Basenji Dandruff

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hi, so my little man Titan has white flakes on his black coat. It's like he's got dry skin/dandruff. I've been to local shop ( petsathome) who advised to get a teatree soap for him got it but didn't make any difference. So went and got an oat based shampoo which has made a slight difference but not stopped his dandruff as he seems to scratch all time. However, this Shampoo has made his coat really smooth...
So questions is... am I barking up the wrong tree with thinking its Dandruff or does anybody know of a solution for this ie, some shampoo or lotion for him.

    Thanks any advise.

  • Use a hound glove and/or a warm moist paper towel. Get those natural oils flowing and picks up the dandruff.

  • @viknkrish - Basenjis shed and have dander...normal... too many baths will only make it worse.

  • Food for Thought: It "could" be something Titan is eating, like a mild allergic reaction, or something that he isn't getting enough of in his diet.

  • Mine get - and all of them always have had over the years - a small amount of lard (bacon dripping) each morning. Sunflower oil is useless, you need the animal protein. OK, you are in UK so you can get to any supermarket and buy lard ! Not too much, just a small amount, but regularly. Maybe half a small teaspoonful or even less. Never had the slightest problem with dry skin or dandruff.

Yes, grooming with a hound glove too, but go to Boots The Chemist and buy a tube of Vitapoint. Male hair preparation. Squeeze about half an inch onto your hands and rub them lightly together. Then massage the Vitapoint well into the dog's coat. They LOVE this attention and you will hear him purring ! Leave for 20 minutes or so and then brush out lightly.

  • I would be careful with tea tree oil based shampoos, essential oils it can trigger seizures in dogs who have history of epilepsy. It happened to one of mine, when we put teatree oil on him as a flea preventitive.

  • My Valentino had terrible dandruff. His vet said it was due to dry skin. She had me add Goat's milk and coconut oil to his diet. His dandruff lessened dramatically after about a month. The amount of coconut oil (solid or liquid) per day should be no more than 1 teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight. Valentino is about 27 lbs. so I give him about 2.5-3 teaspoons a day. I divide the amount in half and add it too his meals. I feed goat milk rarely because it is so high in calories.

@tanza: LOL …. so hmm... great weather = higher Vet costs... makes perfect sense to me!!! LOL great weather equals more want to live there. More want to live there, drives real estate costs up. Increased real estate costs drives other expenses up. LOL, it does make some sense. But then, wth is up with NYC which has icky weather? Oh wait, massive overcrowding, never mind.

Rami did that when we first got him and we thought it was nerves. It continued after a few months, so we changed his food (same brand) from chicken to lamb. He had been eating chicken all his life and somehow had recently developed an allergy to it. He still has flaky skin every now and then, esp this past spring when everything started blooming (he's a sensitive guy ;) ), but for the most part it's much better. I also give him fish oil pills, one with each meal. I would try a better brand of food and maybe stick with chicken, but if that still doesn't help, try beef or lamb instead.

My C3 has the same itchy skin problems too mostly due to the 1001 allergies he has…but I use the Aveeno Oatmeal Ointment to help calm the itch & I also put Brewers Yeast tablets & Fish Oil tablets into his food to help keep his skin & coat healthy. Sometimes we need to bathe regularly (like once a week ) in the Aveeno oatmeal shampoo to help as well. Good luck!

Thank you so much for the encouraging words. We have been running him with our other dogs in our yard, we have about half acre or so, and he is fast..He loves it, just don't think he is used to out heat yet, it is already about 85+ degrees and very humid…I think he looks good, he is definitely babychunky, not fat, but what I envision a puppy looking like before he grows into his own body. We will keep up with what we have done so far and see what he turns out like...can't be bad, just beautiful.. Basenjimamma

An update on Ben's condition. He had his teeth cleaned this morning and the vet had to remove several teeth. A large tooth in the back of the mouth had a cavity that went all the way to the root. He never lost his appetite during the whole ordeal or seemed to have any sensetivity of his mouth. I hope this is the end of the suffering he was going through. He was a rescue dog so we don't have the previous owners records as to dental care he had in the past. You can be sure he will be monitored from here on out for any sign of tooth decay or tarter build up. Thanks to everyone who replyed to my inquiry on Basenji health.
