I feed Storm and Nik Canidae All Lifestages and they really love it, but their favorite non-kibble foods are:
yogurt
cheese (cottage or any other type)
eggs
steak
seafood
Nikki loves oranges, too - go figure!
And for biscuits treats they love Nutro puppy biscuits or ProPac NutRNipz.

My b's favorite snack is caramel. If you have a caramel in your hand she will hunt you down and try and take it!!!

LOL! That's funny that your b hunts you down for it!
Storm's got a passion for black walnuts (bizarre, I know). My Mom baked me some killer black walnut cookies around Christmas time, and the smell alone had him at my heel and sitting and lifting his paw without being asked to. He's such a ham when he's begging! Ask him to sit and give paw for a regular biscuit and you get a disgusted do I REALLY have to look - a reluctant butt plop on the ground, and a slight paw raise. After he finishes the biscuit he looks at me like, is that all there is? I did all that for a dry biscuit...humph! lol!

our boy wakes froma dead sleep as soon as the odor of any ice cream carries thru the air ducts. We just give him a taste, but if we could ever carry ice cream into the obedience ring, he'd surely earn High Trial that day.

Jazzy's favorite time-consuming snack is peanut butter stuffed in a bone.
She loves that, and makes all sorts of wicked noises if she even thinks Gypsy {our other dog} is even remotely interested.
For a quick snack, it's popcorn all the way. If you want to see a dog fly, just start up the popcorn popper! She just likes regular popcorn though, not the sweet kettle corn.

Squiggy is that way also. Give him a vegie or better yet a fruit and he is all happy.
He gets so excited when I have fruit. He loves grapes (which I dont give to him anymore), so now his new favorite is watermellon, strawberries, and tomatos.
He turns his nose to bread, crackers, pretzles and popcorn.

My two eat anything we're eating! Their food is Wellness mixed in with water and a few scoops of Merricks (anything) on top.
They love cottage cheese; cheese; meat/chicken; egg; oatmeal in the winter and hamburger meat. They won't eat veggies. I've tried and unless it's covered with a gravey, they just won't eat it. Savannah likes peaches in small pieces.
I feed Duke the Original Science Diet for puppies. I'm not sure it's OK to give him anything different for fear of messing up his digestive tract. Does anyone give their Basenji fish oil or olive oil in their food to keep their coat healthy and shiny? A groomer suggested I do that. I'm waiting to get my copy of the Basenji Owner's Manual. What type of food is best for the Basenji? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I just feed Jazzy Purina puppy chow -- she's 1 /12 yrs old. She has a beautiful coat; soft and shiny. She appears to be very healthy and is definitely active {despite how she appears at those shows, Bryan. LOL}.
I don't give any supplements besides the usual doggie "snacks"-- rawhide, peanut butter stuffed bones, grilled chicken strips, etc.

Unfortunately for me, my Weim masi, is allergic to beef, so I can't give beef based treats in the house, so for the most part they get all natural treats, and practically no store bought treats. They go crazy for frozen peas and icecubes. We feed a bunch of different foods, I like to switch around every couple of months or so between Solid Gold Wolf King (Bison and Salmon....no beef ;)), Canidea (turkey, chicken, lamb), and Innova (either the VO, or regular).
Luckily we have a large plethra of cultures moving into our little city, so there are some really *yummy* things at the grocery store to feed my guys, like chicken feet and fresh green tripe (the later unfortunately is from a cow). I was told yesterday that they had Lamb HEADS the other day!!! Needless to say I was all excited.
They don't get the very very special treats too often but they sure do love them when they do. I get them marrow bones too....I have to take out the marrow for masi to eat it unfortunately, but every so often we can get lamb ones from the butcher. If I could I would feed a complete raw diet, but I can't manage that currently, so they get supplemented raw/fresh foods with their kibble, and the Kibble is the highest quality available.
They don't get rawhide, but they get pig/cow hooves every so often. For some reason Masi can have have the hooves, I think its because they don't have any meat proteins in them, because hooves are made from the same thing that Hair is made from, technically its "dead". So, she can have those. I give them dehydrated chicken breasts, they like those, and Turkey/Lamb Jerky from solid gold. Pretty much anything dog safe they get to eat :)

Abbey loves dry food and and also gets half a pouch of moist food daily. I hold up two or three choices--chicken, beef or lamb--and she paws the one she wants. She loves any vegetable raw or cooked. She loves scrambled eggs, and likes to watch the entire process when I make them from carton to pan. She does not like fruit, bread, crackers, or milk, although she gets a few licks of yogurt occasionally.

