Kiya and Chance…day 1

Basenji Talk
  • After the night we had last night I for sure thought Chance would continue with his "bad habbits". Today he actually listened to her snarls and gggrrrs and backed off. Kiya was able to enjoy today without Chance bugging her every moment.
Kiya is fitting in great. She is a gem. She loves to cuddle and has even given me 2 baroo's this afternoon. :D
Since Chance has never made a peep he just sat there looking at her as if to say…"what the heck was that" LOL
He watches her every movement and when the cat came down to investigate her, Chance stood next to her as if he was protecting her. Hahaha. The cat is starting to come around. Kiya really isn't interested in the cat much (yet)
They have been sleeping together on the couch today and I thought I would share a quick picture I took a few minutes ago.

  • Cute pic, glad things started to settle down today, I'm sure it'll get better

  • How cute… it does take adjustment... however remember those "nasty" noise don't stop.. that is Basenjis "speak"

  • Awwww cute photo! I'm glad to hear things are going better today! Keep the pictures coming!!! :)

  • I am just happy that now we "finally" have a baroo'n Basenji. I've never gotten to actually hear a Basenji baroo (only on YouTube) I just love it when Kiya gets all excited and a little roo comes out. It brings a tear to your eye cuz its just so darn cute!!!
She is just a sweetie. I have to admit….this past year with everyone trying to get us to get another B, well.....you are all right....2 are far better than just 1!!!!!!!! But this is it.....we just don't have the room for 3 ;)

I'm happy that it is working out great and that you "finally" have a singer. :D :D :) Maybe Kiya will get Chance to use his voice…

One thing I did with Ruby to encourage the use of her voice is a reward everytime she sings. The best one I've been able to train her to do...I have her so I can say "tell me" while I'm holding her dinner...she baroos, runs into her crate, and then she gets dinner.

BTW, I'm noting the date and time of your comment "we just don't have the room for 3"...maybe famous last words :D :D :D.

Hmmm, I can remember many of us saying that…..;)

  • Kudos on your new addition.
You will be surprised how much joy you and your b gets from this new dog.

  • Yay! Great news…I wish I had a baroooo-er too. Pictures? Did I miss them?

  • Congratulations on your addition. More pictures please.

Reviving an old thread to add an interesting tidbit (hey, if the spammers can do it, I can too…!). I'm finally getting around to reading Jill Wylie's Call-of-the-Marsh, which I have checked out from the library. It's about a British woman living in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in the late 1950s/1960s, and she has a Basenji. Attending her first dog show, she writes: Call behaved well considering that for the entire two days of the Show he had none of his precious freedom. He held himself nicely in the ring, and won the Open and Rhodesian Breed but his Challenge Certificate was withheld because he bit the judge. Well, she asked to see his bite and he took her at her word. I watched Basenjis being judged at Crufts Dog Show in England when I was over there, and all five of them bit the judge. Perhaps it's a sign of good breeding. (p. 31) I'm finding a lot of LOL moments in this memoir. Some cute illustrations, too.

I have flown with a dog of mine several years ago from England to USA. He was on as "extra" cargo. I had to pick him up at JFK and go through customes with the usual paperwork and check him in again at the ticket counter of my airline. I have also worked for a major airline and know that the pets are kept in a separate area and no hazardous items such as liquid oxygen are in the same hold as the animals. Most newer aircraft have that separate cargo holg heated as the air is very cold outside at cruising altitudes. I was extemely nervous and frank;ly scared about the flight but he did great. England has a six month quarantine but you allowed to visit your pet. I do agree with Pat…any way it is a tuff one for you...Good luck...

I found this neat brush from Wal-Mart that runs by battery, and it is suppose to do the trick. It was once advertised on TV, suppose to remove the dandar and its a snap to clean. Sahara is shedding alot these days, I didn't have a battery so I couldn't try it out. Will let you know tomorrow.
