fiour basenjis are using a cat box the breeder started this when they were babies we just kept it up hope this helps

@bea I litter box train my babies also, but don't use clay litter.... but sure it is litter for dogs....

yes . i just use the cat box with the dog litter you can buy in the pet supply from chewy.com thank you for the info

I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

I got my pup when he was 7 months and he was sort of house broken. When I took him to the vet I found out that part of his house breaking issues was that he had a bladder infection. If you continually have problems house breaking (like very frequent urination or peeing in the crate) you may want to have your vet test for a bladder infection just to make sure.

Another problem I discovered was that he didn't know how to tell me he had to pee. I hung bells on the door and by having him ring them every time we went out I taught him to tell me when has to pee. It has been great. Some times he rings them just to go out and play, but mostly he rings them when he really has to go out. Now the only "accidents" he's had is when I ignore the bells b/c I am busy. (he literally peed all over the living room the other night because I ignored him)

One other suggestion, make sure you use an enzyme cleaner on any "accident" spots. These really eat away the reminants of the feces/pee so that your b will not recognize the area as an ok place to go to the bathroom

Other helpful tips I got was to be sure you use the same door when you take your b out and take it to the same part of the yard. Give your b LOTS of praise for going outside (and a treat if it is food motivated).

I have 3 basenji and they all are different. My oldest female, Bella doesn't offer to even try to leave the fenced yard, but if an opportunity presents itself she's gone! And being a basenji, once she finds a way out she'll repeat what she learned. I had to stop her from digging at one section of the fence where she had found an opportunity. Perseverance and an automatic squirt gun took about 3 weeks and she doesn't bother any more. Since my youngest female, Angel (a definite misnomer) learns by what the other 2 teach her, I used the same method on her with success, but I never let her in the yard with my make, Mick. Mick is definitely an escape artist. No matter what, he never stops looking for a way out. I stopped the digging when they were little and they don't know they could go over the fence; and I don't allow the neighbor kids to climb on the fence for fear they'll learn that trick. But Mick can find the smallest places and squeeze through. I despaired of having to keep him on a chain for the rest of his life whenever he was out. I finally struck on the idea of using one of those medical cones and I works great! You have to make sure the collar is snug enough it can't be pulled off and I check it every time I take it off or put it on for wear, but so far it's working just great. He has to go out alone because the girls pull it off then he's gone, but I can now leave him in the fenced yard unsupervised. But I've watched him, he never stops looking for a way out.

I've hiked off leash at numerous areas here in the SF Bay area. They love it! Any there was only 1 area that was a problem with ticks. To me after 30 years hiking with them it's the best way to establish a great relationship with them. There's no two ways about it, Basenjis love hiking adventures.
