Odd basenji eye socket

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • We met a 12 year old basenji a couple of days ago while walking. The dog had a huge indent in his eye socket/cheek area that seemed to alter the shape of that eye. Even Kipawa sensed the eye was 'wrong' and licked at it softly.

Do any of you know what that might have been? The dog is a rescue dog (has had 4 homes now). So maybe an injury? I would see that as possible. The owner, however, said that she had heard that basenjis could get this 'problem'. The dent was definitely in the bone structure. It was not like a coloboma (a hole in the eye itself).

I'm going to see if I can find a picture of what I'm describing.

  • Certainly nothing that I ever heard of or a problem that is typical to Basenjis? I would not wonder if maybe the dog was hit by a car and it is the result of an accident? People are usually pretty quick to say "something that XXXXX breed gets"… and usually more times then not, that is not typical to that breed.

  • I spent a fair bit of time last night looking through the online Merck Veterinary Manual. I found lots of various eye illnesses/problems, but nothing like what I saw on that basenji. So what you are saying makes sense to me.

  • This could be muscle wasting usually due to a tumour on the nerve.

  • I remember on the old B-list, someone in the NW had a basenji who got a fungal infection in the sinuses, long and complicated treatment that left some of the bone eroded away. She said the dog had an odd shaped face afterward. Could be something like that?

  • Patty and Anne, could be either?

Anne, this basenji had 4 different homes over the course of its life. Would it be odd if the dog you are thinking of is in fact this dog?

So I will be digging through it again tonight with your comments in mind. If I find a picture I will definitely post it.

  • I think I found it! It is called Masticatory muscle myositis, and I will attempt to try attaching a picture of it.
The picture shows the deep indentation around the eye socket on the outer socket of the eye that I mentioned.

  • Sorry, posted twice.

  • Oh wow, just some sort of muscle degredation? Is that not the main muscle of the jaw?

  • I believe this is quite a rare condition and although the head looks strange the dogs don't seem to be suffering.

My Valentino had terrible dandruff. His vet said it was due to dry skin. She had me add Goat's milk and coconut oil to his diet. His dandruff lessened dramatically after about a month. The amount of coconut oil (solid or liquid) per day should be no more than 1 teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight. Valentino is about 27 lbs. so I give him about 2.5-3 teaspoons a day. I divide the amount in half and add it too his meals. I feed goat milk rarely because it is so high in calories.

@maddyrien Not sure that I understand the question. Hackles can go up, they can get a lovely counter-ridge along the back, if annoyed, angry or just apprehensive. In winter some grow quite a thick mane and a positive winter coat but then they shed (!) and the first place it usually starts to 'go' is on the top of the head, between the ears. Thereafter daily grooming becomes essential - for the sake of the furniture -

Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

Of course required for artificial… reread and don't know where you got I didn't know that. I said: As for proving, if you are not using semen, you don't have to test generally. Pretty clear I know if you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to test. But you ALSO have to test when producing lots of litters. I saw no reason to get into the specifics there. But let me state it clearly so you don't argue more on item that has nothing to do with the issue.. If you use semen (ie not live cover) you have to do DNA. If you do live cover, generally you do NOT have to do DNA unless you 1. use more than one stud 2. the stud produces a certain number of litters (not looking up number) and a few other situations. And Pat, chill, really. I didn't say looks was the ONLY. My point, which I stated repeatedly, is that the African dogs also don't KNOW for sure if pure basenji.

So many of those poses and positions are the same things I see Paco do. I'm also no expert, and Paco's my first dog that's mine-all-mine for me to watch all the time, but I feel like Tag's face is very Basenji-like…and if he yodels as well... if he doesn't have Basenji in him, I'd at least say you could describe him to others as a Basenji-like dog.
