    thank you for the test suggestion. i'll do that asap. i want to call some vets- but i thought maybe ppl in the area who own basenjis could give a good recommendation.

    I'm not crazy about VCA either, unless needed for an emergency. I can't help you with a vet in your area but you may want to try to PM basenjibratz as they're closer to where you live. I hope it's nothing serious.

    When you buy the strips, make sure you get the strips that test for glucose in the urine, not ketones!! They look similar, so read the pkg.

    thank you all for the advice! i am contacting a vet in sun valley and getting strips on my way home (just in time for a walk!) i'll keep you all posted. thanks again!

    sure thing. she is actually my husbands dog, and we are her 2nd owners (besides the breeder). the family who sold her only had her for 3-4 months, before they decided to move to Utah, so we have had isis since she was 6 months old.

    the breeder is located in Lakeside, ca. I unfortunately don't know the breeders name by heart- but we've contacted her over the years & learned isis's mom died at a young age- but we don't know the cause- which is why i am nervous about Fanconi.

    No matter how today's strip test turns out, you can always submit blood to the U of Mo to have the Linked Marker DNA test run for Fanconi so that you know whether she may develop the disease at some point in her life.

    We had the same problem when Seti was a puppy. It turned out that he had crystals in his bladder due to the food we were giving him (I think it was Wellness brand but not entirely sure). We changed his diet and it went away and has never come back. Hopefully your problem is minor like ours!

    Because by then they should be hormonally mature even if not fully structurally mature. I don't read much research - I follow experience ! Ideally, not at all, but if they MUST be spayed, then let them grow up first.

    There are two sides of the coin here. While we may trust that the vet has the knowledge, we also know our dogs. It is ultimately up to the owner to decide the right course of action. Not everyone gets it right the first time either. Neither the vet nor the owner. I have had a vew encounters with vets who think they know my dog better than me-even with test results staring them in the face. On more that a couple of occassions, I have had to step in and say, "No, this is the route I want to take." But with that decision comes education as well. I think that the consumer, as they grow with knowledge, becomes more adept at reading things on their own and the vets should start to listen and have more open minds to the owner. Just MO. Glad to see, though, that things are on the move for your baby!

    @Benkura: His brother is my other boy 'Cahnce' who is Clear. It's just Chance & Trouper are chalk and cheese and both have good to offer the breed. I did wonder whether neutering him would be beneficial or not. Wasn't sure if it might induce too much stress. However, I would have to stop showing him if I did that and he already has 1 CC. I would not worry about doing it now… only something to consider "IF" he starts showing symptoms.... When Jaadii came down with Fanconi it was before the DNA test was available, so no one knew until he started spilling sugar. He was fine 11 months out of the year, but during Basenji breeding season he was a mess... and that was a lot of stress on him... So being neutered was not stressful, it was NOT being neutered that was. That said, not all dogs are alike... each are different... just putting in what we found with Jaadii....

    Though my dogs have not had a reaction to a vaccine, I tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to vaccines. I would rather give a benadryl to help prvent a reaction then wait and hope for the best. I say this because my cat had a severe vaccine reaction after his rabies shot. Within 20 minutes of the shot he was vomiting, the hair at the vaccination site fell out and the site became swollen. We had to rush him back to the vet to be treated for the reaction.
