Anybody around Tampa FL want to babysit Jibini & Tana? :)

    It's kind of last-minute….I just now realized this section existed. Figured I'd give it a whirl.

    This coming Friday or Saturday I am driving to Florida, to visit family. I'll be gone from here about 2 weeks- but will only be in FL for about 10 days. Have a couple of stops to make on the way down, but should be there by Tuesday, Feb 9th. Plan to leave on the 19th or 20th.

    There's really no room for my dogs at my mom's house...they have no fence, their house is small, and to top it off, they have a young Golden Retreiver who is almost more than they can handle. Mom really wants to at least see her "grandson" Jibini....but they just can't handle another dog, let alone 2 in her house.

    I have been planning to leave my dogs here in SD- Jibini and Chloe (mix) will stay at the hunting dog trainer's kennel where I work. Tana will stay with a friend since she is a climber & she is so easily stressed, will lose weight if you look at her funny.

    However, if there is any way I can bring just Jibini & Tana with me to Florida, I would be a happy girl. (Chloe stays- she's too rowdy for sane people & doesn't play well with other dogs). I would really, really like to be able to bring Jibini & Tana to the dog park in Tampa on Sunday, so they can play with the regular group of Basenjis that meets there. When we lived in Tampa, I would meet up with them frequently. Jibini loved it. They have never met Tana; it's been 2-3 years since I've seen any of them. I'll still go visit if I don't have a dog, but I would love for Tana to experience at least one Basenji Sunday...she loves to play and I think she'd enjoy it :)

    I don't want to kennel them in FL....the prices are too ridiculous compared to what I pay here, plus I wouldn't be able to pick them up on a Sunday to go to the park & drop them off afterwards.

    Basically, if there's anyone in the area who'd be willing to take care of them, do feel free to let me know :). I'd provide their food, crates, and I'd pay you for your trouble :) They are both fairly easy Basenjis; crate easily, tolerate other dogs for the most part, and they aren't destructive.

    If nobody's available, it's quite alright. I just figured there was no harm in trying!! Thanks :D

    We have a friend who keeps dogs in her home, she has kept several basenjis. It isn't free, but not expensive either. If you still have my home e-mail, and are interested, e-mail me and I'll give you her name/e-mail. Or did you ever use Cyndi when you were here?

    @Heinz57: Any basenji owners in the Panama City, FL area? Our boy is 2 1/2 and is an only child. He loves to play. Hello! I live on the beach. I don't have any as of right now but want to get one soon. I am having hard time finding basenji breeder in PC area. How far did you have to travel to get your boy?

    Yes, so far so good. I forgot to mention that the new sliding door plus the new doggy door replacement will cost me AUS$1000.00. Gee I love my basenjis. Is there nothing I won't spend on them??? Getting back to Pepper, I have to agree that she is a smart dog. She worked out how to evade the water spray hazzard to headbang the doggy door and get inside. Who said basenjis weren't smart???

    My cat was here for nearly 15 years before I got my B puppy. The puppy of course wants to play, and the cat hates her with a passion. The cat stands her ground and growls, hisses, spits and goes after Shaye with claws raking - the one thing that perhaps is going to save my B is that she is learning the "leave it" command, and is starting to ignore the cat when I give the command. They will never be friends, but eventually I'm hoping the dog ignores the cat through the "leave it" command. The command is even beginning to save my couch, pillows, chair legs, etc., etc. - keep at it!

    I am so glad I read this. We are having eating problems too but after reading your replies I know this issue is probably stress and hopefully will stop. Our two basenji's (3&4) have always had a pretty structured eating schedule. The boys the 4 yr old and our old elkhound have always ate together since the basenji came to us at 6 mo. The girl eats next. It has worked great for years. Our elkie went to doggy heaven this week, he was 14 and was greatly afflicted with renal and liver failure. The b's don't seem to look for him or miss him till its supper time. Our boy doesn't seem to be able to eat alone without his buddy even though we are with him. I know that a restructure of eating habits is needed and the b's will eat together now and hopefully that should resolve our issues of the moment. And as I have learned owning B's there can be alot of issues of the moment with them

    In my personal opinion, basenjis don't get along with most dogs generally unless they are brought up to do so. They are a small package with a big attitude. My dog liked some dogs, others she would have outright wars with, especially if it had anything to do with her territory. My girl had a peeing competition with the scottie terrier across the way from us, every time we let her out, the first thing on her agenda was race off and to reclassify her boundaries! And when the scottie was let out she did the same.
