Post sterlization & hernia operation

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Zsa Zsa came back home today after her operation and the vet told me to watch her incisions and to wipe it down with water should it get aggravated. She is my 1st female and wanted to know if this is normal and what else can I use to keep the area clean & disinfected (polysporene) and aside from not letting her play with her 2 big brothers or go down stairs for 2 weeks (this is going to be interesting) what else do I need to worry about.
    Tks,

  • I have never had to put anything on a spay incision… just keep her from licking it.... and I never restricted play per say.... all of my bitches would indicate when they felt good enough to play...

  • Thank you for the information.

If all else fails, a thyroid panel might be needed– but typically that is more base of and tail area, all-over etc.

I, too, would have the umbilical hernia fixed when she is spayed. In fact, that's exactly what we did when Blaze was neutered last month at 6 months of age (we are not going to do any sports activities with him such as lure coursing, so waiting until his growth plates were closed wasn't a concern).

Read all the quotes and statements on Fanconi and work out how contradictory it is for yourself. I don't think many UK Basenji owners do a Fanconi 'strip monthly' and certainly some breeders do advocate no test. Are such breeders irresponsible not necessarily. A 'probable' diagnosis on any medical condition is hardly a scientic diagnosis to say the least but testing is better than not and is certainly better than doing nothing.

Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and good "vibes." AJ is doing grat now. Stools are normal and his activity level is back. You're right…he is a special boy. He did drink lots of water after this little episode, but that's tapering off too. Thanks again, y'all. :)

Health concerns can be expensive. I think it is important to make them as comfortable as you can financially as their guardian, but like dmcarty, you may not need to have the tumor tested. Unfortunately, no one can tell you what the right thing is to do. I found great support from the site by sharing my experiences. And it really helped in those powerless moments where I had to decide the fate of my basenji. Please keep us posted on her and you as well. :)
