Question about dog in heat

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Cory is in heat (and hopefully nearing the end of her cycle). This is our first experience with a dog in heat. Our previous females were all spayed. We think she went into heat around Sept 20, so I guess we have a week or two to go. (We aren't positive because she only spotted for one week. She is still swollen.) My strange question is: Can being in heat make their breath smell really bad - like cheap oil packed tuna with metallic undertones? Sometimes I can smell iron and I know that is from her being in heat. But the awful tuna breath - PLEASE tell me it is due to her being in heat.

    Thanks,
    Pat

  • Hmmm…I haven't noticed that. I don't notice the iron smell either that some people comment on. What you are describing *sounds like the anal gland smell...I suppose if she is cleaning herself and has an anal gland issue, you might notice that smell near her mouth (eww..) See if you notice the smell near her bottom ;)

  • @Quercus:

No…oddly enough, her bottom smells much better than her breath! I'm apparently snuggling up to the wrong end.:D

  • Hmmm….I would try brushing her teeth, and hoping it passes after her heat :)

  • Sugar sometimes smells like that when she is in season-it may be from cleaning themselves. As Andrea said, try brushing her teeth. It may help.

hahahahahaha–what we basenji parents do for the sake of our kids :)

  • And you should brush their teeth anyway….. so you will be "killing" two birds with one stone....

We would have as many as 4 in season at one time.. and I do remember the "iron" smell... don't remember bad breath... and they did clean themselves lots...

LMAO…I sometimes feel this way with Nala too!:D :D

  • Ewwwww! I figured it out. It IS her anal gland leaking. She was standing on the sofa next to me and I happened to notice a little white stuff leaking. About then, she noticed it also and reached around and cleaned herself. Then, of course, she breathed on me. I repeat…......EWWWWWW! It was that cheap, oil packed, metallic, gross tuna smell. She generally has two formed poops a day. Sometimes she even treats me to a 3rd one in her crate when I leave her while I can run an errand. Can't say whether that is formed because she stomps on it. I guess I'll try the pumpkin and maybe some other veggies. However, since she is no longer in heat, she doesn't seem to emit the smell as much. Do the anal glands leak more when they are in heat?

  • I don't know about the heat part but Deke scoots from time to time. Like the dog on that carpet cleaning commercial. As soon as I see him do it I express his anal glands for him. I've been able to do it from the outside, I don't want to get the gloves out. When he was younger I'd smell that on my couch from time to time(time to clean the couch). I never do anymore. Maybe it gets better with age?

  • EWWWWWWWW:eek:

    Anal glands-EWWWWWWWWWWWWWW:eek:

As I've said in other posts-when Sugar gets leaky or starts scooting or excessive licking-out come the veggies and pumpkin!:D

@TwinDogsDifferentMothers: Our opinion is, you own your dog, you know if they are struggling under the conditions and exercise load that you work them at. If that is the case then you should take whatever steps are necessary to keep your dog healthy. There is nothing wrong with buying some extra equipment to be on the safe side no matter what anyone else says. Absolutely agree with you. And some dogs will need it more than others.

Who would have thought that worms were so interesting. My farm vet insists that dogs be wormed monthly but mine are on a weekly homeopathic wormer. I'm so pleased that Nahla has got rid of hers. And i accept what others have said about the possibility of a pup womitting up a worming tablet.

Oh, I am sorry about the loss of your b to cars. Sadly, when they get out, the are often not car smart. Hugs.

Thank you for all the information. I am going to a dog show in Springfield, Illinois next weekend to meet some dogs from Meiterhaus (Tad Brooks). This makes me feel alot more comfortable. :D

EL D (who will be 6 this December) sleeps (I think) most of the day while I'm at work. In the evenings when the weather was nice he would run around in the yard until it got too dark but now he generally just sits in his bed or on the couch if I'm involved in something, otherwise he's throwing his toys around or snooping in the basement.
