Fanconi Test Results

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I finally got Nemo's results back by email.

    PROBABLY CLEAR/NORMAL FOR FANCONI SYNDROME

    Yeah! That's over now.

Based on the email, it looks like they may have renamed the "indeterminate" result with "equivocal". Here is the description of the result from the email:

"An EQUIVOCAL test result indicates that your basenji’s DNA contained features found in both “normal” and “carrier” Basenjis. So far about 10% of the tested basenjis have given us an EQUIVOCAL test result. At present we cannot predict whether these Basenjis are carriers or normal; however, it is unlikely that they will develop Fanconi syndrome. The safest strategy would be to treat them as “carriers” and only breed them to dogs that test CLEAR/NORMAL FOR FANCONI SYNDROME."

  • That is great news for Nemo!!!! Now you have no worries about Fanconi….

  • That is wonderful news!

  • Congratulations! That is very good news.

Congrats on the results.. that is EXCELLENT.

And yes they have been calling Indeterminate Equivocal for quite some time now. I believe indeterminate is the lay speak for equivocal, as that is what Zaire and her mom both test as.

  • Congrats!!!

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

@etzbseder: Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it. After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be: Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear). correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.
