    As some of you know I have aquired my sons dog Lizzy a Lab/border mix. My son moved in as well but somehow I ended up with Liz. She followes me everywhere I go in the house. Its rare when she is not at my feet. She whines at the bathroom door until I come out. I just dont understand her.

    I take her on daily walks but if we run into people or other dogs the walks just arent enjoyable. (i'm pretty sure she wasn't well socialized) I have to keep her close because she growls and barks lunging all the while. Yet one time she got away from me as I opened the front door and raced after a dog with no aggression at all? Once again this dog confuses me. Off leash she seems friendly enough why on leash is she so defensive. Christmas we had a new person in the house and she was totally fine. Went right up and greeted her.

    About a 3 weeks ago we were walking down an alley behind my house headed home when out some bushes shoots this pit bull and attacks Lizzy. There was no warning, it must have saw us and went right in for the attack. It was on a line but that line reached outside their property I grabbed Lizzy and pulled her out of reach. This did not help her problem I'm sure.

    Find a behaviourist to work with her. Obedience training will also help. She is exhibiting leash aggression. The closer and tighter you hold her to you, the worse the problem will become.

    Under socialized dogs react this way because on a leash, they can't run away.
    So, it only gives them one way to react when scared.
    Finding a trainer to work with her, in a controlled setting is a very good way to go.

    Leash aggression is a common issue. When dogs are on leash their "flight" option has been taken away from them so they will often become reactive on leash to try to make the other dog go away.

    I agree that finding a good positive reinforcement trainer would really help.

    At the risk of sounding like a broken record, try the Control Unleashed book. If you can, find a CU class. Pay close attention to the Look at That game.

Just a heads up... many people have serious health issues. We don't drag them out to excuse our behaviors, lies, or even harsh posts. As for rude and hurtful.. I didn't attack you, but you did me. Hopefully while you are "spreading the word" you'll have the integrity to post the posts and let others see the actual posts. :)

    LOVED that Sharron! I sent the link on to my sister and threatened that I am going to teach her Chow some of the tricks - I like the one where the two GS walk beside the guys and sit on cue. Hmmm… I might be able to get my cat Barney to do that. He's the one that already shakes a paw for a treat.

    I so wish this article would make it on the list of news worthy items to talk about on the news circuit through out the country..at least if it is seen by the millions throughout…maybe we can keep a few elderly dogs out of the shelters and off the streets.. Thank you so much for posting AgileBasenji..it touched me lots.. My two elderly dogs passed away in march and then again exactly one month later to the day..in april..very hard for me and my hubby, but also for our kids..these two dogs had been in our lives since we were dating and they were there when we brought Sofia and Lukas home from the hospital...through illness, happiness and age we have loved, laughed and hugged these two boys...we miss them so much..

    Where does your friend live? I do happen to have Portuguese Podengos and the big size HOWEVER I also have the only 2 in the US that are registered. I imported them directly from Portugal. That said - there is a guy in CA that has a few hunting stock not from Portugal but from the Azores - I have asked him for a picture as he also says they are Podengos - but didn't happen. The Podengo has a much narrower muzzle than this dog and does NOT have anything close to wrinkles on their forehead and their ears are up. A bit heavier than the Ibizan but same overall look. I would wonder about a Beezer and ridgeback or lab. And of course if you want to be bored with Podengo pictures go to my website that is under my name and click on the Podengo page.
