    I have seen people talk about those who say their dog is friendly then the dog snaps. I have been one of those people twice and I am still surprised. Zoey loves every dog she meets and thinks every dog loves her even the ones who are barking like they want to bite her head off. But now 2 times she has snapped and growled. The first was a sheltie and she was tied out with me in the front yard the woman let her dog up to sniff with zoe and with no provocation zoey started growling and snapping. Ok I figure she is protecting her territory against an unknown dog because every other dog has been welcomed with joy. But today while starting our walk, we were across the street from our house a woman who's dogs have interacted with zoe before Though this was way back in sept) wanted to meet our new B chief so when we walked over zoe immediately became very aggressive and started snapping and growling wanting to fight. We were both shocked because the dogs have played before. Her dogs are collies. I cant figure out why zoe would hate this type of dog. It seems to have come out of nowhere, it has only happened these 2 times. Is there anything I can do in a case like this?

    How old is your girl? Could she be coming into season? My bitch gets very hormonal and moody in the months leading up to her season. I give her Hormonise and 'Stroppy Bitch' which seem to help a bit.

    She is 16 months. No she isnt in season right now in fact we are getting her spayed tomorrow. And the first time with the sheltie was around a month ago. Not that they ever met because we live east coast and my mom is west coast but my mom owns shelties wonder what she is going to think when I tell her this?

    She may be a bit protective of the pup…. and she is growing up now too, their attitudes change with age and what they will or will not accept, where maybe before it was not an issue.

    She was also unable to leave. It is not uncommon for dogs to growl or even snap at other dogs who are in their space when they are on a leash or tie out because they do not have the ability to leave.

    Also, alot of dogs are really rude and adult basenjis do not tolerate "rude" well. Many dogs rush up into other dogs' space which is very rude. So in the case of the Sheltie in the front yard, the provocation could very well have been the dog invading her personal space without her permission. The second incident could very well have been exactly what Pat said, her protecting her puppy pack member.

    Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

    What type of training are you interested in? Is this a housebreaking issue, obedience problem, or some behaviour you want to discourage? Since you have posted in behavioural problems, I assume you are having some difficulties with something. If you are more specific it might be easier to point you in the right direction, i.e. to an obedience trainer or an animal behaviourist.

    My son has been afraid of animals his entire life. We didn't know it until we were visiting a friend when he was 1 year old and their cat WALKED across the room. He freaked out. From that point on he was afraid of any live animal, but loved stuffed animals. He is 6 now and we just got an 8 week old Basenji. We talked about it alot, (he has slowly gotten used to our friend's cat, but every time the animal made a sudden move he jolted). He was excited to get the puppy, and we sat with him while he got used to exactly what the puppy would do. It has only been 2 months and my son is so good with our dog that he is not afraid of the dogs across the street who are high strung little fluffy things that always sent him runnning and screaming into the house. When I asked him about it he said he wasn't afraid now because he had one now. We waited to get a dog until both of our kids were older and could handle some responsibility. It was the best decision we made. He is still uncomforable around large dogs and other large animals, but has made remarkable progress. I don't know how your nephew will respond, but as he gets older he may realize that he has some control over the animals and that may help. Good luck!!!

    I think neutering him will do the trick. Max never mounted anyone or anything after he was neutered :) Tyler, the male that I have now, was used by a backyard breeder for breeding. He was neutered at the SoCal Basenji Rescue–I think he was about 4 or 5 when that was done. I have him and his daughter (who was spayed), and I haven't seen Tyler do any mounting since I've had them (about 6 months now).

    Thanks for your replies. I guess in the spontanaity of the moment I did as I do with my other dogs, a no and then a quick taking the thing away since I'm boss and I'm the owner of everything ultimately. I do believe Rowdy was not being the bad growling type bite – he took his front teeth and nipped at my arm, pinching it, but it hurt! I will try to work on the "leave it" command, since I taught that to my mom's poodle and it worked well. Rowdy is smart and is finally getting some of the house rules down. Though he's sneaky when he isn't resting beside you and you forget to watch him... :)

    my dog plop herself down when she sees another dog or person. I believe she does this in play.
