She used to be the dog that I would have said would never do anything to anyone, but definitely not now.

tanza
10-20-2009, 03:53 PM
I have to say, Arlene, I have never had that reaction from any of my bitches... typically they become "softer" and more loving.... that is really a strange reaction....

nomrbddgs
10-20-2009, 03:59 PM
Well, she is more loving with me. She's just become very hostile towards the other dogs and other people. BUT, I'm going to take the baby gate down and put up the door. That may alleviate some of the issues. That way she can't see down the stairs or out the back door. Hopefully that will bring down the excitability somewhat. I'm also going to take her temp in a few min. While I don't suspect a fever, you never know.

nomrbddgs
10-20-2009, 04:57 PM
Her temp is 98.3. I'll take it over the next few days as well to see if it changes any. I put the door up, so we'll see if that makes a difference as well.

sinbaje
10-21-2009, 12:00 AM
98.3 degrees is sub normal temp for a dog. They should be between 101-102.5 degrees. I would temp her again but wait until after she has defecated (assuming you are temping rectally). Her behavior, if related to breeding/pregnancy and not ill health will probably only get worse when pups come. :(

Any idea if her dam showed similar behavior when she whelped/reared pups?

10-21-2009, 01:05 AM
<<Any idea if her dam showed similar behavior when she whelped/reared pups?>>

Nope. I was there almost every other day. She was a good mother. I will temp her again tomorrow. I am also puzzled by the low temp.

YodelDogs
10-21-2009, 01:43 AM
Please let us know what her follow-up temp is. If it stays low then a trip to the vet would be a good idea.

10-21-2009, 04:44 AM
I just got home at 1140 pm. I took Damisi's temp and it is up to 99.1. I will take it again in the am and see what it is then. I will be taking her in to the vet to see if she's okay. I'm worried about infection, but apparently she's been better tonight. Not growling as much. Does anyone know if she does have an infection, at this stage, will she spontaneously abort? And will I notice it?

lvoss
10-21-2009, 04:49 AM
It would depend on the type of infection. If something like pyometra the signs can be very subtle (lethargy, lack of appetite, increased drinking) and bloodwork and ultrasound would be needed to help diagnose it.

nomrbddgs
10-21-2009, 05:03 AM
Thanks Lisa, I don't know if it would be pyro. She's ravenous-even for her, and definitely not lethargic, she's actually a little bit more busy than before. She's definitely also jealous if the other dogs come over to me or play with me. I did go away this past weekend and am wondering if that would have had anything to do with it also. There's so many variables here. But I will be taking her in to the vet. I'll call tomorrow to get an appt for a checkup.

I am glad her temp is going up.
Are you still thinking about taking her to the vet?

nomrbddgs
10-25-2009, 12:13 PM
I did phone the vet and asked the Dr his opinion of bringing her in for testing. He said at this point, don't bother. She's eating-has never really stopped and her temp is more near normal, so rather than pick something up there, just wait it out. If her temp was down again and she wasn't eating, then he would be more worried. He said right now the fetus' are implanting so a drop may be normal for her. Her biting may have been because of jealousy at the baby gate/door. I had a baby gate up by the back door. My doorway has three steps down to a small landing that leads to either downstairs or outside. She could see outside, so I put the door back up, and she's been a bit better with the doorway thing. The one girl was petting all of them over the baby gate and I'm thinking Damisi got jealous and went to bite Shadow and hit the girl instead. And Sam (my daughter) was moving all of them away from the baby gate with her leg, and Damisi bit her then, but, again, I'm thinking Damisi thought she was biting at Shadow. She's better with the other dogs if I'm not here, she doesn't snark as much at them. But if I'm here, she wants to be right beside me all the time. Last night/yesterday, she laid in my arms for hours at a time, which is definitely not like her. So, it may be a bit better now with the door up there's not as much anxiety over what's at the back door. I asked the vet about an ultrasound (they do them at 28 days) but he said don't stress her out anymore right now, just to leave it be. I'm hoping to get her eyes done on Nov 13, they are having a clinic then, and I think that should be enough for her to get stressed out about. Hopefully, we have turned the tide now!

