• As we are jetsetting off to Crufts, I was wondering if some of the lucky exhibitors could explain to me how the English show scene works, (for Crufts)…

Do all the dogs entered have to be qualified ??? If so how do you qualify ??? Is there a limit on the number of dogs in each breed that can be entered ??? Is it first in best dressed when entries are open then once they reach the number of entries allowed, thats it ???

I might be confusing this with other shows, perhaps in USA :o...

All of the dogs entered for Crufts have to qualify, there is no limit to the number of dogs that can be entered, you can if you wish enter more than one class if the dog is eligible.

If a dog has a stud book number it is qualified for life. You can download a Crufts schedule if you go to www.fossedata.co.uk, it will tell you in there what wins are required to qualify. Fossedata also record the results of Championship shows.

We look forward to seeing you at Crufts, not very long now!

  • Thanks Moetmum, I am sooooooooooooo excited… Its going to take forever to get to March !!! Told the kids on Xmas day about it, as a huge part of their Xmas pressie, and they are sooooooooo excited as well. Im just praying that the ACD's and B's are NOT on the same day...

Just had a quick look at the Crufts website, and I cant get onto the schedule page... Aaaaaaaaargh... Will try again later...

Ok can I just bomb you with a few more questions ???

Looking at last years B results. Both Veteran Dog/Bitch had 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, then Res and VHC. I dont understand what the Res is ??? I presume the VHC is very highly commended ??? But if the dog was VHC, (providing Im right about that),wouldnt it have been placed ??? Also why dont the other classes have this Res and VHC ???

What is Special Junior ??? Is it just the Junior age ??? I guess the word Special is confusing me :o... What age is Junior ??? Same with Special Puppy, and what is the age for Puppies ???

What is the difference between Post Grad and Limit ??? Is there an age limit on these 2 classes ???

What is Good Citizen Dog/Bitch Scheme ??? That one has really thrown me !!!

Now I just want to see if I have everything right here... Does the winner of all these classes, i.e. Veteran, Special Puppy, Special Junior, Post Grad, Limit, Good Citizen Dog Scheme, and the Open all compete for the Ch certificate, and the the Res Ch certificate ??? Then for BOB, the Ch dog against the Ch bitch ???

Sorry about sooooo many q's, I just really want to get it into my head, BEFORE I get over there. I dont want to sit down on the first day and spend hours trying to work out the system, therefore losing the thrill of watching the judging, IYKWIM 😉

It is exciting, I haven't entered yet though! If you go to the fossedata site, as I suspect you did, the Crufts you clicked gave last years results, scroll down and click on the Crufts further down, that will allow you to download the schedule.

The winner of each class does compete for the CC in each sex and then the best of each sex compete for BOB. I was lucky enough in 2008 to win the dog CC and limit bitch, a fantastic day as you can imagine!

The Res = Reserve which in the UK is 4th and VHC is very highly commended, 5th. If there is no mention of these in the class there probably weren't enough dogs in the class to award them. The Special Puppy and Sp Junior are called this because Crufts is the only Championship show where a dog competing in these classes would normally be over age as they extend the date, if that makes sense!

There is no age limit for Post Graduate and Limit, to be eligible for Post Graduate you count your 1st placings, once you have 5 (in PG or Limit) you have to go into limit, Limit is 7 1st places in limit or open then you have to go into open. If you win a CC and are out of the age restricted classes you have to go into Limit or Open. Wins in Puppy or Junior don't count but CC's do.

Good Citizens is a Kennel Club scheme of basic obedience to more advanced, bronze, silver or gold. If you have a certificate for any of these you are eligible to enter GC.

When you see the schedule it will explain the rules and regs much more clearly!

  • Thanks forthat info moetmum, i think I might have a bit of homework to do beforeI get over there !!!

If I have read the schedule properly, (and not read last years one !!!), it looks like B's are on the second day, and ACD's are the third day, (or the other way around ;))…

    So that leaves the first day and most of the last day for S H O P P I N G 😃 🙂 😉 😃 !!!

  • You are welcome! Basenji's are on Saturday 12th March.

Expect huge crowds around the shopping area's. Wear very comfy shoes, it is a long and tiring day, and don't forget to bring some photo's of your dogs for us to see!

  • Hi

If ACD stands for Australian Cattle Dog then they are on the Friday ( 2nd day ), which is Working and Pastoral Breeds.

You will have a lovely time, lots to buy and see, but like Moetmum says do wear comfortable shoes coz you'll walk miles !!!! also take a drink with you, it's gets very very crowded on the Sat and Sun, the Fri should be quieter.

  • Im going to be there Saturday with basenji and I think Sunday with the chihuahuas 😃 Hope to see you there Saba!

  • Thanks everyone for the info… Scoops yes ACD is Australian Cattle Dogs :), Im just so used to writing ACD, I forget that many people dont know what it is :o...

So I need, in order: empty credit card :D, comfy shoes, water, more cash, cheques, travellers cheques :D, patience of a saint, pics of the dogs, more money, ohhhhhhhhhh did I mention more money 😉 😃 🙂 :p ...

At my age I really shouldnt be wishing the year away, BUT, Im just soooooooooooooo excited, and March just cant get here quickly enough !!!

  • You might want to think about taking some lunch in with you as well as the food is SO expensive at the NEC! I think it cost us about ?20 last year for 2 coffees and 2 sandwiches! We usually buy something from the local supermarket and take it with us 😃 Saves the pennies….

  • The entry details for Crufts have just been published - 29 dogs entered, and 32 bitches. No idea how many overseas entries are in this, but hopefully a few will be coming over.

  • That's not a bad entry. Dobes are well down !!!

  • Thanks for that Elscodobermann… Just cant wait to see them all...

Mmmmmmm getting very excited now... Just trying to get our passports organised, what a flaming nightmare, I wish I had done it a little earlier though ...

Have taken updated pics of the 4 of them, BUT, Im not really happy with the youngest, Java's, pics. Unfortunately this is a bad time to be taking pics of him, cos he is 7 1/2 months, so is at the gangly stage, a bit bum high, etc, etc. He does look a lot better than a few weeks ago though, so might take some more of them, just before we leave, methinks !!!

Could anyone 'in the know', please let me know how many Australian Cattle Dogs are entered, please ???

  • I hope you get the passport sorted soon! What date are you flying out?

The entries for Australian Cattle Dog are 15 Bitches 22 Dogs 37 Total

Look forward to seeing your pictures!

  • Thanks moetmum,

We are flying out on the 7th, and we arrive on the…..................................7th... How clever is that !!!!!!!!!!

Yes I hope to get the '95' pics of us taken tomorrow and I think we are all set to send it in, and should be back in 10-14 days... I will be glad when its all done... OVER IT :D...

Well the ACD entries, for Crufts, are probably more than what we would get at most of our bigger shows... Isnt that embarassing ??? Such a shame that our Aussie 'icon' is in such a poor state in the home country 😕...

You are welcome Saba, I hope you have a good flight over to the UK.

It is sad when our native breeds are in decline, it's the same over, such a shame 😞

  • I hope you enjoy your experience at Crufts! Have a good flight etc.

    Theresa

  • ACDs have become more popular here over the last few years. Is it that they are more used as working dogs in Australia? My husband's uncle used to breed them for working and for him there were no better dogs.

  • Saba - are you at Crufts on the first day (Gundogs) we'll be there then but it might be difficult to find you. Any way we'll look out for you at the ACD ring (no.6) on the second day - my second favourite breed (the Anatolians) are in ring 5 next to the to the ACDs. They will be in Hall1.

I'm sorry that you're having problems getting your passport, I know just how stressful that can be!
