Thanks for the kind words, Jill! Natalie had a fun birthday, she's a trooper! She has a great sense of humor, so like you said "it's a birthday she'll never forget"! All is less smelly today, thank goodness! Sharon

The video camera sounds like a good idea, but Cali is still at the point were she chews a lot. She is crated during the day while I am at work. I have only left her alone in the house for about 20 minutes outside of the crate and she was waiting for me at the door. tlbuddy

Jill, Chase and Zahra played with ours so much the first few days that my husband was gone (he just left on deployment) that the batteries are already dead. I am glad that Duke loves the ball! Seko, You could probably order one of these online at one of the links I added. I would get the one with the lights it seems like it is much more entertaining for them and worth the money! Jenn

The neighbors boxer was not so much aggressive with Cali as she was with my brothers boxer. Cali usally plays with their German Shepherd pup and they get along really well. True, I shouldnt have taken Lady anywhere near their boxer, but I thought they would get along because their boxer gets along with the other boxer down the street.. My brother also has a Cane Corso(Italian Mastiff) and a Rottweiler and his Boxer is used to playing with them all of the time because they live together. When I say discipline I mean more of a "time out" in the crate or a stern NO! Sometimes if I clap my hands once and say NO! at the same time she gets the message. I have had her 2 months now and we are both making progress. I am learning what worked for my other dogs does not necessarily work for Cali. I do notice that training her is a lot different from my previous 2 dogs (Pitbull/Rottweiler mix and a German Shepherd). I have been reading a lot of the posts about obedience and training on the forum and it has helped a lot. Cali is like no other dog that I have owned, but I like being challenged.:) :) :)

Oh, I love that. I can totally see it. One of our walks, there was one of those "party here today" balloons tied to a street sign, and we were walking along routinely when it FLAPPED in the wind. Curie hit the dirt, flat, and then took off at top speed in the other direction. I'm convinced she thought it was a bird of prey.

I will definitely try the clips because I am afraid she will get out of her crate when I am not at home and will tear the house up. She constantly pushes her tray out of the bottom. Oh, and by the way, I am keeping my brothers boxer temporarily (Lady) and she is kept in her kennel during the day. I came home from work the other day to be greeted by Lady at the door barking like I was an intruder coming in. Once she saw it was me she got very happy, but she escaped from her kennel and pushed her tray out. Now I am going to have to get clips for her kennel. My brother says she is good at escaping, but has never gotten out of her kennel. Cali was still in her kennel, but she had her tray pushed out and had one of her locks open. Maybe the 2 of them were working hard all day to escape their kennels while I was at work.:) tlbuddy

A quick vet check may be a good idea… if anything, it'll reassure you it's not a health issue or allergy. Do you provide something like a stuffed kong for him to lick at while he's crated? Stuffed FROZEN kong toys work wonders for crated dogs. the toy can be stuffed with tons of things (i.e. peanut butter, cream cheese, kibble, wet dog food, chicken, tuna, even jam a few dog biscuits in it...) it would give him something to focus on besides his back feet. Another way to help (if it is an anxiety/nervous behavior) is Rescue Remedy (or another Bach remedy). these are natural extracts, that work over TIME to help ease anxieties.

On tv this morning they showed some dogs that were to be adopted at Petsmart from the Humane Society. One of them they said was a basenji/terrier mix. That dog was huge and he didn't look anything like a basenji to me. No batwing ears but the tail was curled.

when Roxy wants to play she'll usually push me! lol she runs up to me and does a little grr and pushes me again, if i dont pay attention to her she runs to get her ball and pushes me with it in her mouth until i grab it from her and throw it. if im sitting down on the couch or something she'll run up and throw herself on me jump off look at me and run off so ill chase her. its sooo cute! ahh i love her!!!!

lenora, i just read your profile, funny. my mom is in alabama, a nurse, and enjoys celtic music, she even took a trip to ireland recently. this dog was purchased in south florida, there was a female too. cigar bugsy, i beleive is the name. they would be about 6 or 7 nowadays. i was just curious what happened to them. i did check the zande pedigree search, there are no others pups registered. somewhat of a relief, so no one does this but the mother, Guinivere, was rescued from someone locally who was about to make a puppy factory out of her. i knew one older couple in dothan that had a few basenjis, some were show, mostly rescues. my mom is in abbeville, she just has pets now.

LOL…. these are soooo funny...... Recently my husband picked up Bandit off his lap and positioned him back on the chair trying not to wake him..... well Bandit screamed blue murder holding his paw up.... My husband and I jumped with fright, I accused him of being rough...... he can be heavy handed..... my husband swore his innocence...... Alfie the Lowchen came barrelling in licking Bandit thinking Bandit was hurt.... what a circus!!! We gently picked Bandit up checking him all over and gently put him on the ground..... then all of a sudden Bandit ran down the hall with Alfie in hot pursuit!!! Wwwwelllll!! My husband and I looked at each other in utter amazement and both shouted Bandittttttttt!!!!! Talk about Oscar acting!!!! LOL

You know, everything can be dangerous. I think that's why you just need to watch them. Our vet's office/training facility recommends that people use ONLY blue Kongs because the pieces show up better on X-rays, and they've had a LOT of dogs come through which have managed to chew off chunks of Kong that have gotten either lodged in the throat or were obstructing bowels. The recommendation is not that no one use Kongs, but that you buy blue and watch the dogs carefully. Gypsy gagged on the squeaker that she pulled out of a stuffed dog toy. Fortunately, she got it out on her own, but it could have gotten ugly. Jazzy chokes on cow hooves. She chews them down to a certain point and then chokes on the end. I still let her have them, but I have to be watchful of how much is left so I can take it away when she reaches that point. I've had a few friends whose dogs have needed medical attention from bones {raw and cooked}, sticks, rocks, etc. Anything can be a problem. I've had/been around dogs all my life, and I have never had a problem with the rawhides. I'm not saying that makes them "safe", it's just that they are no more "safe" nor "dangerous" than anything else. Bottom line, watch your dogs no matter what you choose to give them.

Renee, I am very sorry that my answer is not going to be a happy one, but it is honest and it is said with great concern. You have a 4 mo old pit bull mix. Do not add another dog. PB are bred to be dog aggressive. They almost ALWAYS do great with other dogs until they mature. I cannot begin to count even in just one year the number of people who post on the aol boards about their maturing PB or PBmix killing their other pets. They are always SOOOOO shocked as they just LOVED EACH OTHER… til that day. Many PB and PB mixes do great with other dogs and pets. But you don't know til they mature if they will. It is the one reason I support shelters euthanizing them all (and Rotties and chows) except when a breed rescue takes them. There are dogs (and btw I have chows and rotties) who simply need homes that are experienced with that breed to own, and PB are one of them. People with PB experience get them KNOWING that when the dog matures, they may have to safely keep them away from every other pet... and they are physically, emotionally, and financially able to provide that type of separation. IF you are, then you might consider another pet now. But get the pet for YOU, not for the sad PBmix. And frankly, because Basenji can also be snots about other dogs, I would consider a much much more "pack" oriented dog breed that is KNOWN to not be dog aggressive if you want a new pet. And please, let Basenji rescue know about this fellow so they can help with him.

I can understand the need to give him a bath. For me, I didn't want to be the bad guy in his eyes when he was a pup and me new to him, so I took him to a pet salon. (Yes - if he gets spoiled, then so do I for this job.) They have the right equipment to keep him in the tub, clean ears and clip toe nails. It cost me $25 including tip . . . but at least I didn't have to do it and he was so happy to see me when I picked him up. I felt like his hero.