Kiora loves food....she is very food motivated. I feed all my dogs Healthwise Chicken and Oatmeal, as training treats I use Bil Jac Liver treats, and for chewing on I use Peanut butter filled Kongs and occasionally a pressed Rawhide "bone". She loves soda also...if someone sets their soda on the floor she comes and knocks it over so that she can drink some...naughty puppy...lol.

Tucker eats SG hund n flocken w/ a scoop or 2 of Merrick or Wellness canned on top.
He loves people food (cheese, chicken, tuna, beef, etc..) but I think his favorite training treat is Liver Biscotti.
Occassionally he'll get a filled hoof, or a bully stick to gnaw on, but those are few and far between.

Sahara is fed Beneful Puppy dry with Beneful Moist on top. She loves them all, but Lamb/Rice the most. Sahara also loves doggie Ice Cream Treats, pretzels, Liver treats, grilled chicken and Dingo chicken/rawhide stick treats. She also likes watermelon, frozen green beans and ice (crushed from the ice maker). She loves Southern Ice Tea with sugar and Lemon, she is such a southern bell. haha

We use Timberwolf - Lamb Barley & Apples
http://www.timberwolforganics.com/product_p/lba.33.htm (http://www.timberwolforganics.com/product_p/lba.33.htm)
It's great for basenji's sensitive tummies - really pure products, good essential oils. We started him on it even as a puppy (recommended by the breader), we tried to switch him to a more generic brand and our basenji would have nothing to do with that change.

I feed Sandie pedigree puppy... she also likes carrots, broclie, small pieces of cheese, chicken, she usually like to taste what ever her humans are having... i also give her chicken puppy biscuts, and the small round raw hides...

Be careful with that round rawhide, Sahara almost chocked (spelling) on a round rawhide and she is 8 mos. old. I talked to my vet about rawhide and she said to always pay close attention anytime she is chewing on rawhide, and the bones shape ones are best. Check out the Dingo brand chicken/rawhide sticks, Sahara loves them, they are at Walmart. :o

Oh Sandie is always supervised with rawhides she chews them usually laying at my feet... i get the really small round ones so incase she swallows to big of piece she hopefully wont get it impacted ... but i will check out the brand you suggested...

Define "human food" Does that mean no veggies or fruit or anything like that too?
I think of "human food" as prepared, processed foods.
We do feed our dogs limited foods like that {peanut butter in any form excites them, as do cheez-its and vanilla wafers {thanks to my hubby's habit of snacking with the dogs} }, but they also like some veggies, eggs, etc.

I finally found something Sandie will just not eat... she dislikes lettuce... i always let her taste what were having for dinner ... She ate the tomatoe but the lettuce she spit out ... She loves the broclie in broclie beef... Its almost to the point i am gonna have to get the large container now instead of the small one... Only thing i havent let her try is sweets... we really dont have much sweets... peanut butter i guess is a sweet and she does like that... along with apples and banana's

Joey's breeder suggested raw meat mixed with dry kibble and vegis. He loves carrots, but they have to be firm! We give him a raw egg yolk 2-3 times/wk. Flaxseed oil was suggested for his coat.

Not really its just is easier for us. We eat first, they watch and wait and then they eat in a very controled feeding, always oldest first. We don't feed them in their crates, they're scattered around the kitchen, always in their same spots. We supervise and as each one's finished we take them right out to one of two yards, older dogs in one yard and the younger dogs in another.:)
Treats...Wellness bars, Old Mother Hubbards

Curie and now finally Will both eat Evo. I'm actually looking forward to getting back to the raw diet, but life has been too busy the last year or so. Evo is a good backup for that, to me.
They eat twice a day, morning and dinner. There have been several times that I've tried once a day, but it doesn't seem to please the little beasts, so it's back to twice for the time being. :)
JoeyQ

Yes, it does take more time to feed them a raw diet. I recently gave Joey a lamb bone and he went nuts! I let him have it in his crate so he wouldn't drag the raw thing around the house. He was mad when he couldn't be "free" with it. I guess we can't always get what we want!!!