lvoss
10-25-2009, 06:23 PM
I am surprised that an eye exam or an ultrasound would be all that stressful. My dogs really don't mind eye exams except Rio and that is only because she had a bad cat scratch to her eye and now doesn't like drops in her eyes. She isn't really "stressed" as much as she is a "difficult patient" because she squeezes her eyes shut extra tight every time she sees the dropper bottle. Nicky just had his CERF exam yesterday and he just stood there patiently waiting for the doctor to be done. He thought it was a great outing, he got alone time with me while we waited for his eyes to dilate and I bought him a chewie as treat for the drive home for being such a good dog.

nomrbddgs
10-25-2009, 11:06 PM
I think because she is acting the way she is, that he is worried about other dog's and not her per se. If she's jealous of the other dogs here, what will she be like with a bunch of them around her that she doesn't know? I don't take her to the vet all that often either, so she's really not used to it there, and it is a new vet for her as well.

Okay, it's official. Damisi is pregnant. I still have three weeks to go and by now usually they look sort of the same as normal-maybe a little pot. Especially with a first time bitch. HOWEVER, Damisi is getting big already! Not only does she have a pot belly, she is widening on the sides and her butt is getting wider. All her teats are out. No, I did not miscalculate the dates. If she has 8 puppies, I'm going to kill myself. LOL I can't even find good homes for the extras I will have yet, never mind a bunch more! (There is just a lot of weird people out there right now) I can just see it now-me with 5 b/w puppies forever. LOL
On a lighter note, I am getting her eyes CERF'd tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Hey Arlene,

Has her behavior settled down?

It's better than it was, but she is still testy. She snarks, but not as loud as before and there hasn't been any more unpleasant behaviour. She throws up quite a bit, so I've changed her feedings to 4 times per day. She was getting 1 1/2 cups a day and now she is getting about 1 2/3-2 cups somewhere in there. And I've just changed it two days ago.

First off...congrats Arlene!!!! Can't wait to see puppy pics!!!

To Basenjimamma...When Ruby was pregnant with her litter she was sick a lot.

A friend of mine is a critical care vet (cancer, etc.) and his practice is also the top repro vet in the state. He was telling me that they had a bitch in their care who couldn't eat anything at all without getting sick so she was on IV her whole pregnancy - she delivered healthy pups and she was fine herself following the pregnancy/delivery.

B/w's are harder to place than reds-especially up here. But a b/w litter it will be as I bred b/w to b/w. I'm also partial to b/w.

Isn't it dependent on the color genetics of the sire and dam? Perhaps you could get r/w too? This is a litter from a b/w to b/w breeding which has both b/w and r/w puppies

I believe Sharla on these forums bred B/W to B/W and got more R/W than B/W pups. It is a 3 in 4 chance that a puppy in a B/W to B/W will be B/W and only a 1 in 4 chance that it will be R/W.

As for placing B/W, what I find is that most people come to my house expressing an interest in only R/W but leave feeling B/W isn't so bad and most fall in love with Rally. She is a great ambassador for B/W. She is a happy yodeler, very affectionate, loves attention, and knows she is the most beautiful basenji (this is the trait that makes her such a good show dog).

Just remember the 63 day estimate is from day ovulation so it can be earlier than 63 days if the first breeding happened after ovulation. Someone here in California just had a litter that they weren't expecting until maybe Wednesday by the breeding dates and the girl delivered Monday.

nomrbddgs
11-26-2009, 06:45 PM
I hope she waits until at least Sunday or Monday to deliver if she's going to be early-gives them a better chance.

And the Bizarre keeps being Bizarre here at Dogo Habari. Remember earlier in the posting the Odd temperature. Well, it's still odd. Yesterday was 97.8 and today is 97.7. I guess she has a low base rate, maybe that is why she is so active all the time, to try to keep her temp up. I'm going to run another thyroid panel on her after she delivers. Maybe I'll run the more specialized test that I ran on Zina. Her values were all midrange, but you never know. I can see and feel the puppies moving now and am playing the waiting game. Now, she doesn't look big at all-definitely not for four puppies!

