Arthritis

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • My elderly Basenji girl, Zoom seems to be having a lot of pain in her legs. It started with her front legs and now her hind legs seem to be bothering her considerably as well. Has anyone used anything with good results? She will be 15 in March. She still loves to play, but will cry with pain in her legs and it breaks my heart.

  • When Chance was limping due to a joint injury in his front paw, we thought he had Arthritis, which has similar symptoms. I had him on
Glucosamine and Turmeric which seemed to relieve the pain. There are a number of products on Amazon you can buy.

  • If both front and back, could be her spin. I'd have the doctor check her. I have had good results using bromelain (it is from pineapples and a natural anti-inflammatory). You can get it off amazon or some health food stores.

To give you an idea of the contrast between Basenjis and Border Collies, my BC once spit out a pill, I said "Blackie" in a disapproving tone, and he picked it up from the floor and swallowed it!

@mryltis Read this comment from @morgansc within this post dated May 30, 2019, 7:49 AM. It answers your question. Ideally it is best to wait until age 24 months but no early than 18 months. https://basenjiforums.com/post/177284

Swimming was my first thought as well. I also recalled a post from WilysMom when Wily was going through therapy to regain leg strength and make Wily use all his legs equally, and she was advised to walk Wily in sand. (Wilys accident and injuries were totally different but it made sense to me. Walk in a medium that keeps the dog a little off balance so all legs are used, and one is not favored.) You could also try using glucosamine treats once a day or so as a preventative.

I am a big believer in quality of life. If a dog is having pain and a medication can relieve that pain, even if it possibly shortens their life, I will probably use it anyway. A longer life, lived in pain, just isn't worth it to me, but that's just MHO.
