Default Better member creation needed

Spammers are starting to blossom on these forums. And people don't seem to be using the "Report button" much.

We need a better system for joining the forums. As it is now, bots can easily join.

First we need a confirmation section where you fill out the randomized words before creating an account.

And then an activation email sent to the user that has to be clicked on to make the account usable.

I once had a forum and behind the scenes you can refuse users by deleting them before they can be active on the forum, the users you do want you sent a conformation email that they have to activitate befor they can post.

I think that would be a better option here too.

Yeah, I had that option on a forum I ran. The problem is that it has to be done manually, and it does require extra work on the forum administrators.

well with these forums that do not have a lot of serious new members each day, i do not think it costs that much extra time, especially not when you think about the advances you have by doing it this way >> no more spam and fake members!

Folks,

This is a wide spread issue with a lot of popular forums. You have to balance ease of registration with security. If you make it too hard to register you will not have any new members.

At Basenji Forums we had random images, random numbers and now we are trying question and answer human verification. Spammers are still getting through somehow.

We believe it's because these are actual humans doing the registration, once signed up bot takes over with spamming links. We know that people in third world countries are getting paid pennies to register and spam forums with revenue generating links.

Unfortunately there is no silverbullet, so we will just have to continue policing and moderating the posts. Thanks everyone who reports btw, we do see quite a bit of spam reports from our members and try to clean up as fast as we can.

I agree that you are doing a wonderful job. When I report a post as a scam, it's removed very quickly. Thanks for keeping our forum running smoothly.

Kudos to you two, I know it's hard work keeping up with the spammers. Bravo

Alex - I feel that although we do have spammers that there is no simple answer. I think we just have to put up with them - after all they seem to be soon removed.

I take this opportunity to say thank you for the very good job you make of this forum.