After I talked to the vet, it was up to 99.1, but it never went any higher than 99.5. The vet kept saying don't worry too much since she's active, eating, drinking and healthy. It hasn't dropped suddenly, just gradual until the 97.8, 97.9. My friend is on standby with her cell phone on all the time, so she's ready, the vet's ready (I talked to him on Monday when I did the x-ray-he said everything is on standby and if I need him he'll be ready as well) and I'm definitely ready. She's been moved into my bedroom, the whelping box is ready, I've got the shower curtain to protect my bed, baby blankets washed and ready, water bottles at the ready, hemostats are always sterile-just a waiting game now! Here are two pics from just about two minutes ago.

Congratulations on your litter, which one of the pups is a Tri? i can't tell from the pics

It is the 2nd one in the picture, the one you can't see the head, only the body and back feet. It looks to me like there is brown on the legs where the others have black. Is that right Arlene?

And congrats on a nice litter....were you wanting girls?

nomrbddgs
12-03-2009, 08:54 PM
Yup, you're right Pat. I did want a girl, but at least have something of the line. With my luck the tri boy will turn out the best. I didn't want a tri, but if he's the best, he's the best. What am I gonna do? The Tri boy has only a half collar and he seems to have more red on his one back leg. But there is also a nice black boy that doesn't have much white on him either. We'll see in about a week how they are coming along.

Thank you everyone for your congrats and good wishes.

Well, my choice is always to the less "loud" markings... I don't care for lots of white on any color. My Maggii was my best show dog, did the most winning... and had no white on the fact other then around the muzzle and a 1/2 collar, but on the off show side. Legs were three with white only about 1/3 of the way and one almost to the elbow

I'm really not sure at this point which one I will keep. Scott wants to come up in about six weeks to see them, and Sue may keep one, and me. I do have one buyer that I kept and they'll be thrilled with anything, and they seem to be easy to work with if I want to show him and keep him intact. So any one of them is a possibility.

I agree Arlene, that white on the face will be around his muzzle and a spot on the head, the line inbetween will most likely totally close. And yes, a very small white collar. Funny however is that the legs stay pretty much the same (at least I have found that). Example would be what I call "mitten" feet where the white is only on the foot, seems that it stays that way as adults, still just around the foot, it doesn't get smaller making more of the foot the regular coat color

I like his markings, they'll probably be nicely subtle. I think lvoss posted some earlier, but for some more comparison, Zoni's markings at roughly the same age were

http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/qq25/wbunyard/No3girl_6_3.jpg

and they ended up like this

http://i430.photobucket.com/albums/qq25/wbunyard/Zoni/IMG_1083_edited-1.jpg

She's more on the flashy side though. You can't even tell that the stripe connects from her head to her neck when her ears are up, the wrinkles hide it.

Congrats, again! I can't wait to see your pups grow up. I love black & whites. I can't wait to get another some day.

I'm not sure I will put it in at all, but I'm sure Scott would like at least his with his suffix. No, he's not co-breeder at all. I'm just playing with it.

As for 'A Bluestones', 'A' does mean 'of' just a shorter way of putting it.

It could also end up being
Dogo's Man in Black. I don't necessarily think it needs my full kennel name either.

Arlene, I am curious why do you shorten your kennel name to Dogo instead of Habari? Dogo seems to be more commonly used in our breed, with 22 dogs other than your litter having it in their name and at least 1 born just last year. There are only 2 dogs with Habari in their names.

Now, we should have come up with this sooner! But I think I like the names I've chosen-except for Black Knight-I may change that one. If I'm not putting in Bluestones, I should be able to put my full kennel name. When I think of Dogo, I think of the Argentino as well. Yes, they definitely are. Their eyes are now opened. The tri just having one eye partially opened this am. All the blacks were opened two days ago. So now they are really stariting to explore their surroundings. I've reintroduced Damisi to the pack with supervision but haven't let her outside with them yet. She bit Sugar in the butt once, but that was about it. I have to get them more sure of each other in the next two weeks. The puppies will be going out in the dining room in the next little while and Damisi has to feel comfortable with the others before then.

Poor Misi was getting a little bored with just her and the puppies. She came out and wanted to play, but, with another intact bitch she is naturally protective. So she's not sure how to handle herself.

Here's another video link I just loaded.
