• So I have posted before about food but I can't for the life of me make a decision…this has been the biggest decision for me and I want flat out opinions.... I am going to do a 75/25 blend because I want the variety.

75% Taste of the Wild Bison with:

    25%

    1: Evo Salmon OR

2: Taste of the Wild Salmon

Is it better to stick with blending two different flavors of the same brand? I would think it would be beneficial to have two separate brands because the ingredients are different vs. too similar....all the choices I picked are high quality but I want to get a variety of ingredients and in some only the protein source is different between flavors of the same brand.... I don't think this ratio will cause stomach upset if I used separate brands but I'll ask the experts...(you guys)

  • if you're worried about variety, you may want to consider rotating high quality dog foods. Otherwise, I fed Evo for YEARS. Shortly after it came out I started feeding Evo, back when there was only one type of Evo. Loved it and dogs did great on it for 6 or 7 years I think. I have since stopped feeding Evo when it was bought out by Proctor and Gamble. I just felt that the formula would change when the company decided to put profits over pets. This may or may not happen, but this is just my hunch. (I have been wrong once or twice, so take it for what you will.) I now feed ToW. I've started with the Prairie formula, but will rotate when things warm up. The Prairie formula had more protein, so I decided to stick with it through the winter. Just my 2 pennies worth.

  • I prefer the idea of one brand only, simply because I believe there is going to be more consistent quality control.

I feed Kipawa 75% Taste of the Wild Prairie (Bison) and 25% Taste of the Wild (Salmon) for a total of 1 cup dry food. In the morning I add one tsp. of olive oil, and in the evening I add 1/4 can of Taste of the Wild canned food. The olive oil does a great job on keeping his skin and coat in good health.

  • Like Agile, I don't feed Evo anymore since P&G bought it. I mix brands so it is easier to do a quick food switch if need be. My winter mix is Orijen and TOTW. In spring/summer fall I also add in Instinct. I mix up the flavours along the way.

  • +2 I wont feed Evo either…P&G is nasty. I decided not to feed TOTW because they refused to disclose an ingredient used as a preservative, which bugged me. I'm an Orijen girl myself and I mix that with raw. I hear Fromm Gold is excellent.

  • I rotate food, reason being is that I want to be able to at any time switch foods without having to worry about tummy upset. So I use a base food all the time of Fromm's Surf and Turf… one small bag mixed with a variety of other high quality mostly grain free dry... I have used Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance Potatoe and xxxx, Evo (although not so much since they were bought out) Blue Buffalo, etc.... I mix with wet, again a variety of quality wet meat based. Also use freeze dried, raw, etc mixed in on different days.

I really believe that changing things up keeps them interested (however that said they have always eaten like little piggies).....

  • Our base is TOW, we used to use EVO, until my whippet girl kept getting diahrea with it. They all do well on TOW fowl versions. I recently bought a bag of the Natures Domain from Costco now that they have fowl, have not used it yet, but have heard great reviews from several friends. We augment with natures variety raw and red barn meat rolls for their evening meals.

So Lisa…my adult dogs are on Natures Domain(from costco)right now, could I transition Pippin onto that food, you'd think?

Not Lisa, but IMO no reason that you could not transition Pippin

Thanks Pat, sure would make it easier…as he dives for their food and they dive for his...

  • My new pup is on Natures Domain now, thats one reason I'm trying it, so she does not have any change in her food.

How much does she get in a day? I am glad to hear of this, as I really like the food and what it has done to my adult pups.

  • I'm not sure as she is still with her breeder he feeds 5 pups together using a mix of natures domain and goats milk. She is 6 weeks now so I image a cup a day which will taper off some by the time she comes to live with us at 10 weeks. I fed Xander a mixture with goats milk till he was 16 weeks.

Well Pippin had his first small serving of Nature's Domain grainfree food today…HAPPY PUPPY...he thought he had scored a big one..no more baby food (well after we transition all the way that is)...hehehe.
Thanks for all the help Lisa V, Pat and Lisa S

  • I feed my kids a jar of human baby food with their supplements ground up in it every morning as they can find a pill tucked in anything and spit it out, but a jar of gerbers baby food with a ground up vitamin is acceptable to all. Its their special treat and they all line up to be given their little jars to lick clean. I first started doing this with Tasha when we took her for her first chemo treatment the vet gave her a jar after as a treat.

  • Ive never heard of this food but it sounds quite popular. I would like to buy a 5lb bag to try. which one should i get?

KiroGurl, if you are talking about the Nature's Domain foods..they are only available at Costco in huge 35lbs bags, here in Houston they are about $26 -$30 depending on what flavor..Salmon is a little more expensive..still cheap though in my opinion. But if you buy one of their bags (or anything else for that matter) and you or your dog end up not liking it..Costco will take it back no questions asked for a full refund.

My pups like both flavors and I oftern mix them together

I was talking about both… I frequent costco .... so ill buy a bag and give it a try. she is sick of her food. THANKS

  • One word of advise… 35lbs is a lot of food to go through when you are feeding one Basenji (or ever two for that matter)..... And it can go bad, so keep that in mind when buying such a large bag. If you have something that will vacuum seal, that would work so that you can store some and use some.

It takes my two over a month or more to go through 8lbs of dry food....
