Basenji National event in Arizona

Moved Basenji Meetups & Events
  • I am looking at attending the event being held in Tuscon Arizona Nov 2019.
As a soon to be Basenji owner is this an event for observers ? Is there a cost? If I can only attend 2 days what are the "must see" events

  • Open to all, the Nationals is the best place to meet/greet many Basenjis and Basenji breeders.... I would suggest that unless you have a particular interest in a particular sport, you go to the conformation days. And one of the best (IMO) is puppy sweepstakes and Veteran Sweepstakes... then you see very young and very older...

  • That's a fantastic idea. Here is the schedule: https://www.basenjinationalspecialty.com/schedule/

For a spectator I think agility is hands down the most interesting. Unfortunately it's on the weekend so perhaps not the best for meeting breeders (if you care). This also doesn't seem to be Basenji only, so if you want to see Basenjis then probably not the best.

Lure coursing can be fun and there is a lure seminar on Monday. So Monday for that and Tuesday for Puppy and Veteran Sweepstakes?

Find a good positive reinforcement puppy class, like clicker training and you will both have fun. All of mine have earned at least a rally novice obedience title and love the training. There are some things that you should not expect of a basenji such as being outside off lead. They are sighthounds and must be on a lead or in a fenced area at all times. The biggest issue with a house with children is that the children must understand the door can never be left open. My inlaws have a terrible habit of wanting to stand in the doorway and talk as people leave. I have to shoo them outside so the dogs do not try to dart outside given the opportunity. We have had ten basenjis since our son was two, he is now 27 and the basenjis raised him.

We will try to keep the 6th open. Depending on how things go next weekend we might shoot to go done on Sunday.

Good job to all the workers and planners - these things don't go on by magic but lots of hard work. I wish I could've been there but as we all know "life is what happens when we're making other plans." Congrats to all winners - and congrats to all who participated - after all you can't win if you don't play. Thanks for playing!
