BOCA show question
Does anyone happen to know where the BOCA specailty might be held for 2008?
I don't get to attend this year and would love to know where next year so I can start making plans to take off. I know it sounds strange but you have to understand the job I have. -
RE: Decided to keep them
I have retracted the ad, as I was talking to my cousin and they are going to take both of these guys. I did not know they were even looking for a dog. They just happened to come by today for a visit and I was talking about looking for a pet home for these b's. He thinks they are cool and is going to take them both after I spay/neuter them.

How I became a Basenji mom
I have been a dog person my entire life. My parents have always had dogs. My mother has gone through many breeds in my time. About 14 yrs ago she got a basenji, I cannot even remember his name, but I do remember he did not stay long. Didn't really think about them as a breed much after that as I am generally a herding dog person. I have shown for many years off and on and done Obedience/ Confirmation/ Herding some. So smart and loyal was very importnat to me. I am the mother of 4 children and been married for 15 yrs. So as you can imagine I need my time to myself and have a bit of fun.
It became hard to show dogs when my children were young cause I was always busy being mom/wife. And in the early stages of my marriage my husband did not understand why I wanted to spend so much time away at dog shows. So when my pet sheltie got old and became ill, I had to send him acoss the bridge.
Well, about 4 years ago I decided my children were older and I could get back into the dog world and start living for me again. I went out and got myself a German shepherd, not realizing how difficult the GSD show ring was. But I was back and wasn't going to give up. Having knee surgery makes it hard to show this breed, so my daughter shows the dogs for me. Not really what I had in mind when I started this again. But I was having fun again.
Anyway I am rambling, (SORRY) My daughter and I were at a local show with the shepherds and across the room I saw a very regal looking fellow and went over to talk to whom I thought was his mommy. A tri colored Basenji w/ his handler Erin Roberts. I had no idea whom I was talking to and she let me know right away they are not the dog for everyone. Told me a bit about them and then went off to show. I thought well maybe not.
About a year later I had started a new job and as I was making new friends I met a very nice lady that just happened to have two litters of puppies, I asked what kind and she said Basenji's. I was like wow, do you have any that are tri colored. Thinking maybe she had one that I could show. She knew I showed dogs and said she would bring her two best females over to my home and I could choose. Well she showed up w/ two of the cutest puppies I have ever seen. I could not choose so I took both.
Immediatly they stole my heart with the antics and comical behavior. These are my two girls "Chili" and "Pepper" better know as a pair of "chilipeppers". I know really stupid but they both come to it. I have shown both and have points on both of them AKC and UKC. Well I was hooked and my friend knew it. So last year when she had pups again she smoothed me again and two more came to be residence. Pumba red/wht boy and Ivy red/wht girl.
My friend says they are like potato chips you cannot have just one.. I think she is right. I am hooked so I then started searching for a really nice show puppy, but I knew what I wanted more than anything. A male Black/white. I searched until I found a breeder that would part with one and to my suprise I did about three mo ago I became the proud mommy of "Cody" a beautiful boy black/white who is just the charmer I knew he would be. The first show out last month he took his first point over the open dogs and a major reserve, best puppy and a grp2.
As I said before normally a herding breed person I am amazed as to how much I love this breed. So not anything like a herding breed, but they love to have me as the leader of the pack and are so much easier to handle than a shepherd. I can have them all around me and not have the amount of hair and SMELL that I get with the shepherds. I love that. I still have my shepherds and love them dearly but I think I have become a Senji MOM FOREVER…....
That is my story. -
RE: Biking with your Basenji
Biking w/ the our senji's is fun, we try to go out atleast three times a week. It really depends on how hot/cold it is.
I can say we kinda cheat though. I also have German shepherds and they pull a cart that is used to pull my three yr old son so I get to walk to steer it. My daughter rides her electric scooter and the senji's are attached to a contraption my husband made. You would have to see to understand.. It is so she can exercise all four dogs at once at the same pace yet she can control the bike.
When the weather is not good we use our human tread mill to exercise the dogs. I thought it would be hard to teach them but they love it. And the vet says it is great idea.
I can say anytime I take the dogs on a hard surface I lotion up the pads for extra moisture and traction.
I know I seem really strange but I love my dogs but I am not rich so I have to figure out ways to condition them.
I have a friend that uses a "springer" and loves it, she uses it for her Lab. -
RE: Breeds That Bite
Well, I am going to put in my 2 cents here as not only do I have senji's but I also have German shepherds. And I can say after 7 years of being around and showing them I can say it is the socialization they receive as puppies. That is with any breed. I have friends that have pits and they are sweet dogs but if the person(s) who care for these dogs on a daily basis do not understand how to properly socialize a pup then there is bound to be an accident or two.
I socialize my pups starting from day 1 puppies are imprinted w/ the human sent as so they will not have fear, when they are about 3 weeks I start to allow outsiders come in and play and cuddle with them. Then as they grow they are taken out and introduced to new sounds and smells. If I have a pup that seems a little more shy than the others I will spend extra time with them. I believe it really gets down to responsiblity as an owner/breeder to socialize pups early so they grow up to be well adjusted k-9's able to adapt to any situation.
BUT THAT IS JUST MY OPINION.. NOT REALLY WORTH MUCH…. LOL -
RE: Nick names
here may be some you have not heard
pigglett (always to fat looks like pot belly pig)
ms piggy ( hogs all the food if allowed)
mouth of south ( yodles for the fun of it)
Princess ( now this is for the male who hates to get his paws dirty)
Ding-a-ling ( the other male that is not always the most corrdinated)
Chilinator (chili is her name but she is defintley the boss) -
RE: Ew! what IS that smell?!?!?
All my Basenji's get major GAS and oder in the ears if I feed dog food, so I have switched to the Raw diet and by my suprise they are all doing great and NO more oder.. Yeah..
This was recommened by my breeder whom has been showing and breeding Basenji's for about 20 yrs.
It is great and no really any more expensive than a quality dog food. -
RE: Frustrated….
My Cody does the same thing especially after I have been gone at work. I do the same thing back at him and he is like "what is your problem?" It is only ok if he does it. LOL
Last night he went out to potty and the neighbor just got a new dog and he was nutts.. He had relievd himself out side but after the puppy came over to him he was just a nut case. When he came in the house he was running aroung acting like a maniac and then took a nice dump in the middle of my bed. NOT sure what that was about by I let him know I was not pleased witht this behavior and put him in his crate. By the way Cody is only 8 mo.
So I figure sniffing is not so bad.. I think everyone is right and he is just smelling the new farmones you are giving off and it has him interested, just let him know in a gentle but yet firm manner NO NO NO. -