I am pretty sure that one of my B's is alergic to most meats.
Veggies are popular, surprisingly this includes radishes. Lettuce must not count as a veggie in the basenji reality.
For a biscuit type snack, I have been buying Nature's Animals - Gourmet Select Carrot Crunch. Both dogs love it and it doesn't have chemical preservatives. Petco sells them.

I have been going to a dog/cat "boutique" where the owner is a retired vet. She carries only foods that are good quality and several different brands. The one I am feeding Joey now is California Natural. She also gave me samples of some of the other brands. I can get a list of the brands she carries if anyone is interested. She said EVO is the highest in protein and most are not beef based.
Hi JoeyQ - There is a thread under Puppy Feeding called - Puppy to Adult Food. It's very interesting. Jumoke did alot of homework on the food we buy. It is very thorough. :)

I always fed Senji Pedigree dry food with some bits of meat mixed in sometimes. Now that he's been diagnosed with the liver disease, I'm feeding him Science diet-liver diet formula. He doesn't mind the canned, but isn't too crazy about the dry. The vet said it would be OK to give him his meds with a little bit of turkey or chicken. He also likes cottage cheese and plain yogurt. I give him a scrambled egg every other day too. He likes green beans, but will only eat other vegetables if they were cooked in the same pot with meat. He also eats watermelon, honeydew and canteloupe. His favorite treat is Nilla wafers. He doesn't like many of the doggie treats except for Beggin Strips, but those upset his tummy.

Abbey loves scrambled eggs too. She likes lots of vegetables especially green beans and broccoli. The other day I made brussel sprouts and she kept begging for one so I put one in her bowl. It apparently wasn't what she expected. She kept turning around and looking at me like Am I supposed to eat this thing or what? When she actually tasted it she wanted more! She likes yogurt but not cottage cheese, and no fruit at all. I tried to give her a bite of banana once and she acted like I was handing her a live rattle snake. My vet likes Hill Science Diet so we stick to that for dry food.

My Tobias loves peanut butter! I always mix his dry food w/a little bit of peanut butter and put it in his kong, he loves it and it keeps him occupied for a while. He also loves plain yogurt, and buttermilk. I have heard from my vet that the enzymes in both of these are very good for their digestive systems, just like their good for ours.

Oh, that's the B's favorite, doesn't mean they get to taste it very often.:D :D :D
OK - so some B's are lucky enough to get gourmet food. I thought I'd try some of the Merrick brand canned dog food. I can't believe the food in there . . . Thanksgiving Dinner; Grammy's Pot Pie; Wild Buffalo Grill, etc. I opened a first can yesterday and mixed a third of the Venison Holiday Stew with 1/2 cup of his kibble. Duke was going nuts waiting for me to finish mixing. Needless to say he ate it all. I'm not a fan of canned dog food, but once in awhile - OK.
Question about after the eating is done. I've noticed when Duke thoroughly enjoys some extra cuisine with his kibble that he will clean his face completely - wiping his muzzle with his front paws, then he rubs his face along the sofa bottom, and then further more taking advantage of a blanket to do some face spinning. Does your B's take that much time cleaning up after their meal? I've just noticed this about Duke since having the canned food. He had another third of it this evening. Some doggy-wipes are going on my list! Another Basenji quirk? :p

We just do a third can everytime too. Abbey gets an upset tummy if we overdo it. She does the clean up thing too, wipes her muzzle on the carpet, then sits down to clean her paws. She likes to do the heavy duty paw cleaning at bedtime and gets between each toe and the pads. After that she cleans her tummy.

Oh Storm and Nik LOVE the canned Merrick's food - buffalo is their favorite! I've found that 1/4 can does the trick over their kibble - it is rich stuff, and can lead to unpleasant odors from the posterior area if they get too much

Lexi LOVES lima beans. It's so odd. And the one food she'll wag her tail for is a yeast roll from Logan's RoadHouse. I don't blame her on that one. They are soooo good! She likes peanutbutter, but peanutbutter ice cream makes her crazy! She'll do anything for it! She refuses to eat Frosty Paws though. She also hates lettuce and will RUN from bananas. One of her favorite breakfasts is a piece of cinnamon raisin toast with butter. She likes the crust. Pretzels make her instantly throw up. She turns her nose up to popcorn. She LOVES to lick my yogurt cup when I'm finished with it. Strawberries on the bottom with nestle crunch is her favorite. :)
