Abby's first training class.

Basenji Training
  • Abby had her first training class yesterday and she made me look really bad. I was telling the trainer about all the bad stuff she does and got her to class and she performed like an angel. I was really taken aback, I didn't know what to think. It's like when your car is acting up and you go to the repair shop and it won't do it.:D

  • Glad to hear she did well. She must have heard what you said and wanted to prove you wrong. They are such stinkers!

:) Watching basenjis coursing really makes me smile. They truly love it. Congrats on the results. Darn those plastic bags! I remember last summer Kevin and Therese had to have a significant number of replacement bags on hand.

Wouldn't go near it! Particularly as he advocates and sells his version of a prong collar - an adversive way to prevent a dog from pulling - and not very successful at that. Try using methods that have actually been proven - scientifically and not by marketing spiel! Great website for finding info is www.dogstardaily.com loads of free stuff to read and watch too. Basically there are no short cuts, good training and manners take time, but if you learn to enjoy the process rather than focus on the results you enjoy and treasure you spend with your B learning together and then the finished behaviour/trick/exercise is just the icing on the cake.

My Basenjis have always loved radishes… I would start them young with them... just tossing them on the floor whole... they would roll and toss them around the floor and then finally biting into them... a couple of days of that, they were hooked... makes a great treat... but I did make sure they were a bit on the sweet side then the "hot" side

@tanza: I think you are waiting too long. You should have two complete sets of shots before class. Waiting till they are 15/16wks you are missing critical socialization skills. Waiting for "all the shots" is pretty much old school these days. My pups go out even before that to things like lure trials… you just need to be careful and not let them "get" into anything like "old poop" laying around. I'm planning on taking her around the time of the 2nd shots if I can. But the problem is that the next round of puppy classes doesn't start till the last week of March, which would be around 14 weeks anyway. Maybe they will let me join the last half of the previous class but I'd have to check into that.
