Does anyone know this e-book on training?

I agree, but it does take time and patience for some dogs to understand. My basenji, Charlie knows now his crate is his “home”, but from 8 weeks to now at 12 weeks, focused first on making sure he felt safe in it. This meant a Charlie proofed area that ended in his crate if he wanted to be with me while I worked.

We are now introducing away time, but as mentioned, it’s building up from a mere few seconds to hours.

Just a suggestion: When you see him "misbehaving" by chewing on 'less than ideal' items, offer him one of his toys and use the word "trade". In other words, 'chew on this instead', and when he accepts the toy - praise him. And when you see him get the toy on his own, praise him again. It could help him understand that certain toys are just for those times when you want to "rip someone's head off*".

Thanks, lvoss and Agile! I'm traveling for work right now, so I'll take a good look at all the references this weekend (work computer is blocking some of the sites for some odd reason). The RP is mentioned in CU but she gives a shortcut method which is basically what you described as the pre-RP steps. I'm very interested in seeing how this will all work out.

Thanks all for his well wishes, he might need them. So far he is eager, if treats are available, to learn new things, so I am very hopeful.

The shock collar I use is a sports dog. It has given our basenji nearly unlimited freedom on his long romps. He might get shocked twice a week.

It changed his whole life.

When I took my dog to the vet, the entire staff were congratulating me on making a common sense decision. The vet said" That will be one less basenji in the shelter.
Being a dedicated liberal it is painful to see such obtuse political correctness as is often exhibited on this forum.

Be aware if you admit to using a shock collar the PC's will hound you to death.

HA! I voted for Bush twice, I know all about it. Seriously though, I appreciate hearing from someone that has used it effectively and humanely. And while I agree with the theory that walking a dog helps in training, I cannot believe that any human is going to be able to give a basenji, of all dogs, enough exercise through walking unless they can do 20 miles a day. My dog out runs golden retrievers and still wants more, no way I can compete with that just going for a walk. If I can only get my giant hamster wheel hooked up to my generator…

They just loved it even Thorn, ok! he hasn't got the speed or the nice galop of the 3 other, but still is looking for the lure, even among the dogs near the track.
Timbo was jumping in the high grass not to lose sight of the lure, that was really funny, even if it was slowing him down.
Valhi almost got the lure during the run, she is more taken by lure coursing than racing that's for sure.
Eos loves it as much as racing, the first round wasn't that good, I think she was trying to understand why the lure wasn't going round and turning so sharp.
Basenjis are really hunting dogs, and that should be kept in mind by breeders!

Paul and Bill, have an oval track dog, Chiro, #1 basenji in NOTRA last year, he too does not do well at lure trials. He rather races the bunny than catch it.

It does not appear Chiro will do so well in NOTRA this year, too many trails canceled due to a lack of whippet entries. Go figure.

I agree, "Basenjis are really hunting dogs, and that should be kept in mind by breeders!"

Laurie and I have not posted any of our show results, brags, etc. The dogs we breed are fantastic show dogs, not just lure. A properly built basenji is ideal for a fast agile courser, add the hunting instinct, good temperament, and health. This is the cornerstone to any good breeding program, to produce balance dogs beyond just balance or excellence in one aspect.
