Question of Spay

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • We have had our Basenji Kenya for about 2 months now. She is 4 months old and we are wondering when is the right time to get her spayed? Our vet told us as soon as possible when we were there last, when she received her last shots but I have also heard we should wait until after her first heat. Any info would be great.

  • If you do it before she goes into her first heat, you won't have to worry about puppies.

  • I would do it before her first heat also… spay her at 6 to 7 months. Usually they will go into their first season around September/October... however some do not read the same books...

  • If I had to do it over, I would have done it before Kate's first heat. She went through false pregnancy immediately after her first heat and still retains that baggy look.

That's interesting because my girl ruby was bred over a year ago (had 6 pups) and the only way you would know she had pups is because one nipple is a little larger and flatter than the others. Granted she's super active and I exercise her a lot, but you would never know she had pups. It is interesting that a false pregnancy would change a body shape and it would stay that way.

  • Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps.

Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.

If you can wait, I would have her spayed in early Summer. I had one rescue whose birthdate was in early January and she came into season in early September. It was a surprise as I just got her and her sire and he was intact also. Luckily I was able to get her spayed ASAP. I have a rescue who is 8 years old and is longer than she is tall. She waddles when she walks, swings her hips. Since I never had a B walk like this I did have her hips x-rayed and thankfully Dr. Tracy rated them as fair. Jennifer

Spayed bitches can attract males for some time after spaying but as Ivoss says it can also be the smell of the infection. It should be quite easy to ascertain where the discharge is from. To my mind a metallic smell means fresh blood. I do hope that you'll get results from the swabs and i'm pleased that you have an open minded vet who is prepared to use another opinion.

@agilebasenji: I have a friend who has a nonbasenji dog that was just diagnosed with Fanconi. They (owner and vet) started the dog on the Gonto's protocal. (yea!) I know there is a Fanconi list, but did not know if it was open to just Fanconi affected basenjis or if other breeds were welcome. Also, is it a yahoo group? thanks It is a yahoo group and it is open to anyone with a Fanconi affected dog, or so I have been told.

@basenji_fan: I've never heard about breeders recommending waiting till they are over a yr old, that is something completely new   there are other threads about this topic. A lot of breeders suggest waiting until about a year old, so that physically the dog is mature before the removal of the sex hormones. I would say *most breeders suggest between six months to a year is great. A lot of people would prefer that their bitch not go through a first heat cycle, and that their male not start lifting his leg…which can happen around six months old.

Spaying a maiden bitch is a much less complicated procedure than spaying bitch who has had puppies. Basenjis can come into heat as early as 6 months old though mine have always come in for the first time at 10 months. As for being interested in breeding please read the thread in the Breeder Talk titled "Interested In Breeding". There are many things to consider before breeding a dog.
