A little concerned

Basenji Talk
  • Okay well I got Benny who is 5yrs old as my foster dog and he is a great dog. But we have a 9month old mini doxie and she is very hyper and can annoy big dogs easliy but they never hurt her. Benny will growl at her in the house but not out side he just ignores her. But lately hes been showing signs that tend to worry me. He's showing his teeth at her and any other dog that gets to close as well as growl. Now he mainly does this when hes near us and our puppy wants to come play with us or sit next to us and hes already on the other side of us. I need some help because I want him to get a good home and say with confidence that he can live with other dogs. I was told that he is protective of his people but it onlys around other animals. If any one knows any good tips please let me know so I can work with him right away.

  • It is really normal for an adult dog to be irritated by a younger wound up dog. I wouldn't say that growling and showing his teeth indicates he wouldn't be okay with another dog…but it really doesn't tell you anything about how he would be with another adult. The fact that he only complains, and warns her without attacking...I would find that encouraging, not discouraging.

Jazzy makes some GOSH-AWFUL noises and shows HUGE teeth whenever either Gypsy or Keoki come anywhere near – and I mean, even enter the room -- when she is sitting on a lap or being held. She even does it sometimes when she's on the dog's chair. It sounds awful, like she's about to tear them to shreds. Nothing has EVER happened as a result, and it never turns toward the humans, never.

She sleeps with Gypsy and Keoki, she plays with Gypsy and Keoki, and lives with them just beautifully. It's just her way of making sure they know it's her spot and she is not moving.

Now, we have tried stopping it by dumping her off laps when she does it, but after a few months of that and it having no effec on her, we sort of gave up.
Now we just say, "Hey! Shut up you ol' bat" :p or something along those lines, but nothing really changes.

  • Add my Kristii to Jazzy's group…. she does exactly the same only add if she is sitting on the couch, chair, dog bed....etc... she comes unglued if the others come to close... they mostly ignore her and we do the same.. "Shut up you old B*#$h

just wanted to say that "PATIENCE" is probably the best treatment for a Basenji. Be patient and "Little Man" will acclimatize to his surroundings and you. And not most dogs patience...Basenji patience! (This could mean months)

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

Kona has my husband wrapped around her little paw. He started letting her come lay in bed with us on the weekends because she would go back to sleep which meant we could sleep in. Then one night she never made it to her crate - DH says he just forgot ;) Now she has started sleeping with us about every other night because "she is too cute and peaceful looking to move." The funniest part is when we get up she just looks at us like what the heck are you people doing? come back to bed. and then cuddles underneath her blanket. She is too sweet!

Oh definitely - your pup must have been the model for the bambi! I generally just get the generic "what kind of dog will that be when it grows up"! Minnesota is a hunting state and most people have the big hunting dogs (- or the little mop dogs).

When Blaze use to dig, my dad would yell, scream, throw things to no end. It didn't help. Then mom decided to "improve" the landscape. Everyday Blaze would dig a hole, she would go out there, lay some waterproof fabric, pull some larger rocks around it, and put water in it. Blaze would come out the next day to his new favourite hole, and find the water. He'd pace around for a bit, then find a new spot to dig. He did this five times, then he stopped. He hasn't dug since. He's also stopped the couch digging, but we have no claim to that. He was sneaky. He'd unzip the back of the cushion, dig out the back half of the foam, hide his rope toy or stuffed toy in it, then zip it back up. We had some lumpy cushions

hahaha. Cute photo. I had to put storage boxes under my bed because Tyler and Zoey could actually fit all the way under and would crawl around under there, and I was worried about them getting stuck–especially Tyler since he's bigger/taller than Zoey.
