Transport Question

Basenji Talk
  • I'm not sure exactly where to post this, so I kind of just waved the mouse and clicked :)

We are hopefully on our way to bringing home our very own Basenji! We are meeting tomorrow with Brenda from Signet and she has an available adult male that we fell in love with (via her website) and are hoping that he is a fit for our family. Brenda suggested we bring a #300 crate. Please excuse my ignorance, but we have a wire kennel for medium sized dogs. Would that suffice or do you recommend we get an actual pet taxi?

  • Jessica, I sent you an e mail at your g mail address.

  • Hi there, I hope your meeting goes well tomorrow, and that he is a fit for your family! Just to be clear… you are driving, and not flying, right? If that is the case, a medium sized wire kennel should probably be just fine. I'd recommend bringing a blanket to cover the sides, just in case he is anxious and you need to block out distractions.

Will all of you be going? Once you get to know this little b, there may be a chance that the kennel is left in the trunk, and he may settle on your lap instead.

Please let us know how it goes! :)

  • Good luck. I'm sure she was saying a 300 for size. A medium wire should be the same size as a 300 plastic crate.

  • Thanks for the advice! I think we will take our kennel. It's a 4 1/2 hour road trip. We will leave here at 7 am! I have one more question, unrelated to the kennel:
Brenda said "Timmy" (our prospective doggie) has never been an only dog, I think she is worried that he may not be a fit. I am a stay-home mom of 3, two of which are rambunctious boys that stay with me, does anyone have any experiences similar to this?

Feel like a kid at Christmas yet?

As far as your other question, I think you just see if it works. I think it is such an individual thing, and there are many individuals involved.

Having said that, I'd suggest you may want to think about picking up a DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) plug in. I think they sell them at Petco/smart. I find it helps ease a dog. And if it doesn't there are zero side effects.

  • Or maybe you'll come home with 2???

YES!!!! I woke up a half hour before the alarm went off!

  • I hope all goes well and everybody gets on so that you can bring the boy home.

  • If he gets along with other breeds of dogs, perhaps taking him to doggy day care or a dog park would help. I would definitely ask Brenda about this first. Some Bs do not get along with small white fluffy dogs as they think they are prey!

both our dogs took about 2 seconds from walking into the room with the needle to walking back out. jonny just looked at the vet, hansel yelped quickly and on our way we went. i cannot imagine putting them out for THAT. but neither one dislikes going either. they both look at it as an AMAZING chance to smell, jump, chase, visit, investigate,… well you get the idea. they love it there. SO MANY dog food bags to smell. lol

No I haven't and I need to… I have taken some great ones of her lounging in the sunshine. She loves taking in those rays....

EL D is almost 4 and his neck is 14. My Vet carries a toothpaste made by C.E.T. that comes in chicken or seafood flavor. It supposed to be better for tartar control.

Shadow also used to 'pick' at his food. He started expanding so I cut back the food at each feeding and now he is eating normally and finishes his bowl when the others do.

Mine usually tuck their noses behind their legs when they are curled up… much like my avatar. :)

On tv this morning they showed some dogs that were to be adopted at Petsmart from the Humane Society. One of them they said was a basenji/terrier mix. That dog was huge and he didn't look anything like a basenji to me. No batwing ears but the tail was curled.
