Has anyone else had issues with this breeder, Lisa Simmons from NY?

Back story: I had contacted Lisa Simmons over a year ago inquiring about any upcoming litters as I am looking for a basenji puppy. I put down the $250.00 deposit for her upcoming litter in December-Feb (approximately). Time goes on, nothing. The dates change frequently from winter to summer. She says she’s breeding her other dog as well. I only get updates when I ask every couple of months. More time goes by. Nothing. It’s been a year. I had been in contact with another breeder who would be expecting puppies end of August. I contacted her again asking whether or not her litter would be born soon and if not I would be going with another breeder. I understand that you can’t control when a dog gives birth etc, but after this much time, I was ready for someone new. As soon as I asked about a refund, all contact stopped on her part. We had been in contact over private Facebook messages which had shown that she saw my messages. Sent her emails, no response. Contacted through Paypal, nothing. Called, straight to voicemail. I then tried posting on her Facebook wall asking about my deposit back which was promptly deleted and I was blocked. Essentially scammed out of $250 and a years worth of waiting.
DO NOT BUY FROM THIS BREEDER.

  • Know nothing about her, but file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, send her a certified letter and a copy to the AKC and Basenji Club of America.

Additionally, she seems to be a member of the Rip Van Wrinkle Club... contact them also: http://www.rvwbasenjiclub.org/ Many clubs have code of ethics rules... and not refunding money after a year is simply unprofessional and a rip off.

You should have a contract or receipt with the payment... hopefully it spelled out refund conditions... but if not, it seems clear she is not holding up reasonable expectations.

  • @DebraDownSouth Thank you so much. I will.

  • She's not a member of the Rip Van Wrinkle Club. I did, however, contact the BBB as well as various scammer websites so others who do research on her name or breeding company don't meet the same fate. Also went ahead and contacted the AKC and BCOA, so hopefully something comes of it.

One breeder from San Diego (Rancho Penasquitos) retired from their day jobs and moved to Texas; Bob & Terry Reed of Illusion Basenjis. Another San Diego breeder (Spring Valley) passed away almost 2 years ago; Doug Joy of Basenjis of Dune. Not all reputable breeders are visible on the BCOA website. Some don't want their kennels named because they do not breed very often. You should contact the breeder liaison via email for more breeders in California and other nearby states. The local breed club for southern California is The South Coast Basenji Fanciers. They can help you find a local breeder. The quickest way to get in touch with them if through their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SoCalBasenjiFanciers Northern California also has a breed club that you can contact, BCONC. Their Facebook page is: https://www.facebook.com/norcalbasenjis

It depends on the cat just as much as it depends on the dog. Does your cat run "prey-like" when frightened? I have 2 cats that have lived with 3 different basenjis. My male cat and my first basenji were pals and often cuddled together. They would wrestle and when the dog got too unruly he'd (the cat) nip him to keep him in line. My female cat ran every time she saw my dog. She was fun to chase and like most basenjis: "thing move, I chase thing!" Cody never ever hurt them and recognized that they were part of his "pack" (for lack of a better term). Cat outside? FORGET IT! He never caught one but boy did he try! My cats no longer live with my dogs (I moved and the cats stayed with my parents) and I know my female cat is much happier. Elliot my 3yr old is OK with my cats but Morgan my 1yr old chases them. Neither try to hurt them but the stress of being chased is a lot for a 15 year old cat to handle. [image: 1469113808168-1003649_10151420270322531_1939276400_n.jpg]

@Kipawa: Boy, I will put my flame retardent suit on here before I say this - in the picture of the four basenjis, well, they look so unhappy. ALL of them. I sympathize with the breeder in that she has some medical/mental restrictions, but the look of the breeding facility frightens me. If she has medical/mental restrictions she should NOT be breeding. And I agree about the conditions of the kennels. They are dirty and unkept. And as said, if there are no papers/unregistered AKC then she should not be breeding.
