Only a basenji…..(or a cat)

Basenji Talk
  • Went to the park near our house today, where they are doing some "improvements". We were unaware of the work that's been done, so we were walking our usual lap around the fence line & came upon an area that is under construction. Basically a bunch of bushes were town up from the banks of a creek bed, turning the area into a mud pit with a stagnant muddy water trench running down the middle. Lola ran straight up to the edge, kersplooshed right in, and then hopped out the other side. Booger jumped over the trench. All of the white on Lola was completely covered in dark brown mud that perfectly matched her brindle & made her look like a completely black dog. It was actually really freaky looking to see her with no white. She just had to run & try to play with Booger & paint him with mud in the process. We walked another lap to dry off, and most of the mud came off before we got to the car. They were both still pretty dirty when we got home, and we didn't have time to bathe them before we left for work.
We got home tonight & they're both PERFECTLY clean. Very white white & beautiful soft fur. Andrew asked me if I had given them a bath because they seem so soft & clean. They must have cleaned each other. Awesome!

You're doing a great job introducing the cat to the basenjis, I would continue to do what you're doing, but don't leave them alone just yet. I would keep them in different rooms while you are away. Also, as another person said, the cat and the bird will be more of a challenge, since the cat is more likely to hunt the bird. Keep the supervision going with all three species. My basenjis always wanted to chase cats they saw outside, but did not chase the cats we had, because they had been socialized and they thought of the cats as part of the pack.

Well I will tell you a couple of differences - walking basenjis you typically have 1 boy one girl - and stay away from other dogs. I can walk 2 or 3 bigs and 1 little and they just walk along - not as dog aggressive as some basenjis can be - still as food aggressive. Similar play styles - butt up. Since the basenjis at my house a Seniors - once the bigs get BIG I don't usually let them play together because a 2 year old big anything and a 10 or 15 year old anything not a good combination. The hardest thing to get used to was - they bark. They are VERY attentive to everything outside of the yard when they are out and need to alert me. A 57 lb dog in your lap is heavier than a 20 lb dog and takes up more space. Like basenjis I have some that are on your lap, some right next to you and some within arms length in case you drop something. Like basenjis - they are a female led group BUT they don't seem to have to have that continuous discussion with each other on who is in charge.

Both Abby and Cooper love my cat, love to chase him. He's pretty smart though he's know how to get away from them. We have our formal dining room blocked off with baby gates so he can go in there and eat and not be bothered by the dogs. Plus apparently Cooper looooooves cat food. Then again Cooper loves all food.

Kiro Gurl, That's a great pic. I have a bay window on which my 2 are constantly watching the goings on in the neighborhood. Someone in the house will say, "where's the dogs?" and the inevitable reply is "they're on Neighborhood Watch duty." Needless to say we are alerted to every unwanted intruder…..marauding cats, wilily squirrels, and those despicably lawless off leash dogs (with the occasional 'bad to the bone' large wild bird thrown in for good measure;) ) sigh, I feel sooooo safe. I thank Darwin every day that they don't have opposable thumbs 'cuz they'd be unlocking and opening the door for anyone they deemed as a suitable playmate, tummy scratcher, or cuddler:D ! Now that you have a 'window watcher' too, I suggest you invest in windex. There's nothing better to get those dog snot streaks off the windows!! (BTW...welcome to the forums toddsgirl)
