@basenjicurious It’s great that you’re doing your homework on the basenji. I think the reason you read all these “horror stories” is because they are not your typical dog. They are a beautiful and highly intelligent breed with a very strong prey drive. My Kembe is my first basenji but I was familiar with the breed because my brothers were basenji owners. I got her when she was 1years old - she was returned to the breeder by the previous owners. Kembe has never been destructive, she has free reign of our house, and I can leave her at home alone. It’s extremely important to exercise them regularly - especially exercise and stimulate their minds, and establish a routine (I can set my watch to my dog). They are definitely trainable - it scares me to see how smart she is and also well behaved. Basenjis are extremely lovable and hilariously funny. If I have a treat that my dog especially likes - she will do her whole “repertoire of tricks” without me even asking her. She dances to let me know it’s time to eat and will sit right next to me and hit me with her paw when she wants to go for her walk. I think our basenji chose us - when we went to the breeders home to look at her - She jumped up next to my husband on the couch and curled up! I was sold on her! I really hope you find a basenji that right for you! 🐾🐕🐾

Check with a specialist about the tumour. Is it definitely contained in the toe? If it's spread I wouldn't have it cut into as I feel that this can set off increased growth. As to having a toe removed, one of my bitches had a toe on her front foot removed because it was badly damaged. The vet said that she would always limp but she was back in the show ring after the operation and not one judge she went under noticed the missing toe! She moved as perfectly as ever.

NONE of that erases that breeding to make money is something you pointed out as a legit reason to wait. Please stop.

@cicily-prestridge - You may never find out who the breeder is or health information unless the adoption agency has more information. Where are you located? For health there are DNA tests (cheek swab) available for Fanconi and PRA. You can order them at www.ofa.org

@condesa said in How much puppy exercise?: Thanks so much! Makes me feel better. And I got her from Nocturnal Kennels in NC. Are the sire/dam DNA tested for Fanconi and PRA? Did you check for yourself at www.ofa.org as DNA tests for Fanconi/PRA are public posted for the results. If not you should have your girl tested. It is a cheek swab that you do yourself. You can order it at www.ofa.org and the cost is 65.00 for each test (Fanconi & PRA)

@elbrant Mine prefer the best but it is expensive. Having said that they have all had ribeye, t-bone, shaved steak, NY strip etc. One thing that’s important is that it must be slow cooked so they can absorb the smell for a while. Christmas turkey is always a challenge as it’s four hours of hell before we eat lol. Usually the next day I get that look of disgust that says “ oh my god....he’s trying to feed me dog food!” When they get their regular food again.

@eeeefarm said in Corn chips: white and chalky. I've seen stool like this, but only after it has been left out in the elements. I never considered that it was from poor nutrition or digestive issues. The pumpkin seems to settle doodle's stomach. Too much and she has diarrhea. While I've never noted constipation, the pumpkin seems to work like a probiotic for her. Keeps things going well. So, she gets it most every day. But, just a dab.

My Sarge has a strange thing he does before he curls up between us....he has to sniff my wife's breath ….I guess it's some kind of Basenji DNA testing to make sure it's her....

She's a cutie! Sounds like she'll make a wonderful companion no matter the pedigree. And I second the jumping ability-- once they realize how high they can leap, nothing is safe!

thanks @DebraDownSouth I plan to take him to small claims. I don't want to spend any more time on this, but I also don't want others to be victimized by the same scam.

unless it is real....and I mean real don't. flights that are transatlantic have unique rules for all dogs. As a Special Ed teacher fake service and support dogs hurt a lot of people with real needa.

@sammm Basenjis are a long and winding road. My first was a challenge at first as I had no idea that a Basenji was different from a “normal” dog lol. After the first year, I found myself looking for information on the internet to find out why he was so different. At one point I seriously wondered if maybe he was just crazy or something. I was very surprised to find out he was actually just doing normal Basenji things and that they are all like that lol. As with most things, when they are challenging and hard work, the final rewards are greater and more cherished. This year is the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, a great achievement that was not easy, required a lot of hardship and work, along with some luck. But because of those things, the achievement was greater and more rewarding. Those who endure the difficulties and bond with their dogs, would in the end never change a thing. They are very rewarding, over time you will get back more fun, laughs, education, love and affection than you can put in. The day comes all too soon when you will wish they were howling all night in the kitchen because they wanted to be with you or chewing the $20 bills from you wallet because they were bored. Enjoy the moment, that is the Basenji way.

Hi there -- not sure if everyone uses this strategy but i soak some kibble in water and mix in a little peanut butter (so that simba isn't getting too much salt) and then stuff the Kong with that before freezing -- lasts longer and still has the same nutrients as his meals. We have the puppy and the classic and I think they're effectively the same. He also LOVES the blue kong squeaky ball. @schmerla
