Hi folks! My name is Robyn Dubbert and I live in Georgia. I currently share my home with 7 Basenjis ranging from 8 months to 10 years. I see alot of names here of folks I already know but its good to see some new folks as well.

Welcome to the Forum. It sounds as though this 'protectiveness' has been going on a long time. I agree that probably it would be best to get help from a behaviorist but make sure that they have experience of Basenjis. In the meantime keep him away from your guests. It's possible that he's stirred up by the excitement so it's best to try to keep him calm when people are around.

I agree with the others that this is not a common practice among BCOA breeders. I am sorry that this happened to you and yes, you should get your deposit back.

A couple thoughts to welcome baseni_fan to our pack:
Hold on… it's gonna be the wildest ride you have ever been on! Think of it like parenthood: you can read all the books and listen to all the sage advice... but nothing can really prepare for the real thing! Older dogs bond fantastically.. our Rock was over 3 when he came to our home... and our lives were never the same. In a very short time, he became very loyal and bonded to our pack. Each dog is different. I truly think they choose us. Enjoy the hunt! This is a fantastic breed... but be prepared. They can also be the most infuriating. grin I think that is half the fun. I love having a dog that makes me think.
Best of luck to you and your future pup (be it old or young)! Welcome to the crazy (dog)house!

Thanks C&Z, we found those folks a multiple B owner right in their hometown, so they did get to see some B's. They have a couple of cats and are deciding whether it would work out with a pup or an older B.

This weekend we show in Eagleville PA….......very close to Philly;) 🙂 .
