My first Basenji!!

  • All of us are just happy basenji folks have found this site.
Its such a support system when it comes to so many basenji "things".
Don't be surprised if you decide you have to get a second b…
    Its is addictive you know!

  • A little bit of an update, Cairo turned 5 months on May 3rd. He is a handful, but we wouldn't trade him for anything. Hes sharp as a tack too, already house broken. Goes to the door when he wants out and real easy to take on walks.

  • Did you get the fanoni test kit yet?

  • I was just going to suggest the same thing, you really do want to have the DNA test for Fanconi done unless his sire and dam have already been tested. You can check and see if they have at www.offa.org. and the DNA test is very easy, you just order it from OFA and it is a cheek swab, get the kit, swab the pup, send it in… done! Again for your own peace of mind, best 65.00 you will ever spend.

It really is too bad that all breeders do not test before breeding so that another Fanconi affected Basenji will never be born.

To learn about Fanconi go to www.basenjihealth.org

  • He is growing so fast! What a handsome boy he is, I love his face.

  • He's very cute! Sounds like you are turning into a real basenji-convert.

  • Thanks a lot, he is a pretty boy. He's gettin' big fast, solid and his head is fiiling out too. Got his little eye liner thing goin' on, haha. I'll look to see if his sire and dam have been tested. I'm gonna check on that kit also, I'll post back and on my findings.

  • Thank you for posting more pictures of Cairo - he looks a mischief!

  • @Patty:

Thank you for posting more pictures of Cairo - he looks a mischief!

Pleasure is all mine, I like to show off my boy as well as seeing everyone else's B's. And yes, he is very mischievous.

  • Cairo is growing well, he's lovely. I know what you mean about the black eyeliner job, Malaika has it too.

I have to go read your link, but having been called to the shelter to see a chow that was an overweigh pomeranian, a rottweiler that was a lovely hound dog (Rottie rescue in FL told me keep quiet, they knew it wasn't a rottie but had a good home so just get it. I expected a LITTLE Rottweiler looking... bahahaha, no.)... vets who thought our basenjis were so many other things, not much surprises me.

If you click on the last icon with the arrow up icon, you can upload photos. They need to be in JPG format I think.

Welcome! I know exactly how you feel, I got my first basenji last year from Kathy and don't know how I lived without him. I too planned on getting another in a few years, I buckled and got a second this year :) Now I don't know how I ever lived without the two of them! You met my dog Dude's littersister Searsha in NJ I believe, her momma and I keep in touch and talk about how the pups are growing up :) Your little Willow was a sweetheart from day one, I got to visit the puppies a few times. Her momma is also the biggest LOVE, she was the first basenji I met and look where I am now :)

@nkjvcjs: We have a can with a push button that makes the top spring up. We took off the spring so that you have to push the button with one hand and lift the lid with the other. That has worked so far. -Nicole That sounds like a good idea :D We too have the pedal-thing and Zuri always open it with her nose  I keep the doors shut… Welcome to the forum! Your preparations sound great!!! ;) And I'm also looking forward to the pics.

Welcome!! I would also add that Basenjis are high energy dogs…umm so good luck having them "calm" down :) But if you exercise them often they will come home to sleep! Which is great down time for you. They will also do these wild sprints around your house/yard/wherver there's space!! We call it the "Basenji 500" because it's JUST as fast as the Daytona 500 or the Indy 500 :)
